As of Friday 30th April

34.3m first jabs
14.9m second jabs

have been given in the UK. This means that 65% of all adults have some level of protection and 28% are fully vaccinated.

Additionally evidence is currently suggesting that the vaccines are effective against the Brazilian and Indian variants 🥳

The cutting hospitalisation and death bit should be a similar result across all variant infections

How effective at stopping infection or transmission may dip a bit with different vaccines. However not so much they won't be effective.

Basically the virus has mutated in several different ways but all fairly similar to each other or something. This means the vaccines can work on them all.

So unless the virus finds a new way to mutate. Which some scientists think is extremely unlikely. We are all good. They started to say so good that we may not need boosters at all. However the elderly and vulnerable may still get them. Just to add a bit of extra clout.
@Dementedswan That sounds awful, I had a headache for weeks after the first. I hope you're OK with the 2nd
I'll mention it to the doc when I go on Wednesday, they ask what side effects you had with your first. They've brought docs out of retirement and current doc doing it with the nurses. So I'll either have my childhood doc or usual doc vaccinating me. Just hope they don't say I can't have it after I've plucked up the courage ConfusedGrin

Dementedswan · 10/05/2021 18:25

I do hope those vaccinated as part of group 6 receive a booster on a personal level. Would help settle my anxiety around this whole covid/vaccine/clots thing.

lunar1 · 10/05/2021 18:35

My parents are in Wales and are getting their second vaccines after just 7.5 weeks. They will be in the numbers Wednesday.

Dementedswan · 10/05/2021 18:38

Seems Wednesdays are popular Grin

Fantastic news about the zero deaths. And more opening up from Monday too. I really feel like the nightmare is almost over!

Dementedswan · 10/05/2021 19:23

Zero deaths in the figures today? How many née cases?

I'm looking forward to a normal life again, but at the same time I've cherished this time with my family. Dh and I have never been so close, he's my rock and I his. I loved homeschooling my dc. I equally love seeing them with their friends. I'll will miss dh and our time alone in our lunch break BlushGrin

I was surprised to read that in at least some places in Canada and US, vaccine booking is now open to everyone aged 12 and over. I knew teenagers were going to be getting it there, but I hadn't realised that there were no more categories based on age - it was just everyone, any time now! I wonder if that's because of greater vaccine hesitancy, so that they just find it easier to book anyone who wants one, or perhaps greater supplies (they have purchased a lot of vaccine, but it was taken a while for it to actually arrive) or greater numbers of places doing vaccines (I realise it is different for different provinces/states). I was surprised to hear friends in Canada already booking their teenagers in for next week, as I assumed that they'd be slowly going down the age groups like we were here (and like they were there to start with - they got off to quite a slow start, and it was definitely according to categories to begin with).

TruelyWonder · 10/05/2021 23:30

New PHE data shows:

•Two doses of Pfizer’s vaccine reduces risk of COVID-19 related death by 97% (one dose reduces risk by 80%)

•One dose of Astrazeneca’s vaccine ALSO reduces risk of COVID-19 related death by 80% (data on two doses is not available yet)

TruelyWonder · 10/05/2021 23:43

BioNTech has said its COVID-19 vaccine, developed in collaboration with Pfizer, does NOT require modifications to protect against key variants of the virus currently in circulation. They also expressed confidence it works against variant B.1.617!

So not the preliminary evidence results we have with AZ about the India variant but Pfizer do sounds pretty certain. Which is a relief.

Also Grin

Apparenty Influenza (with a higher mutation rate and more "space" to change) takes 5-7 years to fully evade immunity.

This means that despite all the fuss about variants, it's unlikely a full evasion will happen anytime soon. This applies to all the vaccines tooGrin

All this is fantastic news but it only applies if you get both those jabs in your arm 💉💉

@FlattestWhite In the US at least, they've got an oversupply - there's too much vaccine hesitancy. Might as well give it to willing teenagers then, as it adds to herd immunity. (I don't know much about Canada, but my friend in Toronto keeps ranting about what a mess they're in.)

FlattestWhite · 11/05/2021 08:42

Yes it could be hesitancy too in Canada, I'm not sure. They are certainly having a second (third?) wave in places now that the UK variant is hitting, and some places are going back into lockdown. They certainly over-ordered supply in the same way the UK did, not knowing which ones would work, but they were quite late with their orders and got caught up in all the politics of it as well, so didn't get underway until much later - I know over 80s who didn't get it until mid March. But since then, things seem to have changed. Although the rate is still something like 42 doses per 100, unlike the UK/US who are about 76 per 100, there seems to be a free for all now in terms of who can get it. I hope that means they start getting lower case numbers soon as a result, if they can persuade enough people to get it. I hadn't expected there to be so much hesitancy there - certainly amongst the people I know, they're all desperate for it (but I tend to know people who are likely to be scientific and live in cities where it will be popular and easily available)

For all the Wednesday second jabbers, I had my second one on Sunday, AZ. I did feel very tired Sunday evening (had it early Sunday morning) and had a bad nights sleep and felt achey and very tired until about 7pm yesterday when I suddenly felt absolutely fine. Right as rain now. Also DP had his at the same time, no side effects at all.

🥳

Men do seem to have less side effects. Wonder if that is actually true and if a scientific reason for it?

Happy Jab Day to all my fellow Wednesday folk! I have just received AZ and am sat in the car park for my mandatory 15 mins. The nurse that did mine said “don’t lock the doors and if you feel ropey honk your horn and we’ll save you!”

I am also the proud owner of a sticker Grin

Allmyarseandpeggymartin · 12/05/2021 12:01

@CaveMum ooh I’m jealous - I didn’t get a sticker!

@TruelyWonder I read on Mumsnet (so it must be true!) that women generally have stronger immune systems (linked to is having the babies I think) so it makes sense that they would mount a strong immune response and as a result feel shite.

My friend is having hers today - she is 37 so we are really rattling down the age groups now.

InMySpareTime · 12/05/2021 12:05

DH had his jab yesterday and was fine until the evening, but is feeling a bit meh last night into today. At least his fever has made him warm to sit next to for a change.
Our WiFi is no better though, and Bill Gates hasn't given any instructions...
