Anyone else regretting their choice to get vaccinated?

onthetracks · 03/04/2021 09:27

I had my first vaccine 4 weeks ago (AZ)
I was really put off my having it and didn’t feel 100% happy, but since I’m clinically vulnerable to Covid and I also look after my elderly grandmother who is Clinically extremely l vulnerable, i thought it was the right thing to do.

Since having the vaccine I read no end of negative reports, side effects, blood clots and now deaths.

I’m terrified that I’m going to develop a blood clot and die.

I know this may sound irrational, which is surprising for me as I’m usually able to rationalise things.
But I can’t help feeling that it’s all been a bit rushed.
We’re all so desperate for normal life that we’ve jumped at the chance to be injected with something that we don’t actually know is safe.

Only now that millions of people are having the vaccine are we being alerted to adverse effects.

I’m really starting to regret that I’ve had the vaccine and I honestly don’t think I will go for my 2nd jab. 😣

To put it in perspective...

The UK has identified 30 cases of rare blood clot events following the use of the AstraZeneca vaccine.

This makes up 0.0002% of the 18.1 million doses given in the UK and is in line with the natural rate of blood clot occurrences.

I've also been taking the pill for years which can cause breast cancer and blood clots.

everybodysang · 03/04/2021 10:03

God no. I had AZ last week, loads of side effects, today is the first day I have felt vaguely ok. But I am still elated to have had it and very excited for my next appointment in June.

FindingMeno · 03/04/2021 10:03

I think you need to be more worried about the fact you're worrying so much about it.
Put it to the back of your mind. Keep telling yourself you are fine, and you will be fine and stop exposing yourself to the scaremongering.

callthevet · 03/04/2021 10:03

I'm delighted it was done. I was ill for a week after but fine now. I'd rather take the risk with the vaccine than die of Covid

TJ17 · 03/04/2021 10:04

Also @onthetracks there have been deaths but there is no indication that it's BECAUSE of the vaccine...

The deaths would most likely have occurred anyway as there have been no more blood clots in people who have had the vaccine than usual (people die of blood clots every day) it just so happens that they had the AZ vaccine.

If 30 people had the vaccine and then got hit by a bus it does not mean it is because they had the vaccine...

ilovesooty · 03/04/2021 10:04

Ffs. If you're not going to bother with your second vaccine because of this (in my view) unwarranted and irrational thinking just make sure you cancel it and don't mess people around. And if you're not going to bother to be fully vaccinated don't whinge about any restrictions which might come into play.

boxingdayagain · 03/04/2021 10:04

A patient of mine. Young( 30's), no underlying health conditions, developed Covid at Christmas. He passed it on to his father, who sadly died. The patient himself had developed blood clots in his lungs as a result of Covid, which means he's now got a shortage of breath, had previously been coughing up blood, and now has to be on blood thinners for the rest of his life. It's really concerning. Far greater risk of blood clots from Covid.
Nothing has been proven, re AZ and blood clots. In fact the sheer amount of the vaccine administered so far ( over 18 million I think?) compared with the minute number that have suffered a clot demonstrates that it is no more prevalent in the vaccinated group compared to the unvaccinated group.
You could be at greater risk of developing a clot from Covid, from taking the pill, from pregnancy and childbirth, from inactivity, from flying...
honestly you need to look at the bigger picture here and take a sensible course of action

Pinotwoman82 · 03/04/2021 10:07

Don’t regret it at all and can’t wait for my 2nd in June.

IrishMamaMia · 03/04/2021 10:07

I'm not worried because I'm following the science :)

Me too. Felt dreadful for 5 days, but still thrilled to have had the (AZ) vaccine. Looking forward to my next one some time in May.
NC4Todayx · 03/04/2021 10:08

30 blood clotting issues out of 18 million recipients. Those are odds I happily take to protect myself and others from Covid.

0.000166%

Please get a grip and stop the drama.

