Just interested to see what people's feelings are given the latest news on AZ from Canada and Germany.

So, as the title says..

If you were offered the AZ vaccine tomorrow would you take it?

@Frequentflier I dont know what Canada will do. I would guess they will approve but dont have access to the information they do. I would be wary of looking at statistics such as jabs given vs clots, there are far more factors to consider such as family history, other condions they may had, other medications they may have been taking.
But on the basis if what I have observed, I would take the AZ vaccine tomorrow IF offered (I am 47 and have asthma).

Circumlocutious · 31/03/2021 08:30

@RedcurrantPuff

People who are saying they aren’t having it because people have had blood clots - I’m interested in the thought process.

There has been something like 31 blood clots out of 2.7 million jabs - so say just under 1 in 100000. And no link established to the jab

Even in the youngest and healthiest people the risk of serious illness or death from Covid is higher than this.

Yes, that's the data in Germany. 1.1 will get a blood clot in 100,000.

The risk of dying from a brain aneurism is 4 in 100,000. The risk of dying from childbirth in the UK is 1 in 10,000 pregnancies.

But, the regulatory agency still clearly considers a risk of 1 in 100,000 to be too high.

doireallyneedaname · 31/03/2021 08:31

No. I think it’s naive that we are relentlessly defending it despite multiple reports of a RARE blood clotting disorder post vaccination which wouldn’t ordinarily be seen in young, healthy people.

I agree with the countries that are administering to over 60’s or pausing until it has been investigated.

Frequentflier · 31/03/2021 08:31

@ToomuchYarn Thank you. That is v reassuring.

RedcurrantPuff · 31/03/2021 08:48

But, the regulatory agency still clearly considers a risk of 1 in 100,000 to be too high.

But why though. That’s what I don’t get. Stick it on the vaccine insert and let people have the choice. How many of us have been on the pill with proven risk of blood clots?

stayathomer · 31/03/2021 08:49

Yes yes yes!!(gimmeGrin)

RedcurrantPuff · 31/03/2021 08:54

Are the people in Germany getting the vaccine just now all young and healthy?

Why is that? Why are they vaccinating young and healthy people just now?

I don’t relentlessly defend the AZ vaccine but I trust the U.K. regulator more than the governments of the countries fucking up their rollouts and looking to deflect attention. They can blame AZ rather than themselves whilst not impacting profits of the other pharma companies producing vaccines.

Even the Italian and Polish regulators said the bans on AZ were political

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 31/03/2021 09:00

Yes I would. I'm 46, overweight and on the pill but the gains far outweigh the risks for me.

carolinesbaby · 31/03/2021 09:03

Yes. No hesitation.

GrapeLipBalm · 31/03/2021 09:03

The Telegraph said last night it's not political, which surprised me as they are usually rabidly anti EU. This article seems balanced though. www.google.com/amp/s/www.telegraph.co.uk/global-health/science-and-disease/britain-could-rough-ride-oxford-astrazeneca-jab-no-need-panic/amp/

Velouria · 31/03/2021 09:04

Nopety nope nope nope no.

GrapeLipBalm · 31/03/2021 09:04

In answer to the question though. Yes, I had AZ a couple of weeks ago and would again as my risk of covid is much higher than the rare platelet reaction

Velouria · 31/03/2021 09:08

I felt weird, after the hep B vaccine, didn't go back for the second.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 31/03/2021 09:18

A report from one institute in Germany came up with 1 in 100,000

However the WHO data is 1 in a million. In the U.K. there were 5 cases in 11 million people vaccinated and the MHRA doesn't think that is different to the background rate.

Either way both of those are orders of magnitude rarer than the risk of a serious complication from Covid.

It's still clearly safer to be vaccinated than not to be vaccinated even if the German figures are more accurate

The real question is whether it would be best to use other vaccines in younger people to avoid this very tiny risk but you can only do that if you have enough which Canada clearly do.

The Canadian authorities are not saying the AZ vaccine is not safe or even not safe for a particular age group they are just saying that it would be even safer to use Pfizer or Moderna so they are doing that.

drpet49 · 31/03/2021 09:20

Yes I would

Sirzy · 31/03/2021 09:22

Yes I have had my first dose and will be having my second next month when it’s due

Great post @CovoidOfAllHumanity

I'm going to repeat this bit because it's really important

Either way both of those are orders of magnitude rarer than the risk of a serious complication from Covid. It's still clearly safer to be vaccinated than not to be vaccinated even if the German figures are more accurate

I'm desperate to have my vaccine for this reason.

NickMarlow · 31/03/2021 10:03

Yes I did - text invite last night, vaccine this morning. Didnt know which it would be until I got there, turned out to be AstraZeneca.

Dowser · 31/03/2021 10:10

No.
I’ve got dermatitis . Something I’ve never really suffered from and then I got bitten last week. Tiny thing yet you should’ve seen the size of the swelling and redness around it.
I also have gut problems.
I need to heal what’s going on first.
I darent have something that might inflame my body even more. I’ve got enough to cope with right now.

DarceyDashwood · 31/03/2021 10:18

Yes - although I had it two weeks ago so a bit late to change my mind! I am a natural
worrier so will admittedly be relieved when I get to day 20. I’d get my second jab - early 40s. I really don’t want to risk Covid/long Covid.

HarrietOh · 31/03/2021 10:20

As someone who is early 30s, I am wondering if by the time people get to my age group they won't bother. The chances of me getting seriously ill from COVID are almost zero (I've had it and only had a headache, other friends who have had it also experienced similar) - so the only reason we'd be getting it is to benefit society... which is different from taking other medication such as the pill and agreeing to potential side effects.

stayathomer · 31/03/2021 10:38

HarrietOh
The only thing is then you'll face restrictions, I dont think many countries will let unvaccinated people in easily for some time to come

Heathermary1995 · 31/03/2021 10:40

Definitely not

HarrietOh · 31/03/2021 10:49

No I agree, and I've always wanted to have the vaccine, I'm just wondering if people in younger age groups might start feeling more wary. As ultimately, we aren't having this to protect ourselves.
