Indian variant - why the panic?

Doireallyneedaname · 17/05/2021 08:05

Multiple news stories over the last 24 hours stating that the vaccines are effective against it; as well as lab studies last week showing the same, yet the panic continues. Why?

Correction - cases slightly up

Still nothing to be worried about though

PrincessNutNuts · 19/05/2021 16:19

Sewage analysis indicates that surge vaccination and testing are now needed in Bedford Burnley Hounslow, Kirklees Leicester and North Tyneside as well as Glasgow and Moray according to Sam Coates from Sky News.

hospital admissions do not happen straightaway

we cannot say that there is nothing to be worried about yet

Cornettoninja · 19/05/2021 16:30

@AlecTrevelyan006

Cases and deaths lower than last Wednesday

Still no sign of the Indian variant having much impact

Well they’re not, last Wednesday was 2248 and today is 2412. It’s a small enough increase to count as stable though. No doubt some of the surge testing measures and awareness will have contributed to that stability.
AlecTrevelyan006 · 19/05/2021 16:33

Hospital admissions data lag by a few days but the seven day rolling average continues to fall.

The Indian variant has been in the U.K. for a month and if it is bad we would have expected to have seen some form of spike by now.

At the moment- very little evidence to suggest it’s a major problem

EducatingArti · 19/05/2021 18:40

But we have yet to see what effect the opening up of many things on 17 May will have. We just don't know yet and this will take a week or two to show in the data.

Thank you for this info. We are NT and bubbles are starting to close in local schools. It's helpful to know they're getting a good handle on it.

YoutubeZoom · 19/05/2021 19:57

@WarriorN Which schools if you do not mind me asking?

Leonardsgirl · 19/05/2021 20:01

Anon666 thank you.

Ddot · 19/05/2021 20:02

I never said it was logical, so why are people not having the vaccine. Minuscule alcohol, no animal products. So why

WarriorN · 19/05/2021 20:14

My school would be outing and I honestly can't remember the name of the two that colleagues mentioned last week.

It was a "a class in my daughter's first school" and "bubble in my son's school" conversation and I can't remember where their children go.

Looking at the colour graphs positives have been here and there throughout most ages and a cluster in the 20-24's (Allards?!)

I'm v glad poo is being looked at in the name of virus fighting! Certainly the last cases lateral flow testing picked up at work, the member of staff thought it just was just a cold.

YoutubeZoom · 19/05/2021 20:25

@WarriorN Thank you.

Maybe because they have read the same crap you have online and believe it. Most people are getting vaccinated though.

I think they should close all schools in areas with the Indian variant for a couple of weeks at least. If this is more infectious and one child has it, it will spread to hundreds in no time and is perhaps what is happening.
TheKeatingFive · 20/05/2021 09:26

Yes I’m sure there’ll be widespread support for more school closures 🤦‍♀️

Schools will be closing anyway if this spread though as well as everything else.

What crap is that then?
Minuscule alcohol, fact!
No animal products, fact!
Which bit is untrue

You said that it contains a small amount of alcohol .You didn't actually say "minuscule alcohol" or that it contains less than you would get in bread or a banana. There is a difference.
ajandjjmum · 20/05/2021 09:57

There's alcohol in bread and bananas?!! Every day's a school day here.

What you mean? You can't choose to "take your chances ". If a bubble in your school shuts and your child is told to stay at home there is not much you can do it about it .Bubbles are already closing in a lot of places. It would be better to shut all schools in those areas a week before half term while they are getting on top of this as it will stop more bubbles having to close next half term. What is better? One extra week of being shut or three months as happened last time.
TheKeatingFive · 20/05/2021 10:02

What you mean?

We’d take the possibility of a school closure due to bubble bursting over the certainty of schools closing due to policy. I can never understand why that’s not obvious to people.

One extra week of being shut or three months as happened last time.

No one believes they’d only be shut for a week. Trust was blown a long time ago.

MarshaBradyo · 20/05/2021 10:04

We’ve only been shut due to policy not bubbles closing us.

It’s been said first a year you wait it’ll happen etc

So long that yr11 are nearly done.

No to school closure (can’t believe people are going back to this again)

TheKeatingFive · 20/05/2021 10:05

No to school closure (can’t believe people are going back to this again)

I know, right? Unbelievable

Anyway, the issue was never spread within schools, it was spread within schools leading to community spread among the vulnerable and resulting in serious illness. The vaccines have mitigated that.
