Under 50s safety compromised yet again!

I am 41 this year as 1st vaccine next week.
It will take 3 weeks take any effect.
Why the rush to unlock when so many not been vaccinated and lots younger age group seriously ill and dying in India

We told we spaced out vaccines longer to ensure everyone has 1 dose at least which gives some protection yet now we could be holding 1st doses back to speed up 2nd doses for over 50.
Will this means anyone anyone in 30s will be delayed 1st doses.

We have school kids not vaccinated at all.
International travel opening up
No masks in classrooms.

I know they have to have a system of priority.
I think it was Indonesia who decided to vaccinate younger age group 1st.
Is there the danger given info coming from Indian variant hot spots thats its prevalent in under 50s.
That they are the ones catching and spreading it.
I imagine elderly in carehomes fairly partially shielded and older age groups have less points of contacts.
Surely the worry is Indian is much more transmissible and it will be the younget age groups that catch and spread it.
Then there's worry it overtakes the Kent varient b117 and becomes our main version of the virus.
We know in uk localised lockdowns haven't contained it.
Yes it entered via International travel but now its community transmission.
Surely Andy Burham ideas targeting hot spots is better than making over 50s a priority everywhere else possibly putting under 50s at more risk.

If nothing else, there should be more space, time and attention in hospital for all those 40-somethings if the over 50s are double vaccinated. Wink

WingingItSince1973 · 14/05/2021 22:54

Sorry to sound thick here. I'm 48 due my first vaccine next week (did turn up for it 2 weeks ago but the vaccine centre was closed up!) I've also had covid in Feb and it was so mild I hardly knew. Is this new variant stronger than the first strain? I know its meant to be more transmissable but is it more deadly or life threatening if that makes sense?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 14/05/2021 22:58

@WaitingForNormality

It's so disheartening. I'm 32 and desperate for a vaccine. I'm heavily pregnant and due to have my baby in 3 weeks by c section. Due to pregnancy, postpartum and surgery I'm vulnerable and will be for a while. Yet no priority to vaccine and have to wait until 32yr olds are called up .... given today's news that gov will prioritise moving up second doses for 50s it means my first dose is likely now even further away. I've got school aged kid, and teacher husband - both mixing in schools where vast majority of adults are unvaccinated (due to demographic). I just feel totally forgotten about.
But presumably you chose to have a baby during a pandemic knowing all of this?

So far the experts don't believe the strain is more dangerous. The increased risks are because of it potentially being more transmissible - so infecting more people.

Good luck for your jab next week Smile

marymarkscousin · 14/05/2021 23:26

Waxonwaxoff0 that's an unhelpful thing to say. What are people meant to do- put off having babies? until when? they might want to complete their family or just get on with life and who can blame them.

Coldwine75 · 14/05/2021 23:27

Completely agree op

Tealightsandd · 14/05/2021 23:29

@WaitingForNormality
Could you get the jab as Clinically Vulnerable?

ItWasLikeThatWhenIGotHere · 14/05/2021 23:41

The over fifties getting their second dose of Astra Zeneca quicker will make bugger all difference to you getting your first Pfizer @WaitingForNormality. It will however mean that the hospital you give birth in is slightly less likely to be in meltdown, so that’s good.

Tealightsandd · 14/05/2021 23:54

ItWasLikeThat
Your post brings home just how much the 40-49 age group keep being fucked over by the UK government.

Either, they're lower risk full stop so should be included in priority for Pfizer/Moderna, or they're higher risk and should be prioritised for vaccines like groups 1-9.

Other countries did their vaccine priority from 40 or 45.

In the news today. Looks like the government are going to raise the NHS health check age to 50. For years it's been 40 (which makes sense as 40+ is when underlying conditions commonly start to develop).

Government reportedly looking at giving the health check at the same time as the booster Covid shots. They seem to be planning to again exclude the 40-49s...

Not blaming them at all. People can do what they want. But I don't really think it's right to get pregnant knowing full well what the situation is and then moan that you're not getting the vaccine fast enough.
DarceyDashwood · 15/05/2021 07:50

Out of interest I put my details into the booking site for second jab appointment and it offered me next week (which would be 8 weeks). Previously it was early June. I didn’t book it but it looks like currently second jab appointments at 8 weeks might be being offered wider than over-50s and CV online (I am not in group 6).

