Follow-on to the happy thread: www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/4210673-Can-the-40-49-age-group-now-book-their-vaccine.

(I'm jabbed, but just here to read happy news of jabs and try to book DH when it's his time.)

I keep seeing loads of comments about London having walking centres for vaccines. Seems like people in London who can’t book yet in the national system could go to this places if so and get the jab ? Are there so many spares because people aren’t attending their appointments? So it’s not really that London hasn’t had the right amount of vaccines really , it’s more that people aren’t attending the places where the vaccines are in London ?

nordica · 21/04/2021 20:20

Usually the walk-ins are only for people who are eligible to book anyway. There was one near me recently but it was strictly for those eligible. It's just a way to bring the vaccine closer to communities to increase take up.

MRex · 21/04/2021 20:24

They only do the ages that are open, and aren't in every borough. In our borough, it seems with neighbours that as soon as the age opens up everyone can get a slot within a week or two, but then no movement to the next age group.

Yes and it's not a great use of my time at least to hang out outside the vaccination centre on odd chance of a spare. There are people doing so outside my local centre from 4pm and have been successful. Why not just open booking for us via GP or vaccination centre then we can have a prebooked appointment like other places?

So should we conclude that there is too much vaccine allocated to London, let's get it reallocated to elsewhere where people really need it as no one is taking it up here?
EasterIssland · 21/04/2021 20:34

@user34254356 not at all. It’s more from a point that maybe it needs to be advertised more (and apologies if already it’s) about this places

Thanks @MRex and @nordica

ChloeDecker · 21/04/2021 21:20

I don't think it's appropriate to delay vaccinating a work-exposed 44 year old because a bunch of 45yo aren't sure yet. Same with 39/40 and any other cut-off.

Hear hear! Grin Wish it was policy but glad some centres and GPs seem to be doing just that.

Wonderful to hear about some invites for the early 40s already.

Pashazade · 21/04/2021 22:16

Thought people might be pleased to hear that in some places (certainly Bath/Bristol) there are campaigns to make sure the homeless are getting their vaccines and people who live on and travel the canals. Which is cool, certainly the canal communities weren't a group I'd considered, mind you I don't Iive near an inland waterway so they don't leap to mind as a community.

Tealightsandd · 21/04/2021 23:02

That is very good to hear Pashazade
It's so important to ensure that homeless, transient, or less traditionally housed people are able to access vaccines.

Sloelydoesit · 21/04/2021 23:05

As mentioned earlier in the thread, my vaccine tomorrow. Hoping I get asked all the questions about my previous medical history. Really want the vaccine. Don't want to appear difficult!

There's loads of people desperately waiting for their vaccine in London, including several posting on here.

The government is focusing on trying to persuade the many vaccine hesitant, instead of offering to the next groups down, i.e. early 40s.

The problem is that high rates of vaccine hesitancy is a risk to everybody. I posted an article a while back about this. The concern is it increases the risk of new variants developing - possibly more vaccine resistant strains.

High hesitancy rates also put at risk vulnerable people - those who are medically unable to have a vaccine, or who might not be as effectively protected by a vaccine.

It might be a good idea to get some additional supplies to London. It's unfair to leave its early 40s (and then 30s) at risk, given the increased risks to Londoners of Heathrow airport.

Yes this.

Also to add to my previous post, the walk ins aren't just because of hesitancy. London has huge numbers of homeless and insecurely housed people, who will often find it a struggle to register with and/or remain with a GP (due to their enforced transient lives).

@Sloelydoesit Good luck for tomorrow. Don't worry about 'being difficult'. You won't be. If they forget to ask, let them know about any relevant medical history. It's important to check these things and they'll want to know if there's any issues.

Hopefully there'll be no problems - and with any luck you'll get a sticker too! Smile

Sloelydoesit · 21/04/2021 23:35

I will kick off more if don't get a sticker!

In a weird way, it's going to be nice to go back to St Thomas'. I stayed there once for 8 weeks. I was under their care for the birth of my son. Stayed on ante natal for 6 weeks, 2 weeks post natal in a room opposite Big Ben and the houses of parliament - have got great pics. my son lived there a lot longer - amazing hospital and the best of care.

All the best! hope you get the sticker and enjoy the trip into London.

Just had my text through and booked my jab for Sunday Smile. I'm 42 and in South Yorks and was not expecting it so soon! Rang my husband (41) to tell him and he's booked his too!!!

MRex · 22/04/2021 09:43

Congrats. National booking still not open for 40 in London.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 22/04/2021 09:45

My 43 year old partner got a GP phone call yesterday, he's booked in for Saturday. Rural Oxfordshire.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/04/2021 09:47

I still can’t book. South West.

Getting fed up. I know of so many people younger than me locally who’ve had the vaccine.

MRex · 22/04/2021 09:50

If it helps @DobbyTheHouseElk, it seems to me with these threads that we get to a point of multiple people getting really fed up that it all feels unfair... And each time that's been within a week of it actually opening.
I'm still thinking it'll open on Sunday night, announcement in a briefing Monday or Tuesday. Do we know when the briefings are next week?

OP posts:
DobbyTheHouseElk · 22/04/2021 09:55

Thanks MRex, feeling fed up today. The papers saying all over 40’s would be done by Easter.

Seemed like they were really speedy with the other age groups, but now it feels slower.

I want to get my life back and I feel the vaccine will enable that. I’m not going shopping or going to crowded places. Everyone I see has had theirs in Feb and they’ve had the second jab now.

I’m still waiting to be eligible.

I hope my age group opens soon.

DenisetheMenace · 22/04/2021 09:59

Just thought people waiting might like to hear: my husband, 61, was booked in for his second jab on 20th May. He was texted on Monday to invite him in nearly 3 weeks sooner, is going in on 1st May.
That tells us, the programme is moving along more quickly than anticipated. Hope you all get your appointments very soon Smile

user34254356 · 22/04/2021 10:01

Agree, i feel it's imminent, quite likely by Monday or Tuesday at this rate. There won't be as many left to vaccinate anyway in the 40-44 cohort as some are already getting called by their GPs.

In SE London especially feels quite imminent since they have called 44 yr olds anyway, so just 40-43 yr olds left now.

Eccle80 · 22/04/2021 10:25

@DobbyTheHouseElk I completely feel your frustrations, I am seeing people under 40 being vaccinated whilst I am still waiting, and it is hard. Really hope they open up to 40-44 soon

Frazzled2207 · 22/04/2021 10:32

The thing is at the moment there’s about 100,000 first jabs a day happening yet there’s 4million 45-49s. Yes many will have had theirs already if CV or HCP however it will take a month to get through 3 million 45-49s at this rate unless a lot of people refuse. I know lots of areas are ahead tho so hoping we all hear soon.
