Why are people such selfish dicks

Just had a fella come in for his booked on the day over the phone haircut, I explained I'd take his details when he got here for track and trace.
Anyway, chatting away at the end of his haircut he announces that he is just back from cambodia and should be at hone isolating so could I make out his appointent for later in the week when he would be allowed out. I was stunned and asked why on earth he was out then and he said he needed a haircut! I said he was putting me at risk and he claimed he thought haircuts were allowed in isolation.
I now feel sick.
My business can't take being closed again especially when other barbers are open, especially at half term. I'm sure it'll be ok, I'm probably worrying over nothing but I don't need this worry.
I just feel so sick

God you're right, he is being totally selfish. If you've got his details I'd be inclined to report the idiot, chances are he's out shopping and socialising too. This will take ages to get back to normal if people arent being sensible.
Have you had a vaccine yet? Chances are you'll be fine, my immune suppressed mother who has been shielding was hugged and kissed by an unvaccinated antivaxer last week. I was furious too.

Aposterhasnoname · 25/05/2021 11:46

That doesn’t make sense. If he thought haircuts were allowed whilst in isolation why would he ask you to pretend the appointment was after he was allowed out?

strangeshapedpotato · 25/05/2021 11:47

He didn't - he was asking for the hairdresser to report his appointment date incorrectly so he wouldn't be in trouble.
Mintjulia · 25/05/2021 11:49

Anyone that stupid and selfish deserves to be reported to the authorities.

I'd be sorely tempted.....

Chamonixshoopshoop · 25/05/2021 11:49

Absolute idiot!! Raging for you Op.

roguetomato · 25/05/2021 12:04

And that's why this seems like never ending, with people being so self centered.

Hope you are ok, OP.

gimmiesomethingfast · 25/05/2021 12:07

@Aposterhasnoname I think he was just scrambling around to justify himself after he saw my reaction.
Wanker

Report him, stop him potentially spreading!
I am sure you will be fine op, so selfish of him!!!!!

Triffid1 · 25/05/2021 12:17

Outrageous. But sadly, not unusual. I have a family member who has been popping out to shops and all sorts while supposedly self isolating post travelling. So bloody annoying.

strangeshapedpotato · 25/05/2021 12:22

Priti Patel wsa "challenged" on this the other day on the Andrew Marr show (I use challenged in the loosest possible sense of the word because Marr couldn't challenge a recalcitrant duckling).

She was asked if the checks on quarantine were just a phone call.
She responded No, there was a robust set of checks in place. Marr asked if that meant household visits... Priti said "No, we're NOT a police state"... so clearly if there aren't house visits, and they're not using phone calls, these checks are as robust as the emperor's newest clothes.

I know of someone who went to the opticians after getting a postive result! People are shocking!

ifonly4 · 25/05/2021 12:29

Idiot. Did he have the courtesy to wear a mask and keep his distance?!

gimmiesomethingfast · 25/05/2021 12:36

@ifonly4
Thankfully I'm a fan of the rules on this and so do ask my clients to keep their mask on throughout the haircut as do I as well.
Fingers crossed there will be no problem for me but I just do t need this added stress just because the prick wanted his haircut

I had a teacher the other day who was isolating due to cases in the school and also awaiting PCR results for herself wanting to come for her vaccine, was quite irate when advised she'd need to rebook for after the isolation period ended Shock

Also the amount of people who turn up for their vaccine with a cough but say they don't need to get tested because they "know its a chest infection "

The sanctions have been wholly insufficient right from the start.

Serious breaches of the rules like this, should be automatic jail sentences, not fines if caught.

I guarantee that after a few dozen had been locked up, compliance levels would have been nigh on 100%!

RuggerHug · 25/05/2021 15:59

Christ he's stupid. I would have been tempted to drop a blade in his lap(not really. Maybe).

Suranjeep · 25/05/2021 16:16

I agree he shouldnt have been out, but we really need to get out of this mindset that "everyone else has covid and I'm going to catch it from them" if the world is ever going to be able to move on.

And yes, the world needs to move on.

Lockheart · 25/05/2021 16:18

I hope you made his appointment out for the correct date on Track and Trace.

I disagree that people being worried about catching COVID is the reason the "world hasn't moved on". I think it is more to do with the fact that that we do not have reasonable control over the pandemic at this time, which isn't helped by people breaking isolation.

I hope so too! He needed a fucking haircut! Selfish, wholly entitled twat!

Report him! He isn't special! And who knows if he is or is not infected!

I agree he shouldnt have been out, but we really need to get out of this mindset that "everyone else has covid and I'm going to catch it from them" if the world is ever going to be able to move on. THE INDIAN VARIANT!! etc etc etc

We can only 'move on' if/when people who make choices that drastically increase their chances of contracting Covid also choose to take on the repsonsibilities concomittant with their choices.

Northernsoullover · 25/05/2021 16:24

In my area if you don't answer the phone in isolation you get your door knocked. Mind you, you could be anywhere when you answer your phone!

CuriousaboutSamphire · 25/05/2021 16:26

I kind of agree with this. What are the chances of this bloke having it assuming he was asymptomatic and considering the current level in the UK? I am sure somebody will be able to calculate it far better than I can but I am guessing they were miniscule. For him as an individual yes, relatively small. But for everyone returning from an Amber or Red country? How are you going to calculate it?

Each person as a single individual = really small risk
2 hundred people per plane load = ?????

And how do you recognise the high risk individual? Oh! Yes, you can't tell by looking and some are asymptomatic! Test and isolate!

strangeshapedpotato · 25/05/2021 16:27

And if every person in the country took this attitude??

Or do you think you are special and above such petty concerns as rules for the common good?
