Sad and awful for them and their families.
Good in terms of overall trend.who would have thought we'd get here when we were at 2000 deaths per day? Thanks to everyone who made this happen.

Yes. Those numbers for hospitalizations and deaths are really coming down now.

DirtyDancing · 19/04/2021 22:43

4 too many. 4 more families broken in grief Flowers

Madhairday · 19/04/2021 22:45

Good news on the general trend though these are weekend figures so will be up again tomorrow. Sad of course for those families affected but I do think covid will always be with us now and some will die every day sadly. I do think there is hope on the horizon though with the vaccine rollout and lockdown having worked well, just a case of being careful now and hoping the other variants don't become dominant.

Gregorsgirl · 19/04/2021 22:46

What? Do you think no-one should ever die?

StealthPolarBear · 19/04/2021 22:49

Yes that's the first time I've registered a number so low since the dashboard started I think. Hopefully they won't start to climb again.

Yes, condolences to all of their families & friends 💐

As a National figure it is a relief and if we only had the original & Kent variation we'd be in a position to start relaxing, but sadly with new variants and RIDICULOUSLY lacking border control, we are not out of the woods. Unfortunately.

Delatron · 19/04/2021 22:54

Compared to deaths from other causes would be interesting for some perspective. But only Covid deaths count.

Pinchoftums · 19/04/2021 22:56

Thank fuck for vaccines.

canary1 · 19/04/2021 22:59

Works out as 18 suicides per day in the Uk - pre Covid figures. Higher now I’m sure.
Condolences to those families too.

450 cancer deaths per day in the Uk. Sorry for those losses too.

Deux · 19/04/2021 23:03

Pre Covid about 11,500 people a week die in the UK so about 1600 a day.

StealthPolarBear · 19/04/2021 23:06

I think about 500,000 die a year so maybe 1000-1500 per day

Orchidflower1 · 19/04/2021 23:07

Bloody hell it’s not a “ death off” with x causing more deaths than Covid.

@StealthPolarBear is ( imho) just saying that things are more positive with regard to the reduction of deaths. Still an awful loss and great sadness for those families but better in terms of numbers than it has been.

I’d been wondering what the figures were for suicide and cancer. That’s really shocking! Of course it’s sad for the 4 families but what’s the alternative, stay locked down forever and everyone die of other things?
Flaxmeadow · 19/04/2021 23:08

It isn't about that.

It's that if those covid numbers get high- we've all seen the steep climbs and steep plunges on the graphs- then it has the potential to very quickly overwhelm the health service and overwhelm it for every patient, vivid or not. That's the problem. Thats what this is all about. Stopping the damn thing running wild

Flaxmeadow · 19/04/2021 23:09

*covid not vivid

wonderstuff · 19/04/2021 23:11

Its really good, one day should never be looked at on its own, remember the figures are reported dead, not date of death, but the trend is definitely downward and should stay low for some time, at least until the end of May I'd have thought.

It's predicted that as we open up infection will rise, but at the moment that isn't happening so at least for now we have breathing space.

Delatron · 19/04/2021 23:11

Yes we have seen the steep rises and the NHS being overwhelmed. Fortunately we have vaccinated a huge proportion of the country so..

StealthPolarBear · 19/04/2021 23:12

No I agree. The '4' is more symbolic than meaningful. I know tomorrow will be higher. But it won't be in the hundreds.

Delatron · 19/04/2021 23:13

Think cancer deaths will be rising now for years to come unfortunately. Many missed diagnoses.

And no it’s not a ‘death off’ but we do need to get some perspective here.

wonderstuff · 19/04/2021 23:14

I think we can be optimistic that we won't see 4 figure reporting of covid deaths again.

Ohnomoreno · 19/04/2021 23:14

People will always die of covid from now on. I can either bin my while life only to not really do much to prevent that, or I can live while I'm alive.

Exactly how I feel right now. Happy to comply with restrictions but am getting a bit concerned that there are many people who would live like this for years.

wonderstuff · 19/04/2021 23:21

I think the plan is good, much as I'm impatient! But we need to recognise that an enormous sacrifice has got numbers this low and they are predicted to rise in the summer.

It's not a case of Covid being 'prioritised' over other issues. It's about making it safe enough and having the staff and capacity to treat those other conditions. Which can't happen if hospitals are overwhelmed.

40% of Covid cases were caught in hospital. Vulnerable cancer and mental health inpatients have been amongst the sad cases of people who died after catching covid in hospital.

My condolences to all those who have lost loved ones, whether to covid or something else.

Gwynfluff · 19/04/2021 23:28

I’d read a about 28% (some hospitals a bit higher) for the hospital acquired rate.
