The vaccine delay has really knocked me

For background I'm 49 and a lone parent. of course it's good about the amount of vaccines done. But right now, the sudden announcement of the delay last week felt like the final straw somehow for me.

I had already been worried about dcs back at school, but was following the news closely, looking on the vaccine calculator regularly, and -stupidly- told myself it would be in April. Feels like I was hanging on by my fingertips for that.

Since that's been withdrawn I feel so down. Most people I know seem to have got the vaccine now. I'm wondering if for 49s it will even get here in May - if there's a shortage they'll have to prioritise second doses.

I'm surprised how much it's knocked me down. Just totally lacking in hope now, thoroughly fed up, feel depressed. Anyone else get this?

For those who are still waiting, sky news has been reporting tonight that the moderna vaccine will be rolled out for the under-50s in mid-April. Still a bit of a wait, but better than May as originally reported.

500k doses of Moderna according to the Mail so not nearly enough for all the 40s age bracket let alone the 30s though... fingers crossed but I'm not getting my hopes up just yet.

This is really good news and I would love the Moderna one, so holding out hope for that in a few weeks time. Feeling much better about it all and this thread has really helped.

I do think the government should be giving some proper messaging to the under 50s though, and todays announcement that they have enough for 2nd doses of groups 1-9 is another example. They should be giving guidance to everyone else.

I'm not willing to jump the queue and am now avoiding those threads, and trying to watch a bit less news as well, which is helping.

Since the kids are off for the first two weeks of April, mid-April would be good (I know, it takes at least 2 weeks to give any protection, but still).

If they only have 500k doses of Moderna arriving initially I wonder how they will decide who to vaccinate. That amount wouldnt be enough for all the 45 to 49 year olds.

WombatChocolate · 28/03/2021 12:11

Remember that although all of us on here are v keen to get done, as they move down the age groups, enthusiasm for take up wanes. Not all over 45s will be chomping at the bit to get jabbed.

Perhaps they will roll out to a couple of years at a time to reflect supply.

Hard to know really. Any further supplies arriving are a good thing.

I am so fed up hearing about friends in late 30s/early 40s who are healthy with no underlying conditions, having their first dose - either stretching the definition of carer or getting randomly called up for spare doses. I am pleased for them but starting to feel a mug for waiting patiently myself and for DH who is not quite old enough for group 9, or fat/ill enough for group 6, to get ours "when it's our turn". We feel like sitting ducks with DS in school, cases stabilising/?rising and everyone else about to start mingling merrily.

Yes, I feel this way too. I feel like a mug. I don't think I really qualify for the carer box but I AM a carer for a preschool child who can't wipe her own bum, feed herself or go to to sleep without me there (without crying for hours first). I also do shopping for my elderly parents and check on them regularly (both in their late 70s with medical conditions). Without me, both would be very badly affected. I have ongoing medical conditions that the GP can't figure out. I'm not in good health anyway, I'm pretty sure covid would floor me if not worse and I know several women in my age group with long covid who can no longer walk very far because they get too out of breath a year on.

We're sitting ducks. If the restrictions were continuing I'd feel happier, if schools were safer, I'd feel happier but they're not. Everyone is putting on FB about the barbecues and days out they're going to have, the clubs with tens of children mixing from different schools that they'll be doing after Easter hols. There is no way rates won't go up. I think it's going to be fast too.

This postcode lottery is unfair.
