Forgive me if I'm being ignorant, but with quarantine required when arriving in the UK, how tf has the Indian variant got in? 🤔

There's another thread on this (at least) but quarantine wasn't required as India wasn't on the red list. As far as I can tell.

Also, maybe the 14 days is not enough - some parts of India have increased it to 17 days- bit I don't know the science behind it.

It's very lax quarantine - hardly checked and people taking buses/taxis/trains/tube to their quarantine quarters. And tests aren't 100% either. It's useless.

It was only a stay at home quarantine until recently. Even if people fully complied, the people they lived with weren't required to isolate. So much of the spread was initially within households, and then to others beyond that via family members of the people who'd traveled to India. Traveling to India isn't really a thing that whole households do together as a holiday (which isn't allowed anyway currently) - it's more often something that one person does - eg to attend a funeral or care for someone who's ill (including ill with Covid.....)
