Red List Countries

Can someone explain the thinking behind the list? Is it purely econ-political?

Why is Pakistan (5k cases yesterday) on it but not India (103k cases yesterday)?

Why is The Seychelles on it (24 deaths in total) but not the USA (567K deaths in total)?

Why the UAE with its high vaccination rate but not Mexico?

Why are France and Italy not on it with the rising cases and the new variants?

Is someone just sticking a pin in a map?

I don’t get it either tbh. UAE has dealt with this whole thing brilliantly (although I’m sure with the hatred of Dubai on here most will agree). DH worked there for 4 years and needs to go back, all his friends much much younger than him have all been vaccinated.

FredaFox · 05/04/2021 16:53

Money!

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 05/04/2021 16:55

Are you expecting it to make sense? I think your expectations are a bit high.

If there are criteria, I don’t see why they couldn’t just publish them. It’s what they do where I’m from and I don’t see any reason not to if the criteria are clear and transparent.

Oldowl · 05/04/2021 17:10

Glad it is not just me that finds this list of countries random and incomprehensible.

Where is the link to the countries?

starfish88 · 05/04/2021 17:28

@FredaFox that would make sense in some cases but then why put the UAE on the list. Although I think there it was more to do with having to be seen to do something about the influences 'working' there.

I think UAE is often used as a transit destination. So people are actually flying in there from other destinations then changing planes. Easier to put it on the list.

Im not sure the list ever made much sense though. They always seem to target Portugal even when cases were low.

lljkk · 05/04/2021 18:10

I suspect India & Pakistan are under-detecting real cases -- poor surveillance.

I can't explain the others.

Firefliess · 05/04/2021 18:12

I think it's more related to where new variants that may resist the vaccine are circulating, rather than case rates.

Travel bans implemented for visitors from Philippines, Pakistan, Kenya, and Bangladesh from 4am Friday 9 April

Oldowl · 05/04/2021 18:14

India is not on the list and its cases are sky high, as are Turkey's.

IMO it is stupid that countries with higher infection rates and lower vaccination rates such as USA and UAE could possibly be considered for a Green List, especially with higher levels of variants of concern, as with USA.

So it is clearly not about health.

France should clearly be subject to greater restrictions than it is.

This government was never about our good public health - just look at 150000 deaths. That was always going to be acceptable collateral damage or else they would have gone down a totally different policy route, even last June/July rates were low enough to close the borders and that is enough death, but they did not do that, they allowed unlimited foreign holidays. And look to be edging that way now.

iamnotok · 05/04/2021 18:19

Beth Rigby only person brave enough to mention Chile on a national stage - better vaccination rates than the UK, but had to close all borders due to the vaccination programme being undermined by variants of concern.

if this UK allows this Green/Amber crap, that will be us in autumn/winter and there will be thousands more deaths and more fucking endless repeated lockdowns.

Except Chile hasn't actually got higher vaccination rates than the Uk. Have a look yourself at the Our World in Data website ourworldindata.org/covid-vaccinations Chile has vaccinated 37% of people (and most of them only within the last few weeks) compared with 48% in the UK.

Is the main problem in India the British variant? In that case it’s not such a big threat to the country as what would be the South African one hence why it might not be in the list (nor France )
Liveandletlive3 · 05/04/2021 18:36

I'm completely baffled by this and cant make sence of why some countries have been added as others not who are far worse now than some of the "red list" countries.

Economic ties maybe be affected. My own opinion about the india and pakistan situation is that the government doesn't want to put any strain on India purely down to the fact that it is manufacturing our vaccine and shipping it over. I have some pakisyani friends and they said the situation is not great but not as bad as India have had it.

UAE was probably put on the list due to many influencers going away on "business" just to get away from covid at home and have a holiday.

But that's just my opinion.

Look at Israel. As Whitty said, you can't look at the extreme of Chile whilst ignoring the other extreme of Israel.

Chile also didn't even start vaccinating at all until February. Also I swear they had previously opened up and eased restrictions whilst they were still getting 4000-5000 case a day?

Also all foreign arrivals have had to quarantine for 10 days and be monitored. Yes it's not an island country and has a HUUUGE border, but the rises in cases can't all be pinned on international travel.

DdraigGoch · 05/04/2021 19:22

France really should be on the list because their case rates are awful at the moment. I'd like to bet that the reason they aren't is Dover.

ihearttc · 05/04/2021 19:33

@iamnotok

Where are you getting that the UAE have low vaccination numbers?

As I understand it (and clearly I might be wrong) they’ve vaccinated a huge amount of people. Nearly all of DH’s friends and work colleagues have been done and they are much younger than him (he is 43).

Abraxan · 05/04/2021 20:08

UAE vaccination rate doesn't seem that low.

Ex colleague is over there. She's early 50s I think. She's had both vaccines, as have most people she knows it would seem from her posts on social media.
They appear to have a different system where they can choose what time they go and it's in large drop in/drive through hubs. She was in a 5 hour queue for jab 1 and 2 hours for jab 2.

In my OP I said UAE has a high vaccination rate as I have been following the vaccine tracker... sad, I know!!

Are there any countries on the Amber list?

Amber list doesn’t exist as of now All have to quarantine , if red then in a hotel , the rest at home
Delatron · 05/04/2021 20:47

Yes pretty sure UAE are doing well with both vaccinations and cases.

It’s because people are flying in there from hotspots and using it as a connection.
