AstraZeneca - yes or no?

Our local pharmacy is offering the AstraZeneca vaccine. I thought I would jump at the chance to be vaccinated but somehow, I don't feel comfortable about this brand. Am I being silky?

It's not Ebola or Rubella!

Weirdly fascinating juxtaposition there

epcot15 · 07/04/2021 09:34

@Mummywantsaweewee

Those calling people stupid etc for having the common sense to question a brand new vaccine that’s currently under investigation need to shut the hell up. If you cant be polite say nothing! There’s nothing stupid in taking the time to evaluate your own risk and await clearer explanations of potential risks. It’s downright sensible. To be quite frank, immediately jumping to the conclusion someone is “stupid”, and anti vaxxer or a fan of conspiracy theories, says more about the poster than anything else. Just shows you’re narrow minded and cannot handle anyone questioning the mainstream narrative. Have some decency. If you aren’t willing to partake in a polite discussion then get off the thread.
Exactly this. These posters just come across as really aggressive and resorting to insults and name calling says more about them than the op who is asking a genuine question out of concern about a vaccine that is currently all over the news! I wonder if they speak to people like that in real life although I'd imagine not as they must all be hiding in the house staying safe wfh.

@gamerchick I do this already and have never taken the pill

And never been on a plane either?

I also think it's being done deliberately because of the profit thing. There's no profit in this particular vaccine is there? Which also says the government's of the developed world don't actually give a toss about their citizens.

pickingdaisies · 07/04/2021 09:35

Survivors of covid have an increased chance of brain injury caused by the virus, up to six months after contracting the disease, study just released today.
I understand why the reporting on blood clots is scaring people, but with this new study, I think you need a really good reason not to have the AZ. Report on BBC news.
@Sprining and you know what. After one bloody year of being locked down and then reading comments like yours on a forum like this - yes that causes for a bit of hysteria. The vaccine is our only way out of this nightmare. I want to bloody live again. And if that means I get annoyed with misinformation being glibly spread then call me a ‘hysterical’ woman. Which by the way is not the most female friendly term either.
People like you get on my tits. THE VACCINE IS NOT THE WAY OUT. You can still get the virus, you can still spread the virus. Sure the effects will be reduced, but it’s not an all singing, all dancing cure. Life will never be the same again. Humans are enroaching into territories they shouldn’t be, they are displacing all kinds of animals/organisms from their natural habitats. Once (or should I say if) this virus goes, another one will inevitably take it’s place. Also once the virus mutates, your vaccine isn‘t going to be effective unless they can keep on top of the mutations like they do the flu.
By all means delude yourself, it’s a “free country” after all.

YogaLite · 07/04/2021 09:40

I can't help wondering that AZ jab being restricted to older generation is an economic move to protect younger and more useful/productive generation and as for the older ones, well, who cares if they live or die.

LilacTrees · 07/04/2021 09:40

Some people have done very well out of Covid. I see Pfizer and Moderna vaccines have created new billionaires.

THE VACCINE IS NOT THE WAY OUT. It is the only way out actually. Given the efficacy is very high, your best chance to survive the pandemic is to have the vaccine, and for all of us to do the same to stop the mutations.

We may need to have a vaccine every year, and for some it might be bi annual vaccine, but this is the only route out of both the virus and the mutations. Nothing else will work, and we really will have to live like this forever (and it could get much worse)

Or we could give up and see tens of millions die instead.

Daisydoor12 · 07/04/2021 09:44

@gamerchick as an adult haven’t been on a plane and no intention of doing so, I was taken as a child.

@Ethelfromnumber73 would you believe me if I said I did and more will be clearer by Friday?!

Oldmrswasherwoman · 07/04/2021 09:46

My father in law died of Covid and I naturay have strong feelings on the subject. I feel enormously priviledged to be 40 years old and have had my AZ vaccine last week, particularly considering 4000 people dying in a day in Brazil. There are people in this world who would give their right arm for this vaccine, any vaccine and are unlikely to get the chance any time soon. No way I would turn my nose up at it.
If people don't want it, then choose not to have it (and any consquences of not being able to do things that it brings, in the same way I'll take the consequences of choosing to have it) But you can stick your smug, selfish holier than thou, I can't imagine why anyone would choose to take it attitude up your arse - you need the rest of us to take it for this country to be anyway near getting back to normal, so why don't you say thank you and keep quiet.

Itsalonghaul · 07/04/2021 09:46

daisy have you actually seen anyone in hospital with covid? Do you understand how painful, terrifying and lonely it is?

I am just wondering why you would wish it on anyone?

Do you feel you have some kind of halo of immunity, and your parents and family somehow will make it unscathed? If so, based on what exactly?

