I just can't imagine what a win win situation is for the UK

To be fair, the current situation is pretty win-win for us. We look like pragmatists who are getting on with successfully vaccinating their populace, the EU look like head cases.

Umbivalent · 24/03/2021 19:49

Anyway, I do hope it all blows over as the EU begin to understand the law of unintended consequences.

Ineverdidmind · 24/03/2021 19:51

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously

"The UK hasn't actually behaved badly. The govt has heavily invested in a not for profit vaccine which is being shared with the world. The UK has helped develop supply lines here and in the EU. It has continued to supply the Pfizer components.
I've been really critical of our government over do much of their handling of this pandemic, but I honestly think they've done a really good job with vaccine investment and procurement. All I'm seeing from the EU is trying to screw the price down on a not for profit vaccine and constant carping because of the contract they signed.
The UK is allowed to feel proud of our roll out - our scientists and NHS and the team who procured our supplies have done a cracking job"

👏👏👏👏👏 Well said.

ginghamstarfish · 24/03/2021 19:51

What, the vaccine that they have completely slagged off, causing the public in some countries to refuse it?

Itsalonghaul · 24/03/2021 19:55

I would be happy to share my vaccine as a forty something if they thought they would use them!

JamesAnderson · 24/03/2021 20:01

@MRex it wouldn't surprise me if we were in talks with Pfizer.

Motorina · 24/03/2021 20:09

David Lawrence, CFO of Valneva, was on Today on Radio 4 this morning. A minute or two after half seven, if anyone wants to listen to it.

He said they were going to report their first clinical data in the next couple of weeks, and anticipate submitting for approval in the autumn, by which time they will have vaccine doses available and ready to go. He anticipated no issues in adapting the vaccine for variants. The UK is at the front of the line for this.

He also said, "We have one key component we import from the United States" but they didn't anticipate issues. And "In the UK I suspect the Government would want us to complete the fill/finish in the UK, rather than our plant in Sweden. And that may cost a bit more. But if that's what the government require then obviously we'd sit round the table with them and work out a way to do that. And I think that's unfortunately where that might head."

So that's potentially one business lost from an EU country already. Well done, UvdL.

Umbivalent · 24/03/2021 20:16

Interesting, @Motorina.

I do think that the law of unintended consequences is beginning to bite the EU on the arse. I wonder what kind of fudge they will come up with tomorrow. Even they will have to see that this will have myriad ramifications, none of them nice?

Really interesting I expect yes government will be willing pay more to be bottled in the UK. A French/ Swedish firm made and bottled in the UK
The news about varients postive and I guess will be for booster shots as we would have fully vaccinated all non kids by then. The EU haven't even bothered signing contracts with valneva / norovax. both aiming start manufacturing in the UK late autumn

I also imagine any 2nd generation booster vaccines from AZ will be different contracts and one the company won't seek with EU.
I imagine as soon as they can complete EU contract they will pull out of manufacturing in Europe.
I don't know what other vaccine companies will set up next.
In time Canada and Australia be making their own so less reliant on Europe for supply.

Umbivalent · 24/03/2021 20:29

Yes I agree @3asAbird, other countries will see that you can't rely on the EU to let the vaccines out, so will divert their reliance to more trustworthy jurisdictions.

Louisianna16 · 24/03/2021 21:04

@StarCat2020

UK's was using British Law Sorry to be a pedant but it is English Law (there is no such thing as British Law)
Not at all, thanks for the clarification!
Jaxhog · 24/03/2021 21:10

Looks like the EU wants to stockpile more AZ vaccines until they go out of date too. Their arrogance and lack of humanity are truly breathtaking.

Doomsdayiscoming · 24/03/2021 21:22

All I see is EU hate?

Nothing for India?

StarCat2020 · 24/03/2021 21:23

Anytime!

Baileysforchristmas · 24/03/2021 21:34

No India haven’t started raiding vaccine sites with armed police, the EU has lost its mind with revenge and spite

@Doomsdayiscoming looks like india may deliver soon and its nit comparable as different contracts , plus maybe just maybe the uk is talking to india and engaging .
As it seems the uk and eu are now as they have issued a statement tonight to say so

India were never meant to supply the European or UK supply chains. They haven't actively slated the az vaccines decreasing peoples confidences in it. If they had any business disputes its all been in private. They are a large country and population without moaning they hard done by . They have rising cases too. The majority vote vaccines they produce will go to poorer countries.

I'm wondering if behind the scenes Pfizer are kicking off.
Theres a penalty clause within the az uk contract so its not beyond the realms that the UK pfizer contact is fairly similar.
I imagine Pfizer and Moderna are keen not to get caught up with EU feud with Astra zeneca.
I wonder if they have contingency plans as EU look increasingly unhinged by the day.

We are due 17million moderna
Around 20million Pfizer
30million Janson.

MRex · 24/03/2021 22:03

We ordered 40m Pfizer, so 30m due to come, no?

To the question above - India has put in a limited pause on exports for a brief period after poor yields, it looks fair.

3asAbird · 24/03/2021 22:10

Yes we had 10.9 million of it so far. I'm hoping UK put aside 2nd doses. I don't know the average delivery size and frequency I guess in theory we received maybe 10million per quarter so maybe 3 million a month im just summising.

Pfizer and Moderna are the most expensive.
10million Moderna meant be arriving in UK soon.

MRex · 24/03/2021 22:13

The UK didn't put aside Pfizer second doses, the EU have been clear we received 10m vaccines and that's around what we used if you look at the yellow card reporting figures of 10.9m first doses.

StarCat2020 · 24/03/2021 22:35

Do you have a link for that because that is worrying.

MRex · 24/03/2021 22:41

It's in all the news, the quote that over 10 m vaccine doses produced in the EU have been sent to the UK. If the number was 20m, it would have been mentioned.

It shouldn't be an issue because the next tranche of Pfizer doses are ready, as long as EC aren't dicks.

I thought of another possible win-win; we take all their doses that are going out of date and they get the 5m from India next month, plus however many from the UK to have fresh supply when they're ready to use it.

StarCat2020 · 24/03/2021 22:44

I meant about no Pfizer being set aside for second doses but actually I am a twat because (like you say) it is obvious.

10m received - 10m used = 0m saved

Cheers MRex

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2021 22:46

So we really do need those Pfizer this month?

I assume we’re ok given U.K. hasn’t gone nuclear and issued statement today

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2021 22:46

I mean issued the one they did
