I can’t bear the thought of another full lockdown but it seems inevitable

I’ve only just this week been allowed to see sister without social distancing, as she lives in residential care, had a lovely meal and a big hug but at the end all I could think was, will it be another year before we can meet again? She’s been hugely, horribly affected by this virus - she’s dreadfully ill through anxiety - and has been only just told this week she can see two relatives and one friend, and she might be allowed back to day care services the end of this month - first time since Feb 2020 .

I can’t bear the thought of another year indoors, no haircuts, no socialising, no shopping, no travel, no seeing sister or friends or family ...

I live in a tiny village with shit public transport that was largely stoped over both lockdowns ... can’t bear another year in this three mile square and relying on online delivery and zoom ... GP rang this morning and even yapping to her I thought, how lovely it would be to see someone else face to face - most friends and family are still heavily avoiding all socialising, this is my experience of most people now that there’s a lot of fear and anxiety around covid .

I realise restrictions are necessary and probably inevitable, and things could be so so much worse - but I’m struggling so much now . Finding I’m dreading getting out of bed as I keep thinking, what’s coming next?

@Puppylucky

Excuse my ignorance but what I don't get is the same posters repeatedly reiterating both the increased infection rate and the ongoing lack of herd immunity. Surely the two things can't be simultaneously true?
Different variant, therefore previous immunity is less effective.
StealthPolarBear · 04/06/2021 20:46

Sonnet, no

SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 20:47

There is no way our if this apart from suppressing covid as much as possible and vaccinating everyone. Covid is a formidable virus, capable of evolving very quickly and adapting extremely well to the environment. We need to learn to adapt too. We can't keep making the same ignorant and reckless mistakes.

Puppylucky · 04/06/2021 20:48

Sorry that's not my point Regardless of variant if it's as infectious as claimed then surely herd immunity will also rise?

Puppylucky · 04/06/2021 20:51

I think you get it Stealth Polar Bear Wink

herd immunity by natural infection is not a good strategy and was v quickly abandoned by governments worldwide last year. Excess death, long term complications, increased emergence of new strains that may escape immunity, healthcare systems overwhelmed (leading to non covid deaths) are the main reasons

Yes herd immunity will rise but because of the large number of infections, the virus will evolve again to evade the her immunity and vaccines. That's how viruses work.
SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 20:53

Covid evolves very fast as shown by all the different variants appearing.

SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 20:54

Yes not to mention all the deaths as a rault

Oblomov21 · 04/06/2021 20:54

Nope. I don't see a lockdown coming. And I think its scaremongering and dangerous to suggest it is.
Damaging to peoples mental health. Makes me very angry.

TheVolturi · 04/06/2021 20:54

I'm in Lancashire and it's crazy around here. Our school shut last week because there were so many cases. My own ds has covid currently, caught from school, there are several other cases in his class. We are living every day not knowing if any of the rest of us have caught it off him, and it's scary tbh. Dh is losing money staying off work as well. What if they go back and another one of our dc catch it, we have to go through this all again? Surely it's better to have a short lockdown to help cases slow down?

PaulGallico · 04/06/2021 20:55

What is it with the same three or four posters coming on every thread telling us all we are fucked...?? I don't think its anxiety or a love of lockdown. I suspect it makes the posters feel important and powerful.

BonnieDundee · 04/06/2021 20:57

At the beginning, we kept hearing 70% for herd immunity. Why is it 85 now?

Agree. And it was.once the vulnerable and elderly are vaccinated we can have our freedom back. Now it's all adults and children. Feel like I live in animal farm, thinking "i'm sure that wasn't what they said"

And if Boris is hosting a jolly in Cornwall which people will be flying in all over the world for, he can get the fuck if he thinks I'm going to follow any more rules.

Important and powerful? What are you on about? Do you think that's why scientists are trying to warn people and save lives too? Seriously, you can't help some people.
StealthPolarBear · 04/06/2021 20:57

I find it incredible that in February 2020 the thought we'd ever lockdown or businesses would need to shut for a day was unthinkable.then it was three weeks to protect the NHS.
Now here we are.
Lots of people say if we lockdown again tehy won't comply, presumably they live close to family? Even though it's only 40 mins to an hour's drive to see our parents - nothing in normal times - in lockdown there is an expectation you'll stay local and I'd be very uncomfortable doing that journey.

In the no one seeks my opinion or wants to listen to me in real life so I spout it on line and feel important for it?

Maybe.

leafyygreens · 04/06/2021 20:58

i don't think we're fucked

it's unfortunate but it's a blip. Maybe restrictions and suppression measures will be needed a little longer while we continue chugging out vaccinations but we will get there.

Never mind moving the goalposts, they deny there ever were goalposts. Yes three weeks to save the NHS. Vaccinate the most vulnerable. Well now we're on vaccinate everyone, just hold on a few more months. How many people have died of other causes lonely and missing loved ones since March 2020? Why is covid all that matters?
SonnetForSpring · 04/06/2021 21:00

Bluntness you are hard work. Shooting the messenger is a flawed approach. In a few weeks, you wont be able to argue with the facts, although I'm sure you will still try.

What ARE you on about?

Maybe they are trying to explain why we're not out of the woods yet. infection rates are on the rise again.

I work in a supermarket and the number of people now coming in every day WITHOUT A MASK is terrifying.

Disrespectful to us, who have to serve them regardless. And disrespectful to the customers we have to serve next, and perhaps pass on their unsanitised change or notes to.

Please keep wearing masks. I don't like it either for a 6-hour shift but would much rather that than get COVID.

PixieDust28 · 04/06/2021 21:03

I'm not doing it again.
My anxiety made me bloody ill. I've only recently got better and started to see people after a year.
I know it sounds selfish. I only see my mum and dad and sisters anyway but they can fuck right off if they think I'm being locked away again on the edge. Just no.

PaulGallico · 04/06/2021 21:04

@SonnetForSpring - scaremongering on the internet can hardly be compared to balanced information from scientists.

GreenFingersWouldBeHandy · 04/06/2021 21:04

Why is covid all that matters?

IT ISN"T!!!

@StealthPolarBear It's just still a major risk. The major risk.

I'm going to have to log off. This forum is full of imbeciles.

RedcurrantPuff · 04/06/2021 21:05

What happened to Covid being seasonal and summer stopping it spreading? Was that just made up bollocks as well? Or if not, why did summer make a difference last year, with no vaccines, but not this

winched · 04/06/2021 21:07

It's not sarcastic. So many on MN don't seen to live and the real world and have a scooby what is happening. The third wave has started and the gov are doing nothing. By the time they do something, it will probably require a lock down.

I'm in Scotland so 96% of over 65s vaccinated both doses rising to 99.2% at over 70.

Is that not 'the real world'? Confused

Why would we lockdown the entire country at great financial cost and immeasurable cost to the health and wellbeing of every man woman and child (and unborn child who'll pay for it!!)... for a virus largely affecting an age group that has been almost fully vaccinated?

If they do it, I genuinely believe "the real world" will be one where there is no normal. Because if we cannot live with it now, when vaccination is apparently our only way out, how will we ever live with it? We are never going to eradicate it and it was never our intention to eradicate it.

It seems the definition of "the real world" largely depends on your own health anxiety. I guess you'll be along to call me the selfish one shortly Smile
