Will 21st June go ahead?

I desperately need to know. Of course we won't until they tell us, but what are your thoughts?

Very mixed opinions in the media. Lots of advice to delay but Boris saying there's nothing he can see that would make us deviate from the roadmap.

Oddboots that would be a serious concern I do agree - what is the evidence on that?

Kitkat151 · 31/05/2021 21:05

@Lassiefromwhere

Also Texas lifted all restrictions 21st June style in March and their cases have continued to fall...
And?

@UhtredRagnarson

Yes, I think the 21st of June is firmly established in the calendar, it’s happened every year for a very long time and I haven’t heard of any plans to remove it. Wink

Perfect I am so relieved. I was worried losing a day was the latest side effect from Brexit, AZ, Dominic Cummings, EU, Wuhan or Russia (delete as appropriate)

Youhavetoquitwhileyoureahead · 31/05/2021 21:40

Thanks oddboots - from a quick skim it sounds as though there is not a definitive answer, but more research needed. Is this much discussed by people on the radio/tv (I don't really tune in, so relying on second hand reports of interviews!)?

I agree, it's something that will become clearer as time goes on, it could be nothing or it could have huge effects later on, so much is unknown.

I have not seen it discussed in the media but I also don't watch much, I only looked to see if there was any science about it when a husband of a friend had very painful orchitis with Covid and I thought about what Mumps can do.

@Daisydoor12

I hope it’s delayed slightly. Basically life is pretty normal now ok there’s some things you can’t do festivals, weddings over 30 etc but compared to where we were and allowed to do not much to complain about. Why risk taking that final step which could knock everything off course be happy for the freedoms we have at the moment until more data energies on Indian variant.
For those with business etc which cannot yet open it really is not pretty normal.

I do get frustrated with this attitude.
My life is OK therefore we shouldn't open up any more.

I run an event in the summer. It is not large, but it cannot run under current conditions. It will run if 21st June goes ahead. At the moment I am having to do all the preparation with no idea if I will be packing it all away into the attic or going ahead with our event.
It isn't even about money. My event is run by volunteers for kids who need it. It would be such a shame if we cannot run again this year. And kids, who have had a crap year anyway, and who would really benefit from this event, will miss out yet again.

Kids are not badly effected by the virus.
Everyone will be lateral flow tested before they arrive.
Most if not all leaders will be vaccinated.

I just cannot see any reason why we should not go ahead, other than the whim of the government.

Kitkat151 · 01/06/2021 08:16

@steppemum
It’s hardly a ‘whim’ 🙄
The reasons for it not going ahead will be based on scientific evidence ..... it’s a shame your event may ( will ) not go ahead but you have to look at the bigger picture.

newnortherner111 · 01/06/2021 08:21

Uncertainty is not nice and not good for business. One of the things about the various restrictions that have been introduced and then removed over the last 15 months is that there appears no understanding of business at all. Gyms which can socially distance and track and trace and when they have shut and open being an example. Largely male activities seem to have had a preference over largely female ones, it seems.

We won't know until June 14th, but I don't think all restrictions will be lifted. Face coverings remaining and some large events is my guess as to two things that will remain.

Backofbeyond50 · 01/06/2021 08:39

I hope so but do fear it may be delayed. Don't think we will go back to more restrictions but though.

no, that is just not true.

It is based on an interpretation of the science.

I am a scientist.
I understand the data.
I have been fully supportive so far, but there comes a point when the balance between life continuing and lockdown has to be made.

There is no increase in deaths and very little increase in hospital admissions.
The NHS is not in any danger of being overwhelmed.
That, we were told, was always the goal.
So why are the goal posts now being changed?

MGMidget · 01/06/2021 09:22

It all depends on the r number. It is going up in most places. Personally I think if they may delay or keep some restrictions. There are many ‘experts’ calling for 21 June opening up to be delayed so the momentum is heading in that direction at the moment.

Pinuporc · 01/06/2021 10:27

I think it's much harder to look at "the bigger picture" if you work in a sector that has been largely unable to function for months.

A lot of rules dont make sense. Golf and tennis being 2 examples over the winter. You can go on a walk in pairs, you can walk on a footpath through, or around a golf course....but you couldnt play.
Tennis (singles) by its nature means you would be 2m from each other most, if not all the time. And doubles could have potentially worked if the pairs were from the same household. Coaches could have done 1 to 1 coaching.

Ellmau · 01/06/2021 10:44

I think some things will relax but they will keep some restrictions.

iduno · 01/06/2021 13:52

No I can't see it. I just can't imagine concerts, stadiums, night clubs all open as they used to by then. I'd like to hope so as I think we need to start trying to live with this.

Iggly · 01/06/2021 13:58

I thought the uncertainty was because the vaccine (especially AZ), did not protect enough against the new variant. And despite all the fanfare and noise, a lot of people have only had one dose.

Furthermore, no vaccine is 100% effective.

So the balance really is - taking into account how contagious the new variant is, the % population not vaccinated with two doses and the % who may still get it anyway, what are the chances of over whelming the nhs again?

The nhs has a low capacity and only scraped through COVID by having a strict (late!!) lockdown and stopping non essential treatment. I swear people forget that.

steppemum · 01/06/2021 16:56

The vaccine does just fine against the new variant.

The aim is to have offered both vaccines to all vulnerable groups and all over 50s by end of June.
In areas strongly effected they are offereing vaccine buses to get through everyone quicker.

To be honest, I know a few who refuse to be vaccinated. I am running out of sympathy for them, and don't see why people should lose their jobs because you don't want a vaccine.

If everyone who could got their vaccine, then those who can't will be safe.

Youhavetoquitwhileyoureahead · 01/06/2021 19:25

"The nhs has a low capacity"

So (I might have asked this before!) what is the govt doing to increase it - are any of the other political parties suggesting we might consider that as an option?

Mrgrinch · 01/06/2021 20:09

Really mixed messages in the media tonight. Really don't know what to think.

What are they saying?

The maths is pretty unequivocal.

Mrgrinch · 01/06/2021 20:35

@PrincessNutNuts most advisors saying to delay, PM spokesman still saying nothing in the data that would make him deviate.

0 deaths today though and only 1 yesterday.

He said that in December 2nd as well.

We opened up with 100,000 new cases/3000 deaths a week,

Either our Prime Minister can't remember what the numbers looked like in February 2020, or August 2020, or he lacks the intellect to understand that exponential growth 📈 looks harmless when it's in low numbers - but it doesn't stay that way for long.

Or he's being disingenuous.

Mrgrinch · 01/06/2021 20:42

@MarshaBradyo yes I think I saw that. I just don't get it though, they were expecting a rise in cases so surely we are on track.