MarcelineMissouri · 07/04/2021 09:46

@YogaLite

So we shut down society for over a year to help protect the elderly who are most at risk from covid but now decide to see them off with vaccines instead? Sure, that makes sense!

Not to mention the fact that actually this vaccine (whatever the situation ends up being with the clots) has been proven to be highly effective against severe disease...

@Daisydoor12 no, I wouldn't. If there was a serious safety signal then I doubt that the powers that be would be waiting a few days to announce it.

It’s not the way out to living a normal life again though is it? It will help control, but probably not cure the problem. People will never be able to live their lives like they did pre pandemic, especially those that liked to travel the world.
Canigooutyet · 07/04/2021 09:53

The name calling is ridiculous. Imagine how things would go down if people started saying you're an idiot, moron, Fuckwit, tool for being a guinea pig?

Yea awesome you had the vaccine and had none of the side effects. Others have had some horrific side effects and not just this brain clot thing.

I'm under 50, cev, consultations advice to wait because of unknown contras. Suppose they are also morons or whatever?

toocold54 · 07/04/2021 09:55

I had it about 2 weeks ago (female, 30 and relatively healthy) and I am fine. I had nausea and a headache for the first 4/5 days but not bad enough to stop me going into work, shopping, driving etc.
I am hearing more about the effect of covid on children who don’t have symptoms which spurred me on to get it as I am a single parent and work with children.
Don’t feel pressured to have something you’re unsure of though as it’s completely your choice but also don’t let the anti-vaxers try and scare you just read up on the facts.

Amyz78 · 07/04/2021 09:56

I've had it and I'm 30.

Itsalonghaul · 07/04/2021 09:58

prt once enough people have had the vaccine, and hospital admissions are back to normal (they almost are now) then yes we will see a return to normal life. I am quite confused as to why you think we won't?

We will see those UNVACCINATED people continue to be ill and die, yes but no one else. The vaccines do actually work - that has already been proved. So yes I can see an almost complete return to normal, with testing continuing and updating vaccinations - but yes I do believe I will be travelling this year, and I am having a party in June and my life from next week onwards will look vastly different to what it does now.

If you want to stay in an endless lockdown be my guest, but the future is vaccines.

Hellohello53452 · 07/04/2021 09:58

No, it’s an experimental vaccine well registered as gene therapy actually.
Depending of your risk of COVID I think people are right to be cautious.
I wouldn’t be happy having it until the clinical trials finish in 2023

52andblue · 07/04/2021 10:00

@Mummywantsaweewee

I don’t think it’s silly when they’re investigating a link between AZ and rare blood clots. I think it’s sensible if that’s what is right for you.
Agreed. We all need to make the right decision for our own circs.

For me, aged 53, normal BMI but a respiratory issue (sleep apnea for which I use a CPap machine) as well as pernicious anaemia its a no brainer. I am a single parent to 2 disabled kids who need me around.

Personally, I hope that a wider range of people take up both doses of whatever vaccine they are offered asap before the virus mutates further, then I will feel safer -we will ALL be safer. But you cannot force people to accept a vaccine (though 'passports' might make life without quite limited) or to discuss how they feel about it. I do wonder what the EU statement later today will say re the Ox/Az shot.

fwiw I had my 1st dose of Ox/Az one month ago.
(Felt rough for 48 hours. I think I had C-19 mildly last Easter?)
I hope my 2nd dose is not delayed.

BIWI · 07/04/2021 10:01

@merrymelody

Normally people in my age group will be offered theirs in June. By the government. So yes, it's tempting but I've read that the AstraZeneca shouldn't be given to the under 50s and also, that it's significantly less effective than the others.🤷‍♀️
Where have you read this? Can you post a link to these claims?

You are being silly. You know what the risks of Covid are (because I've seen you post about them). The risks of serious side effects are much less than the risks of getting the virus.

Pyewackect · 07/04/2021 10:02

Take your chances with Covid then - it's your funeral !.

Itsalonghaul · 07/04/2021 10:02

hello The AZ vaccine has been used for years, is made of natural substances and was used for SARS in Asia and elsewhere for a very long time. It is not experimental in the real sense of the word at all.
You are referring I assume to Pjizer and Moderna when you are talking about gene therapy? I think you need to be far more clear about that. Your post is misleading.

Barney60 · 07/04/2021 10:03

I totally get your point, was adamant i wanted the other vaccine, but i was only offered the AZ. So i did lots of research. If you are on the pill, you have a larger chance of a blood clot than having your AZ vaccine.
I did have the AZ in the end, i was ill for a week from it, but ive heard those that have had covid have some response. Go for it, stats outweigh the odds.

SweetAsANutt · 07/04/2021 10:03

AstraZeneca shouldn't be given to the under 50s

Where have you heard this? I'm 28, had my first AZ dose in Feb and due my 2nd dose of AZ in May and not heard a thing about this...
