Along with any other unnecessary travel abroad.

OP posts:

The rule is not fairly applied. The rich and those who own second homes can still travel.

Because the government have fucked it from the start. They kept the borders open all summer so they could have their foreign holidays (and their donors could) and the same at Christmas. They announced the travel ban only days after recess, when MPs and ministers had already trotted off.

Holidays will certainly be allowed this summer because MPs and ministers will want their summer holidays abroad.

Arrowheart · 23/03/2021 18:09

@MaxNormal

Between that and the mandatory vaccines for carers it's all going a bit North Korea. Still, as long as we're all safe.
What a ridiculous thing to say.

Fingers crossed
Not just the MPs
They’ll be representing many many many constituents who want the same as them

We are allowing people into this country without fines.

Confused

It's still possible to enter the UK without having automatically committed an offence.

lifeturnsonadime · 23/03/2021 18:19

I'm not saying I think people should be fined for entering the UK just that if you are going to fine people for leaving ostensibly on the grounds of public health and the risk of a new variant then you would think that, as a bear minimum all those entering the country should be forced to do a hotel quarantine at personal cost (including the second home owners and those who can afford to bear the £5K fine).

AnaofBroceliande · 23/03/2021 18:23

Yeah, because you can't catch covid in pubs or cinemas Hmm.

Don't care about the bloody war. It ended nearly 76 years ago. We don't live in that era anymore.

Srslydontgiveacrap · 23/03/2021 18:59

@CleverCatty

This is you:

"lot of mean, nasty attitudes on here. Can guarantee this won't affect a lot of them so they don't care. Total lack of empathy, brainwashed by Covid, nothing else matters in life anymore."

Totally mean and nasty.

PersimmonTree · 23/03/2021 19:02

Nobody gives a fuck about the 1940s.

We are supposed to have learned and evolved from that time, yet here we are 75 years later with the next generation of toryboy liars telling us what to do 👍 Get a grip yourself and read the whole of the voting slip next time.

Totally agree with you. You will be more likely to spread a virus in this country in one of the places to open as most of the time it's a half hearted approach to the COVID cleanliness rules here! Safer abroad I think!
WouldBeGood · 23/03/2021 19:08

I find it deeply touching that people think the government is interested in their health and protecting them

Just said that this afternoon to a neighbour.

OK, you say "all" - are you suggesting all leisure travellers go into managed quarantine or are you suggesting that absolutely everybody that enters the UK , including those travelling for work reasons, should pay to go into managed (hotel) quarantine on their own dollar?

At the very least the wealth tourists should! Those with the second homes and those who can afford to pay the fine so travel anyway.

If you read my original post on the issue you would have seen that I didn't mention business travel, freight drivers etc would have to be exempt.

What system is in place in Australia and NZ as that seems to have worked?

I'm sick to the teeth of the two tier system that this government has promoted, mainly to ensure that its wealthy donors and voters retain their freedoms.

NeverBeenNormal · 23/03/2021 19:22

@IloveJKRowling

Good, holidays abroad aren't essential in any universe. There is a long list of exceptions of essential travel (including funerals, childcare and many other legitimate reasons to travel).

When so many people are dying it seems a bit much that some people get to spread covid around just so they can get a beach holiday.

Absolutely! The amount of bleating on Facebook because people can't have their usual week on the beach in Spain. For goodness sake! Have a nice week in Norfolk instead. It's not the end of the world - you and your family are in good health, you've got a secure well-paid job and you live in a nice house. Get over it. Grrrrr!
Nelia5 · 23/03/2021 19:23

@MercyBooth we really haven’t. Other countries in Europe have had proper curfews where you are not allowed or leave the house after 10pm. In parts of Germany you currently have to book a time slot to go to the supermarket and you can only go once that day

AnaofBroceliande · 23/03/2021 19:26

Fucking sick of hearing about Australia and NZ, too. We don't live there. They are different places.

Itsalonghaul · 23/03/2021 19:27

So if you are happy to pay the fine, but the offence is an offence so will appear on your record no? Or do I misunderstand that. It is not an on the spot fine that you pay and continue on your way. Not at all.

Wealthy or not, a criminal conviction isn't something anyone is casual about.

You also need proof at the airport, and that proof may be checked directly and indirectly - so actually not as easy as it sounds either.

The UK government have gone out of their way to keep lockdown half hearted. The idea we've had our freedoms taken is ridiculous.

Yes they are and so am I but if we want to consider how closing the borders might work to reduce the risk of the new variant coming in, given that more than 50% of our adult population are now vaccinated, then it is worth comparing what they are doing to what we are doing.

Especially when our borders will remain open to those entering. The fine only works one way!

Wouldn't put me off. It's actually not hard if you've actually looked into it.

Yay! Can't wait to leave. Hoping not to have to come back, though.

lockeddownandcrazy · 23/03/2021 19:29

but a 'reasonable excuse' is to play in a football match. that is whats crazy

Surely you can move abroad?

I love all the self-appointed Covid misery merchants. 'You can't leave! You can just go to Norfolk.'

Nah, don't think so.
