Its the pictures coming out of india, with the recent festival and hundreds of people crammed together, during a second covid wave. This virus will just mutate forever, its too global to contain. Its just never going away. What the hells going to happen to us or our kids futures?
I can't see a way out of this. Science can't catch up, its too far spread to ever get a handle on it.

Follow Mac n Chise on Twitter. She's a virologist. I find her a great antidote to the sensationalist media reporting we usually seem to have.

The British media report foreign covid stuff in a gleefully hypocritical way with tales of huge numbers of cases and deaths omitting to point out that India has more than 10 times the population of Britain. And the daily numbers reporting is given with no context.

I don't imagine people in India behaved any differently during the Spanish 'flu pandemic, and yet life returned to normal.

@katfold

The pandemic will end, but I think peoppe are beginning to cotton on now to the fact that the pre covid world is gone.. we live in a covid world now, and social distancing, masks etc are here to stay.

At the moment this is hard to accept but I think over time we will all come to embrace this new, healthier way of life! Staying apart, sticking to your household, staying at home.. will all become second nature. And that is great! Instead of holidays and restaurants we will enjoy jigsaws and cooking at home. Instead of socialising, we will focus on our own household! Single people will learn to be happier on their own, and take a long time to get to know someone to have children with...which is great! Instead of chatting to each other, we will keep our distance and all mind our own business.

In time we will learn to love the new healthier happier quieter way of life!

But there is a way out

Everyone I hear the government going on about promises or foreign holidays this year, or people moaning they may not have one, I think, who cares if you can't.

If we had of stopped the travel in the February 2020 half term, we could've contained it a lot more.

Keep the border shut
Essential travel only with Australia style hotel quarantine wherever you come in from.

No one "needs" a foreign holiday. There's a big difference between wanting and needing.
If it's variant strains putting our vaccines in jeopardy then we have to put a ring of steel around the perimeter and stop people getting in or out. They aren't properly overseeing the quarantine.

Northernsoulgirl45 · 21/04/2021 06:34

This will pass OP. We have a vaccine which can be tweaked as necessary. Cases are low right now. We have surge testing for situations where new variants are identified to try and control it.
We are coming out of Lockdown without massive case rises as far as I can tell. Deaths are thankfully very down too.

OverTheRainbow88 · 21/04/2021 06:36

We are way ahead with vaccines, almost achieved herd immunity, we will be fine.

I just pray other countries can get their vaccine programmes moving faster as it’s so sad seeing the less rich countries struggling.

We should be sending them our vaccines rather than vaccinating the young and healthy.

Not everyone going abroad is wanting a holiday. My family live abroad and I’ve not seen them for 15 months. It’s really hard, but with a 2&4 year old we don’t want to go and then have to pay thousands to stay in a hotel room for 2 weeks so we’ve chosen not to go.

The UK government believes helicopter quantitative easing of printing money and national debt on an unprecedented level for furlough of uneconomically viable pre pandemic jobs is preferable to a natural business evolution of new economic sectors and jobs.

I dont really understand this criticism of furlough. You think people would happily stay at home when their work was forced to close and reduce the spread without income? You think the natural evolution of new sectors & jobs can happen against the backdrop of a pandemic & fast enough to cater for all the job losses?

You poor thing
Please tell me you don’t have children

I’m hugging friends (when we meet for coffee and walks) with no mask on and that human touch.... beautiful.
My children are having play dates

Not a chance am I not having physical human contact.

Staying at home?! I have a weekend away booked with three girlfriends this weekend!

Um there is 1.4 billion people in India. This in reality is a small pocketed increase in comparison to the whole population, ans the variant isn’t seen as as dangerous as the Kent variant,

Yes it’s sad, and yes in those areas they are struggling to cope, but people need to put it into context.

Those of you wanting to stay home and stay safe forever, how are you going to reconcile the fact that essential jobs still have to be done? And that those who need to earn will have no choice but to put themselves at risk to service your delivery demands. Those poorer, younger than you who have to eat. They can't stay home with jigsaws. Take a hard look at what you are asking others to do to keep you safe.

Report
LovingBob · 21/04/2021 07:26

Jigsaws and stuff like that was what I envisaged doing when I was 80 if I make it that far, I have just retired and wasn't looking forward to doing jigsaws just yet, I was instead hoping for holidays in far off places. It will be a long while before we have a life without test and trace, having to book every day out, follow fucking arrows on a path and threats of vaccine passports so no it is nowhere near normal.

I agree re travel. Those that decided it was needed could quarantine in strict measures like their system.

We could have supported the airlines and associated staff instead rather than furlough huge numbers to stay home.

I think @katfold is sniffing glue.........or gloriously sarcastic.

Life will return to normal, if it doesnt. Well, we cant have lockdowns, social distancing and masks forever so I guess people will have to get on with life aware that living has risks, just as has always been the case.

Let's not forget that for the overwhelming majority covid is nothing worse than a bad cold with a couple of weeks off work.

Context is really important and I absolutely wish this was a small pocket. But cases per 100,000 in India are up to 5000. I only ever remember the very highest rate ever in the UK to be 800-1000.
Report
Quartz2208 · 21/04/2021 07:39

I hadnt realised quite how many people there were in India (thought around a billion) but yes I think it is as well important to note the proportion as well to cases. And the fact that they have 0.5 bed hospital beds available per 1000 people.

Having thought though I do think some things will take time to get back - I have gotten used to not hugging people goodbye or shaking hands when I meet them and to be honest its not particularly a problem for me in my day to day life.

And I love garden playdates for the children - DD having friends round and giving them the garden rather than being cramped indoors and all the things you can do around that is good.
@OnTheBrink1

What other health problems am I causing to myself? My cousins are both doctors and told me to sanitise whatever I could.
I very much doubt that. If it’s true they need to take a hard look at the evidence of as you put it ‘obscenely sanitising’ everything. If they are medical professionals and think this is ok and appropriate then I really hope they are not practicing in my area!
By putting Hugh quantity alcohol sanitizer on your hands repeatedly, you are causing micro tears in your skin. Your skin is a natural and very efficient barrier agains germs and bacteria getting into your bloodstream. The micro tears are breaking that barrier.
In using a sanitizer obsessively long term, you will be firstly ingesting small quantities via your hands and touching food. Not a problem once of twice but repeatedly over weeks and months= problems.
Lastly, wiping out all and every germ in your home repeatedly with sanitizer and disinfectants will know the long term not test and build up your natural immune system and actually cause you (and particularly your children if you have them) to be poorly often with all the thousands of other bugs that exist.
I really hope you don’t have pets either because sanitizers are particurly bad for their stomachs and easily injected by licking you, walking on sanitised surfaces and licking themselves etc.
These high alcohol based sanitizers were not meant for Joe public to be slapping on Willy nilly every 30 mins. They are means for medical professionals and surgeons who actually need them.
Why do you think covid is going to be on your mobile phone anyway? Or any surfaces? Do you think it just lingers around on things waiting to attach to some host like a leech? Bonkers. Please do some research on how long covid particles actually last outside the human body. Get a grip and think about not being so obsessive about plastering that gunk all over your precious skin.

OP, why have you started this thread? To warn us? So someone can come along and reassure you? Just to spread doom?

I really think people need to think before posting these threads. It's now on the 'most active', so people will see this without intentionally looking for it and so many people are on the edge and terrified.

These "It will NEVER end" type threads don't bloody help!
