Johnson saying we must prepare for a third wave from Europe

Are we not in the 3rd wave???

It’s a matter of opinion. I’m of the opinion we’ve had two waves, one leading to two lockdowns. The Kent variant blended into our winter wave, that Europe also experienced, whereas now other countries are experiencing waves of the same variant.

The UK second lockdown was wasted when the cabinet insisted on setting a firm date to reopen instead of looking at the actual case numbers. If the Kent variant had been taken seriously at that point (and numbers were clearly rising in the area whilst the rest of the country’s numbers were falling) a whole heap of shit might have been avoided.

You can clearly see on a graph our case numbers dip and then rise rapidly at the beginning of December.

I thought we'd had a 3rd wave!?
SwedishEdith · 22/03/2021 18:41

Think we're in a 3rd lockdown but still only the 2nd wave. Wasn't a 3rd wave always predicted?

HazeyJaneII · 22/03/2021 18:42

No, second wave - third lockdown.

ThroughThickAndThin01 · 22/03/2021 18:43

I also think third lockdown, second wave.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/03/2021 18:44

It’s going down still where I am. And we’re an area with loads of schools (outer London).

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 22/03/2021 18:45

But yes it’s third lockdown, second wave.

ssd · 22/03/2021 18:46

So this is only the 2nd wave?

Shit.

To add - a third wave wouldn’t necessarily lead to another lockdown depending on the effectiveness of the vaccines and whether a variant was able to evade them. Restrictions and social distancing likely to be tightened up but we’ve a good chance complete lockdown could be avoided.

ssd · 22/03/2021 18:46

I actually thought we were on top of the 3rd wave and europe was trailing us....

I'm in Glasgow. Weve had lockdown here forever. And the feckin cases are going up.

Liverpool city region here
Our hospitals have been overwhelmed 3 times with only local then national lockdown bringing cases back down
So I would call it 4th wave

cryh · 22/03/2021 18:51

I agree, we are on our second wave.

The second lockdown was only half a lockdown, really.

I get really upset thinking what could have been, if only we'd lockdown in September, and not been so reckless last summer.

I wish we had had a non-Tory government, the right-wing of the party is such a bunch of numpties and they are dragging the while country the wrong way.

Yes true. We could have extended the first lockdown all summer and in fact probably should have extended it through the winter too- in fact who needs family or friends or shops or restaurants etc. Let’s live like this forever, can’t be reckless after all can we?
Florelei · 22/03/2021 19:01

I’m in the north east. I think we’ve been out of lockdown for maybe 4-5weeks in six months.

It’s utterly rubbish. I don’t think I can cope with another wave like the one we’ve just had.

millenialblush · 22/03/2021 19:04

@cryh what makes you think we wouldn't be in lockdown now if we had locked down In september? Do you think the virus would have just disappeared? We either hide forever or just crack on with our lives and ride the ebs and flows of the virus, like with all other viruses.

Oh grow up. It wouldn't have meant a full lock down over summer but they basically did everything they could to drive cases up, against scientific advice.

We needed:

  • border measures (not closures)
  • test trace isolate
  • caution - not fucking eat out to spread covid about

A bit of moderation might have helped, is all.

The government have been on covid's side tbh.

MercyBooth · 22/03/2021 19:09

YY @millenialblush look at Leicester

This is so unscientific, we no longer live in the middle ages.

You must surely be able to imagine a scenario that if our cases had been half, we might not have ended up unlucky with the Kent variant, then we wouldn't have had such a spike, then the vaccinations would have been working in a far better space.

No one knows but that is why you do the best you can.

Our government ignored science.

BorisJohnsonsleftnipple · 22/03/2021 19:14

There was a slight dip in November, so some people describe it as 2 seperate waves.

Yes. The 2nd wave was early October in Liverpool. So it would be a 4th wave.

They are but only in terms of dealing with a more contagious variant.
nordica · 22/03/2021 19:24

The waves are only waves because of lockdowns and restrictions - the late autumn dip in cases wouldn't have happened naturally. It's hard to know if cases are currently coming down because of the lockdown or how much the vaccines are helping too (they probably are).

Thewiseoneincognito · 22/03/2021 19:31

We’re only just finishing our second wave. You think it’s the third because we’ve had 3 lockdowns. Lockdown 2 only postponed this long one so we could do Christmas shopping etc.

Third wave has already started, our numbers are going back up with the schools reopening. I think a summer lockdown is inevitable to coincide with school holidays. Let’s just say the hopium BoJo&Co are peddling with June restrictions lifting is a pipe dream if schools are to start in September.

notrub · 22/03/2021 19:34

Some confusion here, a wave is simply a period where cases are increasing. If the UK had for example alternated between 2 week lockdowns and complete reopening throughout 2020, we'd be on wave 12 by now!

The UK is closing out wave 2 or wave 3 depending on whether you view the short circuit breaker we had last Autumn as delaying wave 2, or ending it.

Either way it's irrelevant - Europe took a more pro-active approach to controlling the infection at the end of 2020 so they're now on a different cycle, a couple of months behind the UK. If they now go into lockdown, it will be like our January lockdown.

Cherryvalentine · 22/03/2021 19:39

Seriously fuck this, thought this would be the last ever lockdown? Have very elderly relatives abroad I'd like to see again. Can't take anymore.
