AstraZeneca - yes or no?

Our local pharmacy is offering the AstraZeneca vaccine. I thought I would jump at the chance to be vaccinated but somehow, I don't feel comfortable about this brand. Am I being silky?

I had mine about 3 weeks ago.

Husband is the super-anxious type and has been reading all the media stuff about clots etc. Says he's really worried about me. I don't GAF. I had Covid 19 once and it was horrible. Anything to reduce the symptoms' effects is a bonus in my eyes. I took aspirin a few days before and after I had the jab. I have an ectopic heartbeat and am considered obese, so I am at increased risk of blood clots. Other than that, I felt sick for a couple of days and my arm hurt, but I've had no other symptoms.

YABVU

Had 2 lads at work talking about getting a fake vaccine passport for when the time comes to go on holiday.

Are you as dopey as these two???

I told them, just get the jab and you can have a free vaccine passport!!!

No words

borntobequiet · 07/04/2021 07:50

I’ve had both of mine (AZ) and am very glad to have done so.

Here's the link for the info that someone posted a few days ago, from Canadian source.

KeepWashingThoseHands · 07/04/2021 07:54

COVID is not going away and will not be the last global pandemic. These are FACTS.

I wonder if AZ will bother investing in vaccines in the future given the backlash they’ve faced and bad PR from really stupid media coverage and people too stupid to read through it.

Dentistlakes · 07/04/2021 07:57

I have an appointment for my first vaccination today and will be having it, AZ or Pfizer. Yes, I feel slightly uneasy given the press, but I believe the risk is low and outweighed but the benefits of getting it.

merrymelody · 07/04/2021 07:59

Not a question of refusing it! The AZ one's being offered at a local pharmacy for those who want it. Which I do but being a worry wart, I'm worrying. Don't bite my head off, please.

Honestly you can't ask a question about the vaccine without getting your head bit off on here! You have every right to be concerned. You do what you feel it right for you.

Are you always this rude??

Given the reports, op has every right to be concerned about the Astra Zeneca (FYI: I have had both doses)

Oldmotherhubbardlivesinashoe · 07/04/2021 08:05

I'm in my 30's and I've had it. Yes my arm hurts and I felt like I had flu for a couple of days but I'll be having the second dose without hesitation.

Spied · 07/04/2021 08:07

I've had my first AZ.
Second appointment is later this week.
I will be having it.
I'm worried a little but if I contracted covid I'd be worried a lot.
I'd rather take my chances with the vaccine than with a virus that has killed so many younger and healthier than myself.

pommedeterre · 07/04/2021 08:10

@Sprining

It is less effective than Pfizer. And more risky for young people, especially women.

I am waiting for other vaccines to be available.

It is not less effective than Pfizer.

Pfizer also has had side effects and deaths that may or may not be linked, but happened shortly after receiving the virus.

gamerchick · 07/04/2021 08:11

@merrymelody

I really really want to be vaccinated but I'm worried about possible side effects. So I thought I'd ask on MN to see what the consensus is...
Rather than read the other zillion of threads on it?

This is getting ridiculous. I understand how out if control of their lives this past year has done to people and this is something they think they have some control over. But seriously? Have you ever taken the pill?

I've given up trying to convince people to take this jab. If you want to take your chances with covid then crack on.

PandoraP · 07/04/2021 08:12

It’s a no from me and I am usually the first in the queue for a vaccine. Get my flu jab every year and not a conspiracy theorist at all.
I am from Norway so reading what is reported at home, I think AZ will be stopped for the under 50s in many countries soon.

Pyewackect · 07/04/2021 08:12

Take your chance with Covid then : it’s your funeral !

Mummywantsaweewee · 07/04/2021 08:12

Those calling people stupid etc for having the common sense to question a brand new vaccine that’s currently under investigation need to shut the hell up. If you cant be polite say nothing! There’s nothing stupid in taking the time to evaluate your own risk and await clearer explanations of potential risks. It’s downright sensible. To be quite frank, immediately jumping to the conclusion someone is “stupid”, and anti vaxxer or a fan of conspiracy theories, says more about the poster than anything else. Just shows you’re narrow minded and cannot handle anyone questioning the mainstream narrative. Have some decency. If you aren’t willing to partake in a polite discussion then get off the thread.

pommedeterre · 07/04/2021 08:14

@perfectpizza

No, I wouldn't. I have had both doses of Pfizer but would not have Astra.
Weird decision making/justification. Pfizer and Moderna have had issues too. At one point Pfizer had more blood clots associated with it than AZ (not sure now as haven't looked that up for a bit).

The press just haven't reported them as much. Which is weird.

Yet this is a perfectly polite post, non emotive and full of facts?
princesspeppax · 07/04/2021 08:16

I am in the same position 😥 i've had covid and symptoms were mild now I've got my jab tomorrow (i'm under 30, no underlying issues) I thought I would be so happy but the media is making me terrified of going for it, one minute I think i've had covid so surely I would have antibodies then I think don't be so silly millions have had the AZ and chances of something happening are slim. I'm so anxious and undecided

baroqueandblue · 07/04/2021 08:17

"The vaccine is our only way out of this nightmare. I want to bloody live again."

Depending on your point of view, the vaccine is the way into a whole other kind of nightmare. Don't ignore the way it's being used as a political wooden horse to keep us all in our places. So, not a reason of itself to overlook concerns about the vaccine's safety.

Livpool · 07/04/2021 08:17

I am 40 and had the AstraZeneca vaccine about 4 weeks ago and had no issues

littlepeas · 07/04/2021 08:18

The vast majority of people who have received the AZ vaccine are not in the group who are potentially at risk of this rare clot (women under 55). We therefore do not know the risk - not enough women under 55 have been vaccinated yet! The 1 in 2.5 million risk that is always brought up on these threads is a whole population risk based on those who have been vaccinated. I am personally choosing to wait until more is known (late 30's with no additional risk factors for COVID).

gamerchick · 07/04/2021 08:18

Isn't it just. It's a testament to how influential the media is on the masses. Quite scary really.

MrsPworkingmummy · 07/04/2021 08:23

I'm 35 and had the AZ last Wednesday (as did my husband of 52). We were both ill the following few days afterwards. A week later and I'm still not recovered. Had all the expected symptoms, plus really long lasting weak legs (my legs are still aching) and sore/swollen gums. I am slim and fit and healthy otherwise. I will not be having the second dose. I take Yasmin contraceptive pill which has a blood clot warning, I've recently had major surgery on my neck and just feel like my body is telling me not to have the second dose.