LondonJax · 03/04/2021 10:10

No regrets at all and I'm booked for the AZ again in a couple of months.

I was on the pill for 20 years - blood clot risk there but millions of women take it regardless and ignore the potential risk when there are other ways of contraception. There's no other way of vaccination.

Plus, the team in Canada who first identified blood clots in a small number of people who had had the vaccination has said he would not advocate the vaccination being shelved for a small number of clots which, at the moment, his team have not even proved are linked. His view is that the vaccination could trigger a response in people who have something underlying in their body (unknown to them) and that could have manifested itself at a later date anyway. It seems that the body sends a message that there has been a wound (when there hasn't) and the platelets do their job a bit too well. So it seems to be a response to the vaccination rather than something in the vaccination. And, his team are now working on a treatment for the clotting.

Obviously there will be people who have reactions to the vaccinations just like everything else we put in our bodies. My friend is allergic to penicillin as are a small minority of people - it doesn't stop penicillin curing me, nor will it stop me taking it if need be.

Dragongirl10 · 03/04/2021 10:11

There may be a link to the unusual blood clots, there may not be, further research is needed. But the thing to remember is that the rate is still around 1 in 2.5million for the blood clots which is far, far lower than the death rate from covid.

This ^

Op have you ever taken the contraceptive pill? the risks of blood clots from that is 1-2%
You have much more chance of getting cancer, dying in a car accident, being run over by a bus!
All medicine has some small risks but the risk of the disease is many times greater.

I too have had my first AZ jab and will be perfectly happy to have the second...

emmathedilemma · 03/04/2021 10:12

Not had it yet but I'm getting impatient now and it's definitely not put me off. The risk of blood clots is far higher from other things, including the pill which many people take without it hitting the press.

UnlikelybutTrue · 03/04/2021 10:12

I take HRT and a whole pharmacy of drugs for blood pressure, heart rhythm problems, joint problems and pain. Reading the leaflets in each pack is terrifying. No drug is risk free but it’s weighing up these risks and making the most rational choice as to which is likely to cause the most problems. For me the risks from the vaccine seemed far less likely than the risks of having a moderate to severe case of covid.

reprehensibleme · 03/04/2021 10:12

No. Eagerly awaiting second jab

leli · 03/04/2021 10:12

No regrets.

Sarahandco · 03/04/2021 10:13

As I understand it, you would know you had blood clots within 20 days so sounds like you do not need to worry about that. People have died - 7.

I do not want to have it but have not been offered yet so have not had to make that decision yet.

MadeOfStarStuff · 03/04/2021 10:13

Not at all, I’m very grateful to have had it and can’t wait for my second jab

Paracetamol, the pill, penicillin all have side effects including extremely serious ones in rare cases. We still take them because the benefits outweigh the risks. And the same is true for the vaccine.

Weirdfan · 03/04/2021 10:13

Hesitate to say this on here but I'm generally a bit over cautious about vaccinations so I would have expected the current news stories about AZ to put me off having it. Not so as it goes, I would happily have it tomorrow if they offered and am not remotely concerned about side effects.

viques · 03/04/2021 10:14

Nearly 1800 people are killed in car accidents in the UK each year. I think they ought to stop people driving and get those killer cars off the road. I for one am going to walk everywhere now because, well because.......
TiddleTaddleTat · 03/04/2021 10:15

Having had long covid for over a year and being under 35 I am delighted at having had the AZ vaccine two weeks ago

KezzabellaB · 03/04/2021 10:16

Not at all, no

onthetracks · 03/04/2021 10:16

@Vickles20

Is this your first ever post on mumsnet? Just to stir up paranoia. I smell a rat people. Don’t bite.
@Vickles20

What a bizarre thing to say? We are all first time posters at some point.

I’m not stirring any paranoia, unless of course you’re paranoid and my post has triggered you.
In which case I apologise, but that wasn’t my intention.
