@Boph

I wonder how pfizers exports to Israel will stand? Are they getting supplies from EU
They are re-looking at previous exemptions to their export bans inc:

Albania, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Iceland, Lebanon, Libya, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, North Macedonia, Serbia and Switzerland.

We have been discussing what more we can do to ensure a reciprocally beneficial relationship between the UK and EU on Covid-19

Yes we still have the thumbscrews out on the UK in the name of reciprocality.

Given our interdependencies, we are working on specific steps we can take - in the short-, medium- and long term - to create a win-win situation and expand vaccine supply for all our citizens

We don't want to look like the law breaking bullies that we are.

In the end, openness and global cooperation of all countries will be key to finally overcome this pandemic and ensure better preparation for meeting future challenges

We will need the UK for many more years to come, so best not break too many bones all at once. Lets call it co operation.

We will continue our discussions

The export ban has not gone away.

Boph · 24/03/2021 18:51

Pfizer getting a huge payback in data from Israel, that would go down badly.

StarCat2020 · 24/03/2021 18:53

@Itsalonghaul
I like you

FourTeaFallOut · 24/03/2021 18:57

Pfizer is doing a lot of heavy lifting for az at this point. It seems they are the only vaccine producer to point out that they produced a product in one economic landscape that simply won't wash in this new one being cobbled together on the fly.

Baileysforchristmas · 24/03/2021 18:59

What the whole thing highlights is how unhinged the EU is without the UK, we only left in January.

star Thank you! We are feeling the fuzzy love tonight with such kind words coming out of the EU.
It was only a few hours ago when Merkel released a statement saying the ban was going ahead.

Tonight we are all friends again apparently.

What do you think tomorrow will bring? Will there even be any vaccines production sites left in the EU, or just smoking mass of rubble do we think?

Excellent interpretation.

Ita very vague and one sided.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/56483766

This is good informative article over who invested what and what contracts are.
There are penalties for az if they fail to deliver to UK.
Also eu seemed waive that right legal recourse.
Channel 4 news covering it now.

We have ordered 40million pfizer and received just over 10.
10million moderna which in not sure if coming from USA or Europe

Janson I assume made Switzerland but bottled in the Netherlands.
That the Dutch az plant is shared facility.
Eu already said uk is getting nothing from that factory and rejected idea of splitting it

On a random note why has Germany called a strict 5day Easter lockdown then cancelled it

Will Boris be present at this virtual meeting tomorrow if Biden is allowed to attend?

JamesAnderson · 24/03/2021 19:14

What do you think tomorrow will bring?

An announcement there are another 2 vaccine factories being set up in the UKGrin

JamesAnderson · 24/03/2021 19:17

10 million moderna which in not sure if coming from USA or Europe

Someone on the other thread who was in the US seemed to think Biden had authorised the export of Moderna vaccines to the UK in April

feellikeanalien · 24/03/2021 19:17

Considering Ursula von der Leyen's reputation as German defence minister I'm not exactly surprised that she seems to be at the centre of this.

I think we now have a pretty good idea of what our trading relationship with the EU post Brexit is going to look like whilst she is in charge!

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2021 19:19

The statement doesn’t give much but that it exists with soothing statements is something in itself

Looks like U.K. are being very co operative. So unlike the pp who claimed we had been ‘as bad as the EU’

MRex · 24/03/2021 19:22

That would be the most awesome result!
MRex · 24/03/2021 19:31

Realistically, what the EU need are planning input from Kate Bingham's team, logistics input from the army, messaging input from the NHS and greater support for the EMA (including moving to greater dose gap). All of that can probably be offered and provided without too much impact on the UK programme by this point.
(Also maybe we offer to take doses that are nearer their end date, as we know we can jab so much faster.)

BoKatan · 24/03/2021 19:33

Most European countries have had fairly lax lockdown measures over the winter, with bars, shops open, people allowed to socialise etc.

Now they are in the midst of a bad wave, it feels like we are getting the blame. They didn't impose harsher measures when they needed to and now trying to hamper our vaccination progress in order to make up for their errors.

We paid a huge price to get our numbers right down, one that EU countries were not willing to pay, and seemingly are still unwilling given the u-turns in Germany.

I voted remain and even helped on the campaign trail. Not sure I would now.

3asAbird · 24/03/2021 19:35

I can't say I feel reassured.

What Europe need how are vaccines
India has temp ban so they won't be coming from there.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-india-56513371

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-9396643/EU-standoff-Britian-vaccines-escalates.html

The 2 uk sites az only produce 2million per week.
We already sent teams to both factories in eu to help boost production.
We keeping to contract on delivery raw materials to pfizer.

I just can't imagine what a win win situation is for the UK.
If we give 2 million az and swop for 2 million pfizer they still have same net amount of vaccines.
They would probably prefer to confiscate pfzier and moderna as that's what they prefer.

The export ban which is not a export ban will be on case by case basis and decided on whatever arbitratry rules and criteria the EU decides.

MarshaBradyo · 24/03/2021 19:36

I just can't imagine what a win win situation is for the UK.

Me either so far

DonnaDonna01 · 24/03/2021 19:37

I’m no expert but to me it looks like the EU were firstly insulted we left them (not saying this was right or wrong that’s a different discussion) Then on a worldwide stage the UK has done a brilliant job of the vaccine rollout. (I’m no Boris or his government fan and I can make a very long list of things they may have got wrong but I’ll give them the vaccine rollout) The EU have not managed the vaccine rollout very well at all, so they’ve got their dummy and well and truly throw it out of the pram. Instead of putting their energy into improving their supply they want to start a slugging match with us because they look bad.

StarCat2020 · 24/03/2021 19:40

I think that it is shocking for any state to attempt to claim ownership of private company's property, especially in this global market.

Who would want invest in something that wasn't secure from being comandeered?

I like how you see though the BS in your "decoding" of the statement above.

StormzyinaTCup · 24/03/2021 19:42

The export ban which is not a export ban will be on case by case basis and decided on whatever arbitratry rules and criteria the EU decides.

I have stolen this comment from another site (BBC I think) - it gave me a giggle so thought I’d share:

EU Rules on Vaccine Export Control.

1. The country must not be an Island
2. U and K must not be in their name
3. They must not have left the EU in the last 2 years

Baileysforchristmas · 24/03/2021 19:42

@MRex that is exactly what the EU need and what i’ve said from the beginning, especially vaccines with only a couple weeks shelf life, we would have it in arms so quickly.

Baileysforchristmas · 24/03/2021 19:44

I think I can, we just keep talking - running down the clock and keep vaccinating. Of course by the time we get there in typical EU style, we will have the adult population vaccinated.

There is a good reason why they are vaccinating like the clappers !

FourTeaFallOut · 24/03/2021 19:48

We have the VMIC centre scheduled for completion by October which should be able to fire out 70m vaccines in 6 months - so that comfortably doubles the weekly vaccine output in this country. Four days ago there was a gov press release to say they have granted an addition £47m to 'support and accelerate' the project. So maybe we will be able to keep this on target and be less hamstrung by this politicking by next winter?
