Denmark withdraw AZ

Just that really! Just read it in the news.

Not looking good for AZ as I'm sure a few more counties will follow suit.

I've been following the press conference. They're really trying to emphasize that in other circumstances they would continue using it, nad that they agree with EMA's assessment that the pros outweigh the cons.

It's only the currently 'good' state of the epidemic in Denmark and the fact that AZ was always a minimal part of our overall order that's led to the decision.

The only bit that annoys me is they won't let people volunteer to use it, because I'd be at the nearest vaccination center with my arm out and ready the second they did.

Schulte · 14/04/2021 14:36

Just read that they had two cased of blood clots in 150,000 vaccines administered. I am waiting to see the latest UK data, surely the weekly yellow card report must come out soon?

TimeQuest01 · 14/04/2021 15:14

It might eventually be fully withdrawn from their vaccination plan, but at the moment, I believe this is for a fortnight (as per this article)

www.pharmaceutical-technology.com/news/denmark-astrazeneca-covid-19/

Short extract:

As a result, the Danish Medicines Agency is investigating the link between AstraZeneca/Oxford vaccine and blood clots during the vaccination pause and will reassess the situation in a fortnight.

“It is important to emphasise that we have not opted out of the AstraZeneca vaccine, but that we are putting it on hold,” said Danish National Board of Health director Søren Brostrøm.

Fieldofmemes · 14/04/2021 16:07

Looking at the amount of noise being made in the UK media about 1. Moderna rollout, 2. "lockdown not vaccines" and 3. mix n match trial studies, I strongly suspect that the UK is doing the same thing as most other countries vis a vis AZ (first doses, at least) - albeit quietly and gradually. Otherwise the Yellow Card figures (due out tomorrow morning I believe @Schulte - but they might sneak them out at night as they apparently did last time!) would make rather difficult reading. See that Danish "blood clot" rate? (assuming it's CVST/VIPIT/VITT rather than a general clot) - it's 1 in 75 000 - somewhat different to our official "1 in 250 000" figure and much closer to Germany's and to David Spiegelhalter's "1.1 in 100 000 risk of serious harm" comment. It would be good to know which age group was vaccinated in Denmark so that we could make more sense of the figures, though.

Schulte · 14/04/2021 16:17

Indeed. Germany now have a total of 43 clotting cases following 3 million AZ vaccinations. That is a lot higher than the 4 in a million that they are constantly quoting in the UK. I was due to be jabbed tomorrow at a hub but have postponed by a couple of weeks as I want to see how this develops!

Fieldofmemes · 14/04/2021 16:26

@Schulte 43 in 3 million - 1 in approx 70 000 then... yes, very different to our figures.
You know, you might get the alternative, even at a vaccination hub... worth asking other people who've already had theirs at the same place.

Schulte · 14/04/2021 16:28

I phoned the hub this morning and they absolutely couldn’t or wouldn’t tell me!

Kaylasmum49 · 14/04/2021 16:44

I'm due my second AZ vaccine in 6 weeks, I really don't think I will have it. My mum died aged 45 of a stroke and I was advised at that time to stop taking the pill because of that.

Bagelsandbrie · 14/04/2021 16:57

Hmm it’s all so worrying. I’m due my second AZ next week and I’m really concerned about what to do, but if I cancel what then?! It doesn’t look like I’ll get to have a different one.

MaxHanno · 14/04/2021 17:01

Approximately 9 women for every 100,000 live births die from complications of pregnancy or childbirth in the UK

Did you think about this before getting pregnant?

Take the jab.....

poppycat10 · 14/04/2021 17:25

There isn't an issue with second doses, if you were ok after the first you're ok.
starfro · 14/04/2021 17:25

If you haven't had a reaction to the first jab, you aren't going to get a reaction to the second - according to Doctors.

Bagelsandbrie · 14/04/2021 17:28

Thank you, that’s reassuring. I am in the clinically extremely vulnerable group and have all kinds of health issues so think I’m just a bag of nerves to be honest!!

Notthemessiah · 14/04/2021 17:33

@starfro

As far as they can tell so far from the relatively low number of second shots compared to the first.
MummyPop00 · 14/04/2021 17:35

‘Take the jab’

Based on stats as they are at this moment in time?

Clotting effect could be more subtle leading to later problems maybe? We don’t really know about medium/longer term issues yet if any do we?

We don’t know because of the desperate rush to general use without longer term trials...because lockdowns cost the UK economy a billion quid per day.

Take it/don’t take it. There are risks involved here whichever way you turn.

BluebellsGreenbells · 14/04/2021 17:41

The stats state you are likely to get clots @ 7% with covid and 0.006% with the vaccine

The vaccine however will prevent you from getting seriouly ill and to some degree passing it on

Depends on your risk of catching covid

murbblurb · 14/04/2021 17:46

'clot' is the operative word here. Can no one do any maths?

IkkeMig · 14/04/2021 17:57

Denmark are experiencing 1 in 40,000 clotting reactions (VITT) to the AZ jab with a high mortality rate. They have 200,000 AZ doses in stock which would be 5 predicted VITT cases with a chance of death. This number is higher than the number of people that would die (predicted) from corona if the AZ doses were not given - that is how the decision has been reached.

Schulte · 14/04/2021 17:57

0.006% ?? Where has that stat come from? That’s 6 in 100,000?

IkkeMig · 14/04/2021 17:59

@TimeQuest01 AZ has been fully withdrawn.

Schulte · 14/04/2021 18:01

One in 40,000. Blimey! Do you know which age group?

HeddaGarbled · 14/04/2021 18:03

I understand that the Czech Republic have approached Denmark about buying their AZ off them.

IkkeMig · 14/04/2021 18:03

@Schulte The lady who died was 60. I believe vaccinations are currently being offered to those 65-69. Or that was who the 200,000 doses in stock were for.

TimeQuest01 · 14/04/2021 18:32

@IkkeMig, thanks, I’ve just realised this article is old.

It came up high up on my search and I assumed it was recent.

I never realised how small Denmark is, population wise, and with their low death and infection numbers, it’s a luxury they can afford.

MrsFezziwig · 14/04/2021 18:35
