Denmark withdraw AZ

Just that really! Just read it in the news.

Not looking good for AZ as I'm sure a few more counties will follow suit.

@MrsFezziwig, yes, we were posting at the same time!

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 14/04/2021 20:04

@HeddaGarbled

I understand that the Czech Republic have approached Denmark about buying their AZ off them.
They have said they are going to. Latvia as well.

On a personal note, while I support the health authority's decision, selfishly it's devastating as the minor slip in the vaccine calendar as a result is the death blow to my small hopes that my 2yr old daughter would see my parents this summer for the first time since she was 7 months old :(

LesserBother · 14/04/2021 20:10

It's odd, as the reports I've read talk about not needing to use it as they've already vaccinated so many and it's only the low risk groups left so risk of vaccination outweighs risk of covid but my in-laws in their 70s haven't been vaccinated yet. Both have multiple health conditions.

newstart1234 · 14/04/2021 20:42

More than 70% of the over 75s had had their first dose as of yesterday so your in laws should certainly have had their invitation for vaccine. Are they fully registered as a resident? It all happens digitally so I can’t see how they wouldn’t have been offered one yet.

Yeah it's strange. It's kinda impossible to live here without being registered. You can barely breathe without a CPRnr.!
LesserBother · 14/04/2021 20:57

They're Danish but not over 75. Still, 30% of over 75s not even having a first vaccine sounds like a significant number still to do to me.

We were hoping to drive over later this year if rules permit, we're both vaccinated already, but wouldn't go if they weren't vaccinated yet.

LesserBother · 14/04/2021 20:59

To be fair, they may have had an invitation to be vaccinated and not mentioned it. I just know they haven't actually had it, as the comment made when I was vaccinated recently was they were still waiting.

According to the plan they should finish giving the first jab to that group in the next couple of weeks. The over 75's group (group 8) only has 227k people and Pfizer alone are delivery over 200k a week. Apparently group 9 (65-74) are started.

That group consists of about 550k people and pfizer are delivering over 200k thousand a week, so hopefully they can expect a message soon.

No idea why their existing conditions didn't push them to a higher group though :(

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 14/04/2021 21:03

45k doses from Moderna next week too, which should help.

newstart1234 · 14/04/2021 21:07

You’ll be fine by later this year to drive over. All the over 50s are due to be finished vaccinated by June just using the Pfizer.

Fieldofmemes · 15/04/2021 09:58

@Schulte - that is the same rate of CVST/VIPIT/VITT as Norway.

NewLevelsOfTiredness · 15/04/2021 19:37

The government is today asking the health authorities if it's possible to let those willing to take the (teeny tiny) risk get the vaccine anyway.

Interesting. The only poll I saw was that about a third to a half of Danes were hesitant about it now. Since AZ was only a minority part of the our order anyway that still leaves enough people to use up our orders, I would have thought.

newstart1234 · 15/04/2021 19:47

I think the doses would be used tbh. Especially by those currently at the back of the queue, my DH is one of them. We want to visit his (increasingly frail) DP but only will do so vaccinated.

LesserBother · 15/04/2021 20:33

Yes, husband reports many friends/family etc. back in Denmark saying the same, they're happy to have it still.

LesserBother · 15/04/2021 20:38

And the Norwegians I know through work are taking bets on whether they'll get vaccinated in 2021.

newstart1234 · 15/04/2021 20:53

It’s quite easy to turn down a vaccine when you know you’ll be offered an alternative in a couple of weeks, more difficult for those at the back to see good vaccine be stuck in the fridge. The real question will be about the J and j vaccine. If that’s not used then yes some will be waiting until Christmas for a vaccine.

Other countries would like to buy it off them

Schulte · 15/04/2021 22:49

The new weekly yellow card report is out. Since the previous week, around one million more first AZ doses were given in the UK. Presumably mostly to younger people. 21 more blood clots were reported. 3 more people died. Unfortunately the MHRA is refusing to say when these incidents happened (the FT did ask) so it’s hard to interpret the numbers, but they do now seem more in line with what’s been reported in Germany, Denmark and Norway.

The MHRA is also beginning to admit there is a higher risk for younger people.

‘ The data suggest there is a higher incidence reported in the younger adult age groups and the MHRA advises that this evolving evidence should be taken into account when considering the use of the vaccine.’

How much longer until this translates into new guidance for the vaccine rollout?

Fieldofmemes · 16/04/2021 05:52

@Schulte thanks, I hadn't seen that. I looked at the Yellow Card print itself and the numbers had clearly gone up but were still quite confusing as they are still split between different conditions e.g. thrombosis, cerebrovascular accident etc. but showing a lot more deaths as a total.
AZ are on the defensive though - Oxford University (not biased at all!) study was published yesterday claiming rates of CVST (not VIPIT/VITT) much higher in Covid than following the vaccines and trying to lump Pfizer in with AZ. Looks a lot like damage limitation to take over headlines, probably timed to coincide with the Yellow Card publication.

Schulte · 16/04/2021 08:09

Yes, definitely an attempt at damage limitation. Seeing as we’re talking about lives lost here it seems a bit questionable!

Lives lost???! For fucks sake. The AZ vaccine has saved thousands of lives.
Schulte · 16/04/2021 08:55

I’m not questioning that at all, but the link between the vaccine and deaths is also becoming clearer. I find the obvious PR tactic that’s trying to deflect from that extremely cynical.

Schulte · 16/04/2021 08:57

And if AZ was the only vaccine, then we would of course accept its risks. But it’s not.

This

Clotsaway · 16/04/2021 09:06

Uk should adopt the same policy other countries have, offer the az to over 50s and an alternative for those 49 and under, just as they have done so for the 18 to 30 year old age group.
