I desperately need to know. Of course we won't until they tell us, but what are your thoughts?

Very mixed opinions in the media. Lots of advice to delay but Boris saying there's nothing he can see that would make us deviate from the roadmap.
@MarshaBradyo yes I think I saw that. I just don't get it though, they were expecting a rise in cases so surely we are on track.
I only heard a snippet unfortunately but the bit I heard said we need to see hospitalisation figures in next two weeks.

So it wasn’t so much cases, but this, it’s why we’re waiting for the data and a fair few are saying it’s on balance (Ferguson’s words about a week ago)

Mrgrinch · 01/06/2021 20:55

@MarshaBradyo that's promising, means all hope is not lost!

Not yet!

Not here I’m listening intently to radio Grin

When the dc let me anyway

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 01/06/2021 21:14

1,910 hospitals in the United Kingdom

870 patients in hospital with covid at the last report on 27th May

You can see why they want to watch the hospital figures can't you🙃

Watapalava · 01/06/2021 21:19

I’m sure we will move forward as planned

Those in hospital are not seriously ill looking at ventilator capacity (in fact those on ventilators have dropped or stayed same)

If nhs can cope then infections won’t matter

Currently only half hospitals have a single case!

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 01/06/2021 21:21

Oh I like that last fact❤

Mrgrinch · 01/06/2021 21:40

Some reassurance here which is making me feel much better.

I wonder if all the talk of cancelling the easing of restrictions is just to scare people into getting vaccinated? Hopefully so.

I saw Iain Duncan Smith on Channel 4 news saying exactly what he said last September, and rubbishing the modelling from the cream of British science as "back of the fag packet numbers".

Someone should do a study on his inability to recall or recognise that we have been here before. More than once.

Iain Duncan Smith is how I know there'll be another big wave that eventually necessitates another lockdown.

The ideological blinkers in the face of a familiar reality will prevent the correct actions being taken, no matter how many British scientists sound the alarm.

Watapalava · 01/06/2021 22:10

Why would there be a wave when 90+ of those who were hospitalised during the previous two waves are vaccinated

Maybe they haven’t had both doses but one prevents serious illness and death and that’s all gov have ever said matters

God princess it’s like your salivating at the prospect of doom constantly why is that?

It’s honestly not healthy

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 01/06/2021 22:11

This expert has an interesting view of the figures. Goodness only knows at this stage if he is right. Not someone I have followed so can't vouch if he is any good.

*Covid cases look set to jump as R rises above 1

But experts say R looks to have peaked and vaccines will soon be dragging new cases back down again*

This makes a lot of sense actually. Here's hoping

Karl Friston said we would reach Herd Immunity on Monday April 12th so there wouldn't be much of a third wave. And has previously said that there wouldn't be much of a second wave...

He publishes so much that he's got to get one right at some point - but I don't know of one yet.

Maybe this is the one?

steppemum · 02/06/2021 18:38

No. we. haven't.

The difference is that now 75% of adults have had 1 vaccine and that includes all the most vulnerable and nearly 50% have had 2 vaccines.

This is NOT even REMOTELY where we were in January.

And the number of cases is not relevant, it is the number of hospitalisations. Which is very low and not actually rising.

Needanewhat · 02/06/2021 18:52

I thought hospitalisations were rising? It's been reported today they are anyway.

Largely male activities seem to have had a preference over largely female ones, it seems

Yep See last summer when beauty salons wernt allowed to open but men were getting their nose hairs plucked at the barbers

SaucyHorse · 02/06/2021 20:46

It's also summer here in the northern hemisphere. Last summer was basically fine, this summer will definitely be better. Not sure about next autumn but it's quite obvious that there's a seasonal element to diseases like this.

They're very low
OP posts:
nordica · 02/06/2021 21:00

Not sure about it being seasonal - Brazil had their big wave during their summer. India has had theirs during spring and going into summer right now.

TruelyStruttingHotpants · 02/06/2021 21:15

I don't think it is seasonal but people are outside more in good weather. Therefore that should help reduce transmission. Also I think there was a study showing UV rays or something destroyed covid on surfaces. I can't remember properly what it said to be honest.

steppemum · 02/06/2021 23:26

covid is seasonal.
sunlight kills the virus.
It thrives best in damp indoor conditions which are foudn more in winter.

In the same way that flu and colds are much more prevelant in the winter, so is covid

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/06/2021 23:31

Covid is not seasonal, it may become seasonal in the future, but it isn’t there yet.

steppemum · 02/06/2021 23:33

which doesn't mean you can't have a surge in the summer, but more that there will very likely be a surge in the winter

steppemum · 02/06/2021 23:34

@RafaIsTheKingOfClay

Covid is not seasonal, it may become seasonal in the future, but it isn’t there yet.
so, all the scientists last summer who went on and on about how they expected it to get less in the summer and then surge again in autumn and winter were just talked bullshit?

And the fact that that was what happened was also just coincidence?

The virus is killed by sunlight.

FusionChefGeoff · 02/06/2021 23:40

Hospitalisations are rising but much slower than cases and deaths are still falling.

Will 21st June go ahead?
