As of Friday 30th April

34.3m first jabs
14.9m second jabs

have been given in the UK. This means that 65% of all adults have some level of protection and 28% are fully vaccinated.

Additionally evidence is currently suggesting that the vaccines are effective against the Brazilian and Indian variants 🥳

@AskingQuestionsAllTheTime

I have just got back from adding one to the total of second-vaccination people. AZ; no symptoms last time, none so far this and I can't actually locate the injection site, if I hadn't felt it at the time I'd think she must have faked it.
😂

My husband's second AZ jab was like that. If he hadn't got another sticker I would have been suspicious. He has a needle phobia. So could have skipped it.

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 16:17

@GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat

I'm done 🥳 I'm so happy I could actually cry! AZ for me at Heathrow today.
🥳

Do they let you sit on a plane to have it?Grin

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 06/05/2021 16:19

‘Do they let you sit on a plane to have it?’

And ferry you across the tarmac to get it on a bendy bus?

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 16:26

Love a 500k plus day🥳🥳🥳🥳

Yes the new covid update page is great❤
I am trying to decide if I like blocky in green though. Not sure yet. Suppose green is a healthy calming colour. I shall be putting my psychologist skills to good use analysing if this was the right choice for most the afternoon I think 🤓

GeorgieTheGorgeousGoat · 06/05/2021 16:28

Haha I wish! DH did joke that at least I could say I've been to the airport this year. It's the closest we'll get!

mateysmum · 06/05/2021 16:42

Ooh, yes loving that new covid page layout. I used to have to scroll and flip pages, now it's all there up front.Well done gov.uk

CaveMum · 06/05/2021 19:16

Glad to see Hugo is back in the groove - still no sign of our we chat though Wink

TruelyWonder · 06/05/2021 20:11

First time I have visited Hugo today. People have posted these on his comments Grin

Interesting article comparing the vaccination roll out in American to the UK. Talking about hesitancy in America and why there is less in the UK.

www.vox.com/future-perfect/22409938/covid-19-vaccine-hesitancy-moderna-pfizer-johnson-astrazeneca-uk

One thing it says is only 6% of UK citizens are likely to not have the jab. Goodness knows if that is right but is it the number people are calculating here. I was thinking 15%ish.

buttery81 · 06/05/2021 22:36

One thing it says is only 6% of UK citizens are likely to not have the jab.

If that is the case then approximately 49.5 million people will have the jab. Which means we’ve only got another 14.5 million first doses to do!

TruelyWonder · 07/05/2021 00:03

This is a rather good video explaining why efficiency percentages of vaccines in trials don't actually relate to how they preform in the real world.

Something we are seeing now. Which is why all the vaccines are doing so very well Smile

TruelyWonder · 07/05/2021 00:05

How long will it take us to give 14.5 million people their first dose then?

BlackeyedSusan · 07/05/2021 00:07

Group 6 second Pfizer jab invitation for next week, 11 week gap. WMids.

Also we stress tested the AZ vaccine recently. 2doses, caught Covid, did not pass on to the KS3 kids who had been in close contact, indoors, for a weekend.

Two PCR tests each as they got suspicious symptoms and school has asked to test for the child symptoms. Anacdata, but still good news.

It is looking hopeful with a large percentage done now.

TruelyWonder · 07/05/2021 00:35

Hopefully that means the blocking transmission data is very true then ❤

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/05/2021 11:41

Another bit of anecdata is the reported improvements in people with long covid if they are given a vaccine. That is now being tested in ?Connecticut?, but the woman involved in getting together the people for the sample says it's getting more and more difficult because more and more people have already had the vaccine. Hah! Likewise Good!

(Source, World Service radio as I was waking up.)

TruelyWonder · 07/05/2021 12:19

That is a brilliant problem to hear about. Though not much use to long covid sufferers or science.

Will be an interesting study. Fascinating the idea that the vaccine can somehow reset your immune system.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 07/05/2021 12:49

The theory seems to be that long covid may be caused by traces of the virus lingering somewhere in your body where they are hard to detect, and the vaccine kicks the immune system into action again (as having the disease itself does) with the trace-covid getting purged as well this time. This won't be being tested by giving some the potential cure and others a placebo, but by observing results in subjects who fit the criteria required, so they can't just go and get them from another part of the world: they need to be local enough to be observed on a regular basis.

It seems to maker a certain amount of sense as an idea; worth testing, anyway. And if it does work reliably, that opens up all sorts of possibilities for curing other post-viral conditions, which is an amazing thought. M.E. researchers are probably pricking up their ears, or putting them to the ground, or whatever medical researchers do when they are interested in someone else's findings.

TruelyWonder · 07/05/2021 13:12

That is amazing. I have only read the different theories about why the vaccine may help long covid sufferers. All back when they first realised something interesting was happening.

Fascinating stuff isn't it. Can't wait to read the results one day.

Mumoftwoinprimary · 07/05/2021 16:23

35 million first doses!

CaveMum · 07/05/2021 16:43

Great numbers!

Interesting data from Our Man at The FT on the Indian variant: twitter.com/jburnmurdoch/status/1390666071724765185?s=21

If we could concentrate solely on first jabs, it could be done in a month. But we can’t, so.... not sure :-). As a punt, end of July.
PuzzledObserver · 07/05/2021 16:46

That was supposed to quoting the question about how long it would take to give 14.5m first doses. Quote fail, sorry.