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/05/2021 08:04

I’m 46 and had my first AZ vaccine on 18th April. It was booked through my GP so I’m waiting to be called for the second one in July. However I looked on the NHS booking site last night and I’m able to book for June 14th whereas before the earliest was 3rd July. I didn’t do it as I want to go back to the same centre but I’m thinking maybe I should!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/05/2021 08:05

@DarceyDashwood sorry, I didn’t see your post!

DarceyDashwood · 15/05/2021 08:07
@DarceyDashwood sorry, I didn’t see your post!
No worries! I’m also wondering if I should or not! I understood things to be that you get the best protection by waiting 11 weeks but now am wondering if it would be best to just get fully vaccinated ASAP!

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/05/2021 08:15

I’ve just had the same conversation with my husband! I might book it to get it out of the way. If I’m contacted by my GP in the meantime I’ll cancel and go to the same centre as before but at least it’s booked in

NeverForgetYourDreams · 15/05/2021 08:30

@blueangel19

They will make it within the 8 weeks is things get a lot worse.
It's 8 weeks since I had my vaccine and same with fellow 50 somethings. So it was just talk yesterday about bringing it down to 8 weeks because some of us have already hit 8 weeks and no text yet..!
WaitingForNormality · 15/05/2021 08:32
@WaitingForNormality

No - pregnant women are not included in group 6 as vulnerable (lots of campaigns in flight to have this rectified though).

@Waxonwaxoff0 - your response completely misses the point here. Given how long Covid could potentially carry on for, did you expect everyone to put family plans on hold indefinitely? Perhaps the government should have imposed and enforced contraception to all child bearing age women as part of coronavirus legislation? I'm entitled to be both extremely happy to be pregnant and also annoyed that the government haven't prioritised pregnant women in the same way that they have for the many many other vulnerabilities in group 6.

123banana · 15/05/2021 08:35

I was surprised to be called for my first vaccine yesterday as I’m 36 and in London, which is supposedly lagging behind in the vaccine rollout. Went along and was given the Pfizer!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/05/2021 08:47

@WaitingForNormality I don't expect everyone to put plans on hold forever, but equally I don't think people should be given special treatment for personal choices they decided to make. The same as I, as an overweight person, don't expect to be given special treatment regarding vaccination, because this is my personal responsibility.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/05/2021 08:48

@WaitingForNormality other vulnerabilities in group 6 are health issues that people had no choice over, pregnancy is a choice.

whenwillthemadnessend · 15/05/2021 08:49

My husband works for large corp and has meetings with many colleagues in India. A 20 year old man recently past away due to covid.

The situation out there is absolutely dire and we do need to get a lid on it super quick.

Personally I'd by keeping a masks in schools as the main spread so far seems to be secondary schools ( age of parents probably in 40s.) I would be surprised if schools
Dont end up Shutting early for summer again!!!

HalzTangz · 15/05/2021 09:02

@Freddiefox

I think and always have that people who are unable to work from home should be prioritised for the vaccine.
I agree, I think they should have vaccinated all those that can't work from home first along side those in care homes. Then worked there way through the rest
PinkSparklyPussyCat · 15/05/2021 09:10

@DarceyDashwood I've just booked for 16th June so 8 weeks and 1 day since my first vaccine.

XxxxxsoxxxxX · 15/05/2021 10:10

I'm 42 I work with critically vulnerable people and should have been in the 2nd group of people vaccinated. I do essential face to face work. All my colleague's (some who are younger) have been vaccinated and they missed me. I should have had it months ago. This was despite lots of efforts from me and my boss. I phoned yesterday the NHS line and have an appointment now for 24th May. I'm gutted and worried that there are lots more people like me who have been missed and are doing essential work with vulnerable people without getting the Jag when they should have. It's because I work for the third sector and the local authority didn't manage it well enough in the first place......they vaccinated local authority staff who didn't need it and didn't oversee this enough and there were not enough jags for the third sector.

Thisismyname77463 · 15/05/2021 10:17

I agree we should be stepping back and stopping the easing of restrictions before it gets out of control, again.

However, you don’t need to go out. So if you are worried stay back don’t go to bars restaurants crowded places etc. You can protect yourself to some degree by not going to these places.
