AstraZeneca - yes or no?

merrymelody · 07/04/2021 05:37

Our local pharmacy is offering the AstraZeneca vaccine. I thought I would jump at the chance to be vaccinated but somehow, I don't feel comfortable about this brand. Am I being silky?

NewIdeasToday · 07/04/2021 05:38

Yes. Just get the vaccination.

merrymelody · 07/04/2021 05:41

Silly, not silky

Mindymomo · 07/04/2021 05:43

I’ve had it. All my family and friends have had it. It’s a huge relief when you get it.

Literallynoidea · 07/04/2021 05:54

YABU

Blessex · 07/04/2021 05:58

I would jump at the chance

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/04/2021 05:59

Yes you are being silly. I'll be getting whatever jab I'm offered.

Rosehip10 · 07/04/2021 06:02

Yes you are being silly.

SaskiaRembrandt · 07/04/2021 06:06

Yes, you are being silly. I've had it, so has my mum, my son, his girlfriend and my my niece. My mum and my son have both had their second dose, and the rest of us will be getting ours when the time comes

Londonnight · 07/04/2021 06:18

Yes, you are being silly. I have had it, my very elderly parents have had it, as have two of my son. Parents have had both doses.
Most of my work mates have had it as well as most of the staff at work [ 150 + ]. Very few issues with any of us.

merrymelody · 07/04/2021 06:24

Normally people in my age group will be offered theirs in June. By the government. So yes, it's tempting but I've read that the AstraZeneca shouldn't be given to the under 50s and also, that it's significantly less effective than the others.🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
Roonerspismed · 07/04/2021 06:28

I’m following this with interest but no. But not just because it’s AZ but because I want to see longer term data on them all.

In relation to the AZ I am confused. The data seems to show no particular pattern but there is talk of avoiding it in the young. So it must come down to your own particular risk from covid. If you are young and a low BMI with no risk factors then that to me is different to the obese asthmatic.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/04/2021 06:29

And what if it's AstraZeneca that you're offered? Will you turn it down?

I'm 30 and as I said, will take whatever jab is offered to me.

Blessex · 07/04/2021 06:30

Significantly less effective? That’s just not the case. Did you see the real life Scottish data? That actually it is more effective. I actually want the AZ one for this reason. I really am going to tear my hair out with how this whole vaccine rollout appears to be being hijacked at every turn. You know what the REALLY terrifying thing is. Whilst all this is going on the virus is out there busy mutating. If you want to fear something do not fear this vaccine. Fear a fast transmitting and mutating virus. That is absolutely terrifying. We have no idea how it is going to show up next.

motherrunner · 07/04/2021 06:34

Well said @Blessex.

I had the AZ a month ago. Felt rough for 24 hours but the relief outweighed any side effects.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 07/04/2021 06:37

It's actually getting a bit suspicious, the sheer amount of threads about this.

Sprining · 07/04/2021 06:40

It is less effective than Pfizer. And more risky for young people, especially women.

I am waiting for other vaccines to be available.

Blessex · 07/04/2021 06:44

@Waxonwaxoff0 agree. I am so desperate now for my vaccine. There is not yet any causal link between the blood clots and the vaccine and even if there is then medically it is so small it counts as a very rare side effect WHICH YOU GET WITH ALL BLOODY MEDICINES. But none of us usually blink at that because it is not being so hyped up in the media or hijacked by people with clear agendas - political or monetary. There is too much publishing of the data. We don’t all sit and pour over the efficacy data of every vaccine we have. And even if you did do this in this instance, the AZ vaccine has excellent efficacy scores. EXCELLENT. And in some instances (see real life Scottish data) BETTER than the other vaccines.

Seriously if people really understood the implications of letting this virus run riot while we all pontificate they would be running now to go and get jabbed. We cannot afford to let multiple new strains of this virus happen. We don’t know how it is going to mutate next. That is the only thing that terrifies me.

Blessex · 07/04/2021 06:46

@Sprining well good for you. You know your efficacy data well then. NOT. As long as you let someone else have your place in the queue then you jolly on.

Blessex · 07/04/2021 06:48

*pore over

Sprining · 07/04/2021 06:49

Yes I do know the efficacy data. And I can be calm and rational about the situation.

Hysterical screaming that the sky is falling doesn’t help anyone

orangejuicer · 07/04/2021 06:50

@Sprining

It is less effective than Pfizer. And more risky for young people, especially women.

Juat adding a lone voice here - I'm under 40 and I've had it. Only after effects were fatigue and feeling a bit hungover for 24 hours.

Have the jab OP.

Blessex · 07/04/2021 06:51

@Sprining I would say no you don’t.

Blessex · 07/04/2021 06:53

@Sprining and you know what. After one bloody year of being locked down and then reading comments like yours on a forum like this - yes that causes for a bit of hysteria. The vaccine is our only way out of this nightmare. I want to bloody live again. And if that means I get annoyed with misinformation being glibly spread then call me a ‘hysterical’ woman. Which by the way is not the most female friendly term either.

YukoandHiro · 07/04/2021 06:54

Yes. As an example, if you're a woman in your 40s with no underlying conditions the chances of death by blood clot after AZ are some like 2.5 million to one, and your chances of dying of coronavirus are just under 1,000 to one.
Take it.

scaevola · 07/04/2021 06:56

There are something like 30 cases in 18 million doses, so a 1 in 600,000 chance of this type of clot. 7 have been fatal, so 1 in 2.5m

The risk of getting a clot (admittedly of a different type, but still potentially serious) from the pill is 3 to 9 per 10,000 (source FDA) and the number dying is 3 to 10 per million (source BBC)
