Did anyone see the new report last night ?

So I know our government is donating to Covax, so is there international help from WHO to help them ? What is going on ? Are anyone like the Red Cross helping ?

To the next poster who mentions

It’s just flu
It only affects old people
Herd immunity
Lockdowns are inhuman
It only affects a small percentage of people.

Just watch the film
I am aware it’s a different variant but that can happen anywhere.
Those poor people
And their ignorant leader.

I know. My mum said that the lockdowns were a complete waste of time, but you only have to look at countries like Brazil and see how bad things could have been.

Brazil has a very high obesity rate. Even higher than the UK. I have to admit that this has all spurred me on to try and be healthier and lose weight.

Cornettoninja · 02/04/2021 09:38

Brazil concerns me greatly. It isn’t just the prevalence of disease there, that’s bad enough, it’s their leaderships determination to actively oppose any measures that might help including vaccine procurement.

I came across a point I hadn’t considered on another site; even if we donated millions of vaccines tomorrow their health care system is basically broken at this point and distribution to the point of physically getting vaccines in arms would be a monumental task. Their staff and centres are overwhelmed with no capacity for a widespread vaccination programme without outside intervention (which isn’t the easiest to come by at this particular point in history).

Unsure33 · 02/04/2021 09:49

Good points .

I must research COVAX out of interest to see if they intend just to help with vaccines or research as well .

Yes they did not say if younger people were affected because of the variant or obesity. Perhaps they dont even know ?

Those poor people and those working in the field hospitals.

OP posts:
Unsure33 · 02/04/2021 09:51

If they were offered help with mass vaccination it is not clear they would even take it ?

And then they would have to make sure it coped with the variant .

OP posts:
Unsure33 · 02/04/2021 09:55

Ironically france helped set up covax

Coordinated by Gavi, the Vaccine Alliance, the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (CEPI) and the WHO, COVAX will achieve this by acting as a platform that will support the research, development and manufacturing of a wide range of COVID-19 vaccine candidates, and negotiate their pricing. All participating countries, regardless of income levels, will have equal access to these vaccines once they are developed. The initial aim is to have 2 billion doses available by the end of 2021, which should be enough to protect high risk and vulnerable people, as well as frontline healthcare workeRs

Which channel was the report on?

I've known for a while that Brazil is a cautionary tale but it's rarely reported in the UK media as far as I can tell. The lockdown sceptics keep on about herd immunity even though parts of Brazil had 70% of the population with antibodies from the first wave and it didn't stop a second wave. The amount of deaths we'd need to accept to get to more than that would cause far more economic and social devastation than lockdown.

It is awful over there I really feel for the people.

IloveJKRowling · 02/04/2021 10:03

And yes, the logistics of vaccination is important - it's not just about having the doses you need the infrastructure and workforce to administer them.

At least the UK has done very well in this regard (well done NHS and army).

Unsure33 · 02/04/2021 10:06

It was a report on the field hospitals . On one of the main news channels .I think because they had hit the highest deaths per day .

The average age for hospitalisation was young . Something like 37 -56 ?

It’s all the logistics of burials as well because I guess this is mainly happening in the large densely populated cities ?

even though parts of Brazil had 70% of the population with antibodies from the first wave

I’ve seen reports that these figures methodology was wrong, whether because of incorrect presumptions (that were widely believed at the time) like prevalence of asymptomatic spread or other factors I’m not sure. I believe they were also widely reported as fact before sufficient peer reviews had taken place.

I doubt these figures would have been scrutinised much publicly if we hadn’t seen such a large second/third wave.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 02/04/2021 10:12

Brazil looks terrible, and the dickhead leading then tells them to stop whining about a ‘little flu’ He should be charged with genocide.

Lockdown sceptics used to be so keen on quoting Sweden. They never mention Brazil.

BluebellsGreenbells · 02/04/2021 10:13

I don’t know if it was just the reporting but most of those beds appeared to be males.

Not all looked overweight

It’s a crying shame, there’s no financial support at all, crude burials, taking place 24 hours a day, they can’t dig them fast enough.

Cornettoninja · 02/04/2021 10:15

I know there’s ‘history’ between MN and Reddit but I hope they allow this link. It’s a really interesting thread on the situation in Brazil with some contributions from people actually there...

I agree with the person on Reddit who said it is a humanitarian disaster. The UN need to go in.

And also it’s a breeding ground for variants.

lightand · 02/04/2021 10:28

Brazil has a very high obesity rate?

Where do you get that idea from?
Not from what I have seen.
And they are more than halfway down this league table.
[having trouble getting the link, I will persevere]

Uk is far worse

By all means, try and be healthier and lose weight though.

From what I know, it is not at a UN level yet.[didnt see the report].

It might have been if they had a high level of older people. Which I dont think they do.

The covid problem in Brazil is somewhat ebbing and flowing, but it has remained high.

lightand · 02/04/2021 10:42

world obesity table link
I dont know where various posters are getting the idea about a Brazil obesity problem from.

It will be lower. Average of death is 75. [in world league table terms, they are about 50th in the world]. So not that great. In the part of Brazil I went to[non coastal], I barely saw anyone over 60. Most odd.
Heathermary1995 · 02/04/2021 10:52

Again this thread shows the utter brainwashing done by main stream media.. people do realise that the number of deaths per person is lower than that in the UK? Presumably not

Deaths per million in brazil 1523
Deaths per million in UK 1860

Dont let that get in the way of another preaching thread though

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 02/04/2021 10:55

I don’t think I saw the report you are talking about, but I did see a clip about the burial teams they had working through the night. It’s horrific.

@Heathermary1995 preaching? Where? I see concern. What an odd view on events.

Also I wouldn’t put too much faith in numbers reported at the moment, there are a lot of countries who’ve figures have been called into question. Brazil almost certainly isn’t testing as widely as they need to be for instance.

BlackCatShadow · 02/04/2021 11:13

There absolutely has been a link between countries with high levels of obesity and a higher death rate. Some countries with high obesity have had very strict lockdowns, such as New Zealand and Australia, and this has enabled them to keep their death rate low, but countries with high levels of obesity and less strict anti-covid measures have a very high death rate, such as the UK, the US and Brazil. Some countries with a less strict lockdown, but a much lower obesity rate have a low death rate, such as Japan. It's a combination of the 2 factors. brazil does have a high level of overweight and obese people. I think now, over 60% of Brazilian adults are overweight with around 20% classified as obese. I'm not fat-shaming. I'm just saying there has been a link with countries with over 50% of the population overweight have 10 times the death rate. It's shocking really.

The Op is berating the "lockdowns are inhuman " stance ( which they are) talking about a country that has a lower death rate than the Uk pretending they are all dropping like flies again because of a few pictures. People should study the actual death rates rather than read this rubbish.. the average age of death in Brazil is lower than the UK because the average life expectancy is lower- hardly rocket science is it in a population that has 214 million people
