Hi all,
Could some kind soul please link to the thread, it'll be from this time last year I guess, where someone posted about using cheese in coffee as a substitute for milk and I'm sure, also suggested we only buy 'mild meats' as others weren't essential?
I'm not making this up... am I?
I've tried to explain to family members but they've all been a bit Hmm

I remember that! Someone was saying something about going to the shop for bread and milk and someone else was commenting about how they weren’t essential!

There was also one about how, if you lived in the country/rural and didn’t see anyone on your one walk, could you go for another walk. People were saying no you couldn’t as that wasn’t the point. One walk a day only.

BogRollBOGOF · 13/04/2021 13:15

The Crisps On A Bench Brigade was another classic of the Early Covid Era Grin

Flaxmeadow · 13/04/2021 13:19

It was debunked a few weeks ago in another thread. No one ever said it

Other supposed comments were debunked as well

Flaxmeadow · 13/04/2021 13:24

Here is the debunking of it, around these pages

What’s “mild meat” when it’s at home?

BellaintheWychElm · 13/04/2021 13:26

Geek that I am I found it a while back as I was interested to see what had actually been said - I believe it may have started on this thread www.mumsnet.com/Talk/coronavirus/a3871017-People-demanding-a-full-lock-down and at Mon 06-Apr-20 12:35:10 a comment was made saying "we have a been having cheese instead of milk" I think this then morphed into the cheese in coffee that has been bought up.

I'm not sure you can link to a comment of your own, on another thread, saying something didn't happen as evidence of "debunking". I'm not saying anyone said the milk in coffee thing, but you saying "No-one said this" isn't debunking it.

Flaxmeadow · 13/04/2021 13:33

See poster Nellodee comments in the link. It's around those pages

Nellodee looked into it, and other supposed comments. It was a great bit of research

Flaxmeadow · 13/04/2021 13:44

saying something didn't happen as evidence of "debunking

But surely it's up to the accusers to provide evidence of it being said, but they never do.

The myth of 'we were told to put cheese in our coffee' has sometimes turned into a nasty bullying tactic. But there is no evidence that anyone ever said it

BarbaraofSeville · 13/04/2021 14:23

I'm not sure about the specifics, but there were some crazy posts with the classic made up rules of:

You're only allowed to go to your nearest supermarket and can't go more than once a week.

You're only allowed to buy essentials so cannot buy alcohol, crisps or Easter eggs (I think Easter was a little later last year).

You cannot buy a newspaper from the newsagents as that's a special trip, but you can buy a newspaper or Easter eggs while you're in the supermarket during your once a week trip for essentials.

One poster never bought bread and milk, so said that they weren't essential and no-one needed them.

Then there was the 'exercise' rule, where it was once a day for one hour only.

Flaxmeadow · 13/04/2021 14:29

One poster never bought bread and milk, so said that they weren't essential and no-one needed them

But as BellaintheWychElm link shows, someone might say something like
"bread and milk are not EVERYDAY essentials"
This then gets twisted into
"someone said bread and milk are not essential"

And round and round it goes until we end up with the oft repeated "someone told me to put cheese in my coffee"

That cheese post is the stuff of MN legends!! Thank you for linking to it. Astonishing how some people carried on this time last year (and still now in fact..!)

I remember those posts quite fondly looking back.

Lots of If you sit on a bench and eat crisps on your walk you are killing grannies

Oh and remember all the farmers we killed by going for walks in the countryside and touching stiles and gate posts??

Classic crazy covid mumsnet

Wilkolampshade · 13/04/2021 14:51

Oh you're all amazing, thank you, yes, @Flaxmeadow and @BellaintheWychElm
thanks for re-posting Nellodee's screenshot, you're quite right, it was cheese as a alternative source of calcium..

I'm still sure I read something somewhere about 'mild meats' @Allmyarseandpeggymartin, and that this meant a pork fillet or the like but tbh, I really am beginning to doubt my grasp on reality now... Confused

I remember those. We were supposed to believe that farmers, who spend their lives covered in pig shit and farming chemicals were constantly licking their unwashed hands so would catch COVID and die due to walkers coughing COVID all over their stiles and gate posts that they had to touch.

tobee · 13/04/2021 15:14

Interesting that some posters think the bullying only goes one way

moochingtothepub · 13/04/2021 15:27

There was some seriously opinionated posts then, they have reduced but even this January there was a resurgence of the "rules" obsessed brigade. I would horrify them, I shopped 3x a week and went to the off licence on top (very small fridge and no freezer in my defence). This time the fridge and freezer situation is resolved as I've moved but I, shock horror, go to work everyday and each lunch time go to Greggs, I really will rot in hell for that I'm sure Grin

Findahouse21 · 13/04/2021 15:38

I agree about the twisting comments - I commented on one thread last year that I thought bread and milk are odd essentials, given how quickly they go off and that you can't really make a substantial meal with either. Not odd for individuals but almost as a cultural thing that people feel they must have in at all times. It wasnvt a dig at anyone but more of a bit of a social query - is the milk a bit about being able to offer tea etc.

I was quickly shouted down as being miserable and not wanting people to shop when the intent was nothing of the sort

I think it's easy to look back now and laugh but this time last year we don't know what we do now and many people were absolutely terrified of a virus that all we knew about was from horrific images coming from Italy and China.

I never went in for the whole disinfecting shopping etc but I do remember expressing concern on here about the sheer numbers of people passing through our farm at our busiest and most stressful time of year (lambing time) and feeling the fear that every person passing through our home was a potential risk to us.

I'm sorry if you found that ridiculous or amusing Hmm

Wilkolampshade · 13/04/2021 15:51

@tobee
Do you mean the general air atm of 'oh my God weren't they/aren't they all so stupid' I've seen plenty of that in every direction, haven't you? It's been such a vile time, with some people terrified and others baffled and frustrated, so incredibly divisive. Reading back to the links PP have posted above the dementor and granny killing tropes of a year ago were adopted with astonishing speed I thought. My original question was to clarify something which I couldn't quite believe at the time and now feels downright surreal. PP's have answered and that's helpful. Smile

And for the record, I'll happily admit to disinfecting shopping for the first few weeks... Probably last April? I remember my husband coming to pick me up from outside the supermarket and getting into a panic with gloves and car door handles etc. I'm afraid, personally, that's when I gave up..

But how were they a risk to you?

Were you within 2 metres of them for more than a very fleeting amount of time that it takes to pass people?

Did any of them come up to you and touch you or cough in your face?

Did you touch any of the surfaces they touched and then touched your face without washing your hands? In a filthy farmyard?

It's always been known that the risk when outside is so low it's not worth worrying about, especially when you're not actually that close to other people.

What?!

I said I look back on the threads quite fondly. Thats because of how things have moved on.

Why are people so determined to be offended?!
