Prince Charles and Camila off to Greece

CKBJ · 20/03/2021 11:33

As the title states they are off to Greece for two days next week to celebrate Independence Day www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a35886831/prince-charles-camilla-royal-tour-greece-2021/

I think this is highly inappropriate and yet again sends the wrong message about travel outside this country. A lot of people would like to travel abroad whether that be for work, holidays or to visit family but are not doing so. Why couldn’t they make a virtual visit? They are both in the vulnerable category, being over 70, and have only received the first dose of the vaccine. Charles has also had Covid. I think this sends the wrong message to many people who have had either or both: the vaccine or Covid.

It’s a diplomatic work trip FFS, at the request of the British Government.

Exactly.

Maybe Greece would feel snubbed if other countries didn't accept the invited. The UK having just walked away from Europe needs to keep working on international relations.

It's not as if they're going to lie on a beach.

user143677433 · 21/03/2021 01:38

It’s an official state visit at the request of the Greek government, not a long weekend at the beach.

If football players, golfers, cyclists can still travel for work, even my friend’s husband who’s a whisky salesman, I can’t see any difference with this.

Ohforarainyday · 21/03/2021 01:40

They’re hardly going to be sat on a beach.
They aren't exactly going to be slaving in a coal mine, or doing a shift in a factory.

It's a jolly dressed up as a work trip.

Charles travelled illegally to a different country while he was isolating with Covid. He doesn't give a shit about rules.

Did he have covid twice? I remember he had covid before lockdown started, in mid-March. I don’t remember the travel restrictions being in place then.

My first reaction is that it is rather inappropriate and could perhaps wait.

However thinking about it they are public figures fulfilling duties. It is a big occasion in Greece and at this time the government need all the European good will it can get now. If them going to Greece helps smooth relations that is a good thing.

Lockdownbear · 21/03/2021 02:34

Charles tested positive in Scotland. He didn't move after getting tested.

RoseRedRoseBlue · 21/03/2021 03:00

This is so unnecessary. Once again, the Royals get it wrong.

shamalidacdak · 21/03/2021 03:38

Why can't they zoom like rest of us?

WisteriaSuperior · 21/03/2021 03:50

Completely agree. Abhorrent.

ZZTopGuitarSolo · 21/03/2021 03:59

@VenusTiger

Who cares - with CDC admitting to 130k cases being put down to Covid and them not being Covid and ONS admitting that the PCR only detects one gene out of three required to confirm Covid - it's all getting bloody ridiculous now. I'm sticking with watching how the 17 states in the USA fair with zero restrictions - including Florida which has been restriction free since Sept 2020.
Florida has not been restriction free since last Sept. I was there in Feb and masks were required in nearly every building we went into, and outdoors in many areas too. A very very few shops did not require them. Distancing and limited numbers were also in place.

Exactly this. There have been a lot of sportspeople and entertainers travelling around the world - haven't heard a peep about that on MN!!!

This might well cause some more mass demonstrations in London, with people objecting to royalty and travel in the pandemic..!

Rubbish. I think a demonstration would have more chance of spreading the virus than the Cornwalls going on a brief, official visit abroad. They have to do these things, it doesn't spell 'fun'. I wouldn't want to travel all that way and back just for one event, more hassle than it's worth but obviously I would do it if it was part of my job and it is part of theirs.
fallfallfall · 21/03/2021 04:59

it's official business. possibly really helpful to greece who is trying to get it's economy back. but if people want to go to greece you can as well. they are open to UK travellers a few basic restrictions but not impossible.

Nikki078 · 21/03/2021 06:43

Unnecessary and highly inappropriate at the time when we're asked to make sacrifices, if you ask me. The same as William's and Kate's 'suportive visit' to Scotland or the primary school trip earlier this month. Reflects a very poor judgement on their part in my opinion. I have much more respect for Princess Sofia and Leo Varadkar who at least acted as if they tried to contribute to the collective effort of fighting the pandemic rather than continuing to live in their priviledged little bubble.

BigFatLiar · 21/03/2021 07:56

Is it just members of the Royal Family who we object to travelling?

Lots & lots of people travelling overseas for 'official' reasons.

meditrina · 21/03/2021 08:01

It's governmental invitation, not personal choice.

And the business of government goes on, and as pointed out already, business travel can be permissible.

The government/diplomacy stuff is a part of being a working royal, and goes with having a monarch as head of state. PoW does all the queen's travelling these days.

But I agree that it's an odd choice for both governments to have made, and seems premature

megletsecond · 21/03/2021 11:17

I hope he's got a letter from his employer Grin.

toffeebutterpopcorn · 21/03/2021 11:37

Or a ‘let off’ letter from his mum...

I've no objection to this particular visit. If it wasn't considered to be quite important in the scheme of things, they wouldn't be going. People are carrying on as if it's a holiday and it isn't. They will hardly have unpacked (or been unpacked), before they fly back home.
HeyGirlHeyBoy · 21/03/2021 11:48

Because they're Royal, you would expect them to follow the rules to the nth degree, that's just life, they are looked up to. However as it is work they have to go as they could lose their jobs if... Oh wait.. Hmm

Can't you?

All the people you describe are earning a living. The royal family are not.

TheVampiresWife, you cannot be serious.

TheVampiresWife · 21/03/2021 13:38

Perfectly.

The royal family don't need to earn a living. This isn't an essential diplomatic visit. To be fair, I can't really see why selling whiskey is deemed essential enough to warrant foreign travel at the moment either. Doesn't make unnecessary travel by the RF acceptable, however.
