Start of third wave - what will this actually mean?

With so many of the population vaccinated what do you think a third wave means? Will we need another lockdown? 😩

@aiwblam

IMO anyway
Ah, ok Smile Well it sounds like a sensible definition. No point in predicting waves if we don't actually have a definition of the word!
aiwblam · 31/05/2021 16:35

Well the previous waves have been cases, deaths and hospitalisations.

I should think future waves should be mainly cases, due to successful vaccinations.

MarshaBradyo · 31/05/2021 16:37

Yes I suppose that’s the big question, are we there yet

A wave becomes more benign but one dose for many. I’m not sure which way we’ll go

BeaMinus · 31/05/2021 16:55

@Reallybadidea

I work in ICU. We're just starting to see quite young people being admitted with covid again for the first time in months. It's quite upsetting, I'm not sure how any of us can bear to go through another surge again. I hope that won't happen, but also quite upsetting to see people say that they don't care Sad
😔

The question I want to ask parents is are you happy for it to go through schools? Would you rather your children had it, didn't have it or don't you mind either way?

My preference would be my children weren't exposed to it. Unfortunately schools are going to be the frontline of cases, so presumably an awaful lot of them are going to get it.

TheKeatingFive · 31/05/2021 17:22

So what do you suggest, shutting the schools again?

newnortherner111 · 31/05/2021 17:22

What may help break any chain of infections is the school summer holidays and the end of university terms.

sherrystrull · 31/05/2021 17:30

Why do people instantly yell 'what do you want then? Shut the schools?' when anyone shares any fears about spread in schools. It's annoying.

I don't want schools shut but any schools staff not vaccinated should be fast tracked. I'm horrified this hasn't been done already.

Fgs it’s a legitimate question. The poster is concerned about her children, she didn’t mention staff.

MarshaBradyo · 31/05/2021 17:49

What is the answer to the school situation though?

Disruption to learning at each positive isn’t sustainable
Some people appear wary of vaccine for dc (might just be heightened on mn)

At some point we’ll have to enable education, when would people be ok with this? When we’re all double vaccinated (or nearly all) or would people prefer dc vaccinated

When the government suppress the virus and cases are rare and isolated - not constant and widespread.

A binary either/or mindset and a lot of illogical and erroneous assumptions.

These are pretty much the options:

The more cases, the higher the R, the more hospitalisations.

I'm happy with it to go through schools and never supported the closures at any point during the pandemic. Have a DS at primary.

How long for?

toocold54 · 31/05/2021 18:08

I think the majority are very good at socially distancing, wearing masks, washing hands etc that I don’t think a third lockdown will be needed. Now the weather is getting warmer people will naturally be outside more so the numbers should settle.

The spikes definitely correlate with the re-opening of schools but I don’t want schools to close again.

Hmm

I'll type this slowly for you in case that helps comprehension:

No, I am not suggesting shutting schools again, I am imterested in how other parents feel about high rates being left unmitigated to infect my/their children.

sherrystrull · 31/05/2021 18:20

@TheKeatingFive

It's not a legitimate question. It's inflammatory. It's a dismissal of what the actual issues are.

All parents and school staff I know don't want to close schools. An open dialogue and a positive discussion with opinions shared is what would be useful.

This won't happen if anyone who suggests concerns about schools is yelled at and accused of wanting schools to shut.

TheKeatingFive · 31/05/2021 18:22

Okay then Hmm

I feel fine.

HTH.

colouringcrayons · 31/05/2021 18:22

I wish the UK government would do what some other governments are - e.g. in Ireland they are now (finally!) funding measures to increase ventilation and therefore reduce transmission.

My preference would be my child doesn't contract it, and I want schools open, so my preference would be investment in mitigation.

I think it is really thick to only see two options - schools shut or let everyone catch it.

PrincessNutNuts · 31/05/2021 18:23

Well NZ has done it for 15 months so far, so let's aim for that.

Ok good luck holding out for zero Covid. It’s not been on the agenda the whole time I doubt it will change.

On the school issue in the actual situation we are in Colouring there could be an offer of vaccine and we take our choice and chances.

colouringcrayons · 31/05/2021 18:27

I feel sorry for kids, they are going to have a grim time if rates are very high in their schools. The ones who contract long covid are going to be very fucked off being collatoral damage. I am not sure it can feel very nice in e.g. Bolton where 1 in 100 secondary school age kids had it last (I think?) week.

This. There has to be significant spending put towards making school safer. More invested in ventilation etc. Some schools don't have windows that open for god sake!
