As of Friday 30th April

34.3m first jabs
14.9m second jabs

have been given in the UK. This means that 65% of all adults have some level of protection and 28% are fully vaccinated.

Additionally evidence is currently suggesting that the vaccines are effective against the Brazilian and Indian variants 🥳

GypsyWanderer · 14/05/2021 10:00

I have my vaccine in an hour. Who else is having theirs today? How do you feel?

Dementedswan · 14/05/2021 13:12

@GypsyWanderer how did it go?

It went good thank you. Me and my husband had ours done together and we both feel fine at the moment. Although I have a headache coming on but I get headaches anyway.

Pretty efficient system too.

TruelyWonder · 14/05/2021 13:23

Welcome done Gypsy and Gypsy's husband. You are now making lots of protective antibodies 🥳🥳

8 in 10 people over 40 have now had at least one dose of vaccine ❤

CaveMum · 14/05/2021 14:02

Well done Gypsy and Gypsy’s DH - drink lots of water and, if you can, take paracetamol every 4 hours for the next day or so.

I had an odd experience this morning, a text arrived from NHS saying “You have cancelled your second vaccination appointment. You will need to rebook” - reader I had not cancelled it! It was genuine as it had my booking ref in it.

Anyway I went back online and lo it told me I needed to rebook, so I have done - for the exact same venue, on the exact same date and for a time only 15 mins after my original appointment, so lord knows what was going on there!

amazingnumbers

The number of people who've had at least one dose of a Covid-19 vaccine in 🇬🇧 as of yesterday is

36,115,955

(up 209,284 on the day before, 7-day average 149,473)
That is 54.1% of the total population

The number of people who've had both doses of a Covid-19 vaccine in 🇬🇧 as of yesterday is

19,319,010

(up 428,041 on the day before, 7-day average 364,899)
That is 28.9% of the total population

we should hit 20m 2nd doses by Monday

mateysmum · 14/05/2021 15:13

2 consecutive days over 600k are pretty rare and looks like the % of 1st jabs is picking up slightly too.

Brilliant numbers 🥳

Shellingbynight · 14/05/2021 16:26

I'm in yesterday's figures for my second dose (AZ). I had an appointment booked in a fortnight, but my GP offered me a short notice appointment so I had it done at 10 weeks. They are doing first and second doses, but vaccinator told me they do more AZ days than Pfizer days as they still have supply issues with Pfizer.

No sticker this time (but no side effects either!)

Prioritising second doses won't cause delays for young people - Whitty

Asked by Hugo Gye from the i newspaper about the impact of prioritising second doses in England, Prof Whitty says the move will not lead to a delay in younger people getting their first jabs.

He says that is because the JCVI's recommendation is that most people under the age of 40 will be vaccinated with the Pfizer or Moderna vaccines, "whereas the revaccination programme is largely at this point" with AstraZeneca vaccines.

"This should not lead to significant delays, we don't have that trade off," he says.

He adds that there is still a desire to "maintain a slightly longer gap" of eight weeks between doses because there are "some advantages

Good old Hugo. He didn't let us down with the most important question Grin

DdraigGoch · 14/05/2021 18:49

Wales now has 90 doses per 100 people.

Dementedswan · 14/05/2021 18:51

I think they have done the right thing to get those 2nd jabs into groups 1 - 9 quicker. 8 weeks is still withing that 8 - 12 week window. The sooner those are fully vaccinated the better the chances are of reducing hospitalisation and death.

I can see from other threads that the 40's are not happy. However I do think that once group 1 to 9 2nd doses are complete they may bring forward their second doses.

I actually thought most places had brought second doses to 8 weeks already. Around here my husband and others all had theirs at 8 weeks.

It definitely is the right move to keep lockdown easing on track. We can't be sure if only one dose is enough for vulnerable people. Though the data so far is very encouraging.

If Whitty thinks it won't affect the first doses to much that is good enough for me.

Dementedswan · 14/05/2021 19:11

@TruelyWonder our area seems to be doing them at 9 weeks already.

My gp are releasing loads of slots each week for 1st doses to eligible groups which are getting snapped up. There were 5 vaccinators doing az and three for Pfizer when I went this week.

My dsis and bil had theirs this morning , different area, seems they have switched to Pfizer for all first doses as even though they are over 40 they received Pfizer.

nordica · 14/05/2021 19:18

I think the change to give the under 40s Pfizer/Moderna was always going to make it possible to speed up second AZ doses for groups 1-9 needing them soon, wasn't it? There would be no point keeping vaccines in fridges if they can be given to people waiting.

And it's easy to set up AZ centres almost anywhere (hence the vaccination buses etc. they've been doing).

Dementedswan · 14/05/2021 19:21

I'm amazed at the speed and efficiency of the vaccine rollout. Well done to everyone involved 👏
