You forgot self serving!

I think the 'evil' part refers to the prolonged undermining of a philanthropic effort to get easy to use vaccine out to the poorest of countries.

There has certainly been some very self centered bluster, lacking in any diplomacy or critical thinking.

MRex · 28/03/2021 15:52

@Wakeupin2022

And I don't think the behaviour of some in the EU has been evil.

Panicked, irrational, delusional, entitled yes. Evil, no.

Yes, that's a more accurate description.

In order I'd go with irrational, arse-covering, panicked and delusional.
Entitled, yes, but they did have an entitlement and I think it's the panic effect more than the arrogance that might be associated with entitlement.

The EU are still talking as if they are going to block the UK’s vaccines, they will not let it go until they stop the UK’s vaccine rollout, Unbelievable 😡

France’s vaccination rollout will have caught up with the UK’s “in a few weeks”, President Emmanuel Macron has said amid tensions over vaccine supplies.

At present, 11.45% of French people have received at least one vaccine, compared with 43.79% of Britons.

However, Macron told Le Journal du Dimanche that France had significantly stepped up the pace of its vaccine drive and said the UK’s rollout would slow down soon.

“In a few weeks we will have completely caught up with the British, who will meanwhile be increasingly dependent on us to vaccinate their population,” he said, referring to AstraZeneca supplies produced in the EU.

Under 41% of French adults in every survey so far have said they are willing to be vaccinated. In a few weeks he'd need to have everyone jabbed who's willing, plus have converted a few more. It'll be absolutely fantastic if they manage it; brilliant for France and for the world, but it is a fantasy.

EasterIssland · 28/03/2021 16:40

The difference is that the uk is not as anti vax country as France (it’s always been). So he might find that people might not want their vaccines.

Spain is also announcing that70% by this summer as they’re getting quite a few vaccines. 55–65 are being called in coming weeks for az. And also j&j is going to get delivered in coming weeks. They think everyone over 80 will be vaccinated in coming weeks ... however my 80 relatives are still waiting for the call.... at least they’re not getting in confrontation with the uk and are trying to vaccinate their people without causing any political damage (don’t think Spain is in the position to cause problems to the uk taking into account British is their biggest tourism and summer is around the corner)

Im fed up of France and I’ll def not be visiting it for a while.

Imfedupwithallofthis · 28/03/2021 16:41

Unbelievable, Baileys.

I'm glad in some ways that he is considering this to be a race, might mean not only do France and Europe get on a bit quicker, but also the rest of the world will get vaccines quicker as well.
Smile

PronounssheRa · 28/03/2021 16:44

It's a distraction from Macron, covid rates in France are starting to look very scary. Its easy to continue to criticise the UK, more difficult to tackle what is going on in France.

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/03/2021 16:45

Maybe he’s going to achieve it by appealing to their anti British feeling. Get a jab and beat the rosbifs!

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/03/2021 16:56

Who is this 'us' Macron refers to? The EU, as an organisation, isn't producing anything.
I really do think we are at the point where the UK govt needs to issue a rebuttal to some of the more outrageous statements coming from EU leaders.
I think we just have to focus on increasing capacity in our own supply chains so that we are not at all reliant on the EU for anything.

MRex · 28/03/2021 16:59

Anything is quite a big ask! Time to invest in vertical farms...

Wakeupin2022 · 28/03/2021 17:10

I don't really pay much attention to Macron.

He is obsessed with the British and can't resist an opportunity to have a dig.

ScribblingPixie · 28/03/2021 17:19

I said little short of evil, not evil, so down a notch or two. Having said that, I do think that deliberately undermining a vaccine, so reducing take-up & doubtless causing deaths in doing so is wickedly immoral, which is the definition of evil - so I'll stand by it!

MuddlingMackem · 28/03/2021 17:28

Quite honestly, right now, whatever works is fine by me!

That vaccine hesitancy in some countries is very worrying.

Oh dear does sound hit like veiled in the know threat like he has all the power. As far as I know no vaccines that are currently available as in authorised are manufactured or bottled in France 🇫🇷 so actually we maybe small island but in terms of pharmaceutical, genome testing and vaccines we way ahead. Is he going to persuade his mate in Italy blocked more az. Mark rutte from Netherlands is reluctant to block as is Belgian pm to issue export ban themselves.

We shouldn't give sad little man on a power trip trying to deflect from his own political failings.

Great to hear Spain just getting on with it.
They maybe in stronger position than France and Germany at this rate.
Doesn't it take 3 weeks get coverage from just 1st shot so vaccines won't help France much with current 3rd wave.
Feel sorry for the French having some a reckless power hungry leader.
I do hope we share with Ireland as soon as we possibly can.

I have a feeling more shit will hit the fan next week or coming weeks as things get worse and they lash out.

Sanofi (French) are going to produce some of the Pfizer vaccine starting from thus summer (125 million doses)

FourTeaFallOut · 28/03/2021 18:13

Good. They've been taking about that since January - hopefully it will hit the ground running.

I bet it be late summer
And they have late deliveries and yeild issues.
Looks like Sanofi itself probably won't be available until 2022.
So currently France produces nothing
Bottles nothing
Macron can't block

Germany and Belgium can block pfizer
Spain could block moderna
Italy and Belgium/ Netherlands can block az.

LimitIsUp · 28/03/2021 18:16

Sorry if this has been covered - but with some filling and finishing of the Moderna jab taking place in the EU could it be blocked from getting to us?

BigWoollyJumpers · 28/03/2021 18:16

@UserEleventyNine

In Lower Saxony, authorities used post office records to seek out candidates for the first round of jabs, guessing people’s ages on the basis of their first names Shock

Don't the efficient Germans have records of people who are in receipt of Old Age Pensions? Or Bus Passes?

Germany has no digitisation of medical records. None. I was gobsmacked when my german friend told me that. They have also struggled with remote working and learning, they just aren't technical on a personal level. Industry yes, personal or medical no.

Unlikely that Spain will block Moderna though since it is wholly a US vaccine? Can't imagine that will go down well with the US government

TheCountessofFitzdotterel · 28/03/2021 18:23

I think it’s being manufactured in Switzerland. Surely they wouldn’t send the doses to be bottled if they thought the Spanish would swipe it?

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 28/03/2021 18:30

I think that if the EU really do start blocking Pfizer, them the UK really will have to insist on those shipments being released before we agree to send the Pfizer components from the UK. I really hope it doesn't get to that, but I don't see how the UK could let that stand and not do anything to protect us.

MissConductUS · 28/03/2021 18:35

It is being manufactured in Switzerland, not Spain, by a contracted manufacturer (Lonza?).

I rather doubt that the EU has the balls political will to block it from going from Switzerland to the UK, and if they did Moderna might get approval to ship it from here. We really seem to be in way better shape in terms of supply than we anticipated.

Baileysforchristmas · 28/03/2021 19:11

EU DOUBLE-DOWN ON VACCINE EXPORT BAN LANGUAGE: Internal Market Commissioner Thierry Breton today repeated the warning that the EU will block exports of AstraZeneca vaccines if the company fails to deliver doses on time. “As long as AstraZeneca doesn’t make good on its obligations, everything that’s produced on European soil is distributed to Europeans,” Breton, who heads the EU executive’s vaccine task force, said on RTL radio, as reported by Bloomberg. “If there are surpluses, they will go elsewhere,” he added.
