If the majority of the manufacturing has occured in the EU, how can we possibly be reciprocal
Also what would be the point in "swapping" vaccines?

Yes I wonder about this
MaMaLa321 · 25/03/2021 14:46

Yes, words fail me. That the EU is trying to spin it this way, and that people are accepting it, is unbelievable
@3asAbird I'm South Wales Valleys.

DM, DSF plus 4 of my Aunts/Uncles ( all 76 - 79 age group) were done in Newport Centre - all Pfizer. 4 NHS family members were done in Cwmbran - all Pzifer. They've all had second dose 3/4 weeks ago, approx 5-6 weeks after 1st dose.

PIL were the first people I knew to be vaccinated - they were done at GPs as 80+ and had AZ, no second dose yet, but due within the next week I believe.
My dads early 70s underlying health conditions so maybe done bit earlier than his age group.
Not sure where he had his jab maybe his gps in pontypool some weird reason he refused move gps so lies and says he lives at his sisters address

Mum and new husband market town near the brecon beacons also done at gps but think my mams older freind had travel to Newport.
My mams constantly telling me how well Wales are doing
My dads convinced hardly any pfizer used in Wales and angry with EU .
Upset him on fb by slagging off cwmbran because jokingly when Boris said in parliament when he visited vaccination Centre in cwmbran that it was wonderful to be there and said hes blatantly lying nowSmile.
My mams going slowly more mad then than usual some reason loves Boris and non essential retail not opening has upset her.

I am Bristol we have 2 different trusts here that cover the whole city and weston.
So Welsh health board seems massive compared to English trusts in terms of coverage.
Dads been in and out of hospital last few years and prefers the heath to the gwent.
Not sure when I'm allowed officially visit them as I said to dad rather they both had their jabs and my husband enjoying the break.
We 40 to 50s age group and not even had 1st vaccination..
Not sure when we be allowed to Wales so confusing with different rules.

I might have got the wrong end of the stick but are you saying that your DH is enjoying the break from your parents?

nonono1 · 25/03/2021 15:13

How are they going to explain to their citizens who have already been through enough, no more pjizer will be available as the Yorkshire plant has stopped supplying raw materials?

The EU probably know we won’t do that because they know Boris will just give in, like he has with the offer to share our vaccines with them.

On the second doses issue - perhaps we have enough vaccine stockpiled in the UK for second doses already?

EasterIssland · 25/03/2021 15:19

@3asAbird hello from bristol ;)
It would be funny if it wasn’t such a serious situation. Apologies it’s from the DM, but basically Macron is praising the US efforts - and therefore, by omission, confirming his ire at the UK for our vaccine efforts. He’s a prize twat for sure!

if Boris doesn't do something if the uk doesnt get the vaccines they've paid for, then the citizens or other politicians will complain to boris, so he can't just say shit happens, I don't think sharing is a bad idea if it unblocks the current scenario of export bans, we might not get 10m this month but it's more than 0.

No i think he's part joking. Before pandemic we only saw them every other month . We never relied on for childcare. Easter and Xmas are the main times I missed them. The different rules despite short travel distances been tough. I don't want risk seeing them until both them and their partners had 2nd doses. Main regret meeting niece just once and shes nearly 1. Different rules are bonkers we had non essential supermarket aisle here its always felt less strict in England. The one thing that's drove me bonkers is the increased nationalism. I am Welsh I live in England. Wales has had high rates and the disaster that was 2 week circuit break and what came after is on drakeford. Mams like wales is doing so well with jabs and that I remind her is because they part of UK . I anticipate we will see them in the summer. My cousin have moved to England and France. I just hope we can all meet Xmas 2021 as I have large extended family.

Exactly this. We might as well all just keep our own. And, as a PP remarked earlier, does that mean if a country has no manufacturing capability it should never get any vaccines?
StarCat2020 · 25/03/2021 15:38

@3asAbird
It made me laugh when I read that about your DH

StarCat2020 · 25/03/2021 15:40

OK found out where to get details of vaccines delivered by brand but a week or so behind -

As of 14 March, an estimated 10.9 million first doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine and 13.7 million doses of the Oxford University/AstraZeneca vaccine, had been administered, and around 1.3 million second doses, mostly the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine, had been administered.

He's probably gone there to find some adults to talk to. He won't find any by phoning Brussels, that's for sure.

Boph I'd be quite happy for her to have AZ as a second dose. I'm confident in both vaccines, no serious side effects even in our very poorly children.

Baileysforchristmas · 25/03/2021 17:06

Hmm 🤔 I wonder why Novavax are reluctant to sign a deal with the EU.

EU vaccine campaign further hampered by Novavax delay

Novavax is delaying signing a contract to supply its Covid-19 vaccine to the EU, according to a bloc official involved in the talks, as the US biotech company warned it was struggling to source some raw materials.

Reuters has the story:

Prolonging the talks might further complicate the EU’s vaccination plans as the bloc had planned to sign a deal early this year for at least 100 million doses of Novavax’s vaccine, with an option for another 100 million.

The EU official, who asked not to named as the talks are confidential, said the company had postponed signing a deal for weeks, citing legal issues in meetings with the bloc’s vaccine negotiators.

“They are slowing down the process of finishing the contract,” the official, who attended the meetings, told Reuters.

Informally, a Novavax executive had said a slow pace in negotiations was warranted because the company was having production problems, the EU official said.

A Novavax spokeswoman said the company was working “through some pandemic-related raw materials supply shortages”, without giving details.

The com-COV trial mixing Pfizer and AZ is due to report its first findings in June I believe. I’m in the trial and have already received my 2 mystery doses.

StarCat2020 · 25/03/2021 17:10

Surely if the company are struggling to source raw ingredients then it makes sense not to seal the deal with another buyer?

ChloeCrocodile · 25/03/2021 17:46

Yep - not signing a deal until you are confident you can meet demand is usually an excellent plan. However, given that the product is hugely in demand there is a massive list of potential buyers, the company can choose who to make deals with, and when to make them. A buyer who is willing to help you source the stuff you need and also accept “best efforts” is likely to get a deal (and therefore their vaccines) sooner. A buyer who will drag your name through the mud has to wait until everything is fully up and running before even getting a deal and possibly pay more too. Not good for the EU, and not good for the UK as we will be impacted by vaccine delays in the EU.

Motorina · 25/03/2021 17:55

I'm not sure if this is the right thread for this or not. One of the ongoing criticisms of the UK vaccine rollout has been 'The UK has done loads of vaccines, but is miles behind EU countries in properly vaccinating people.'

According to Our World in Data, the UK has just now overtaken France on that metric, and it on course to overtake the EU within the next couple of days.

There's a two day lag on UK figures on that site, so we're probably there already.

It seems the problem is with the factory in the EU which isn't producing sufficient volumes.

Novavax could have signed a best endeavours contract but what company would want to do that with the EU at the moment.

I expect in time the UK will agree to share supply, but it would be political suicide to do this until we are further into our vaccine rollout.
