The vaccine delay has really knocked me

For background I'm 49 and a lone parent. of course it's good about the amount of vaccines done. But right now, the sudden announcement of the delay last week felt like the final straw somehow for me.

I had already been worried about dcs back at school, but was following the news closely, looking on the vaccine calculator regularly, and -stupidly- told myself it would be in April. Feels like I was hanging on by my fingertips for that.

Since that's been withdrawn I feel so down. Most people I know seem to have got the vaccine now. I'm wondering if for 49s it will even get here in May - if there's a shortage they'll have to prioritise second doses.

I'm surprised how much it's knocked me down. Just totally lacking in hope now, thoroughly fed up, feel depressed. Anyone else get this?

@DoodleDJ still over 50s only booking online.

Is it definitely stopping for April? Anyone know?

PrintempsAhoy · 25/03/2021 14:36

In my area they started vaccinating age 40-50 this week

Stillgoings · 25/03/2021 15:25

I still check the online booker every day but mostly just feel hopeless. I'm 47 so it is always a big no for the mass vaccination sites. Our doctors are only moving to 60+ this weekend so I have no hope there either. I work front line with the public and am really scared about getting covid. My husband is CEV and his vaccine is likely to not be effective but I am not his carer. No one seems to care about this situation..I find it really distressing, and am sick of hearing about surgeries way ahead of ours

I agree. Go and book yourself if he's CEV.

The appointments are there.

I agree too if it helps sway you.

Don’t forget this system was set up quickly and is using very broad definitions, sometimes the box you need to tick won’t fit you exactly but is the closest thing to describe you.

Cornettoninja · 25/03/2021 16:05

That last post was aimed at @Stillgoings

IloveJKRowling · 25/03/2021 16:14

@farley123 that sounds unbelievably stressful. You say you feel broken (I would too in your position and would resign if I could) - can you talk to your GP about getting signed off with stress / anxiety? I don't think vulnerable school staff should be having to go in until they're vaccinated, at least with the first dose.

Caps444 · 25/03/2021 16:20

@farley123

I feel the same Daisies, I have been struggling for a long time and now feel like I am losing my last reserves of resilience.

I am 49, a lone parent, asthmatic and a teaching assistant in a secondary school , I worked full time in classrooms full of KS4 keyworker/vulnerable pupils during the lockdown. My asthma isn't bad enough for me to qualify for priority vaccination so I was hanging on for my age group to get to the front of the queue - it is so hard to adjust to this new delay.

My brother, 46, no health conditions, working from home throughout was vaccinated a couple of weeks ago.

It is very scary working in a school, moving around busy corridors, sitting in classrooms with limited ventilation and no realistic possibility of social distancing and the thought of continuing like this without being vaccinated whilst restrictions start easing so that pupils will be mingling even more than they are now is just crushing. I really feel broken by this.

Just go on the nhs site, tick unpaid carer, get the appointment for the weekend and relieve your stress. Not worth it.

Having been really despondent about this, I have just received an invitation for a vaccine appointment tomorrow. I'm 48 and in group 10. I hope that this will give some hope to those who are still waiting.

Pleased for you and will keep my fingers crossed!
AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2021 16:30

I will keep my fingers crossed for all who are still waiting @middleager. I was so worried this morning that I would have to wait until May or whenever. I hope that others don't have to wait too long!

mrsknottschicken · 25/03/2021 16:43

It might not be that long. My friends (both 45) got texts today. They live about 3 miles from me. I’ve not heard yet but hopefully soon. I’m 45 too.

CooDeGrass · 25/03/2021 16:47

Nothing here yet (49). Don’t know whether to be heartened or frustrated at hearing lots of 40 somethings getting their invites.

It feels rather like that bit in every disaster movie where there’s a countdown to the missile landing/doors closing/wave hitting etc etc (and yes, I do know I’ll get one eventually, that every jab is a bonus, that we’re doing so well as a country - but for goodness’ sake, we’re only human, this uncertainty is hard work)

DobbyTheHouseElk · 25/03/2021 16:50

I agree. I was so hopeful. I have elderly parents who rely on me for shopping. DC in primary school. I felt like my turn was coming.

DH was vaccinated at the weekend and they wouldn’t allow me to be vaccinated. Apparently they could up to 2 weeks ago when things tightened. Now they can’t offer vaccines to anyone else apart from those booked in. This was mass vaccination centre.

AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2021 17:22

Please be heartened @CooDeGrass and @DobbyTheHouseElk. I know exactly how your feel. I was honestly feeling so hopeless about the vaccines only this morning. Hopefully you will both get your invites very soon, and the same for everyone else on this thread.

daisiesinmay · 25/03/2021 17:27

Yes there's something more stressful somehow in getting so close, it really did feel like we were nearly there, and then it's all gone. Especially with cases starting to go up in schools, and then all the mixing people might do in April. Good for those in their 40s getting one but I should think that's the exception and it's definitely not the case where I live.

OP posts:
daisiesinmay · 25/03/2021 17:27

Alexashutup was that from your GP or at a vaccine centre?

OP posts:
AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2021 17:31

I'm a bit confused as to where it came from tbh. It just says NHS-no-reply.

I think it was probably via my surgery as they have some info about the texts on their website, but I have to go to a local vaccine centre to actually get the jab.

AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2021 17:33

I've just re-read the text. It appears to be from some sort of umbrella organisation for GPs in my area.

poppycat10 · 25/03/2021 17:34

Yes someone said I should have gone along with DH last week but I thought they would have told me to bog off and wait my turn, so I didn't.

AlexaShutUp · 25/03/2021 17:43

Yes someone said I should have gone along with DH last week but I thought they would have told me to bog off and wait my turn, so I didn't.

Lots of people said that to me when DH went for his vaccine. Then a few people were also advising me to book in as an unpaid carer because I do shopping and pick up prescriptions etc for my CEV parents. I didn't feel that either of these were appropriate and I wanted to wait for my rightful turn, but I was really second guessing myself about that this morning when I was convinced that I would have to wait weeks before I would be eligible.

Willow2017 · 25/03/2021 17:55

@daisiesinmay

Yes and it's people in their 30s and 40s who are the main age groups with kids in school so at greater risk
Scientific studies from all over have shown that those with kids in school are significantly LESS liable to get it than those without. Doesnt anyone read anything not spouted by the BBC anymore?

Wouldnt it be better if ALL the vulnerable all over the world were vaccinated first as far as is possible instead of those that are at precious little risk at all?

daisiesinmay · 25/03/2021 18:05

Can you link to that study Willow2017
