Prince Charles and Camila off to Greece

CKBJ · 20/03/2021 11:33

As the title states they are off to Greece for two days next week to celebrate Independence Day www.townandcountrymag.com/society/tradition/a35886831/prince-charles-camilla-royal-tour-greece-2021/

I think this is highly inappropriate and yet again sends the wrong message about travel outside this country. A lot of people would like to travel abroad whether that be for work, holidays or to visit family but are not doing so. Why couldn’t they make a virtual visit? They are both in the vulnerable category, being over 70, and have only received the first dose of the vaccine. Charles has also had Covid. I think this sends the wrong message to many people who have had either or both: the vaccine or Covid.

OP posts:
jessstan2 · 20/03/2021 12:21

I expect they will receive the second dose of the vaccination before they go. I'm sure they will be careful and won't be milling around for hours in crowded airports. Greece is one of the healthiest countries on the planet.

RickiTarr · 20/03/2021 12:22

You’d think all the British royals were totally locked down under the strict control of PR advisers considering the combination of COVID & Oprah.

CuthbertDibbleandGrubb · 20/03/2021 12:25

I agree it's inappropriate. Though no less so than almost all of the Prime Minister's visits over the last few weeks.

BigFatLiar · 20/03/2021 12:28

Lots of people on 'work' trips, different view of what's essential.

Just had Cheltenham, lots of Irish visitors. Lots of teams (well a few) travelling for football. World championships skiing has been on in various countries with people travelling around.

To think nobody is travelling is silly.

TheVampiresWife · 20/03/2021 12:30

@Theunamedcat

How long are we going to say we are in the middle of a pandemic for? We are reopening coming out if lockdown getting back to "normal" unless its people on the news then they are horrendous people and it "shouldn't be allowed" other people are still going on planes and trains on holidays and work trips why should the Royal family be different
Well, we'll certainly be in the middle of a pandemic next week when they go to Greece.

Just this morning the news is full of grim warnings about European travel and the third wave raging in several European countries. What you have to remember is that it's not just two people off on a little trip together - there's a whole entourage who must travel with them, and others involved with security and so on when they get there. Potentially hundreds of people who will be involved in an unnecessary trip.

And most people go on work trips to earn a living, something the royal family don't have to worry about. So that's why they're different.

Scarlettpixie · 20/03/2021 12:31

It’s a work trip. Lots of people are travelling for work. I can’t get worked up about it. So long as they follow any rules on quarantine.

That said, I don’t think anyone should be travelling for work unless essential.

Unsure33 · 20/03/2021 12:34

if it is not against the law and its a work trip then they are not doing any different to thousands of other people .

if they were breaking the law then I would agree .

VenusTiger · 20/03/2021 12:37

Who cares - with CDC admitting to 130k cases being put down to Covid and them not being Covid and ONS admitting that the PCR only detects one gene out of three required to confirm Covid - it's all getting bloody ridiculous now.
I'm sticking with watching how the 17 states in the USA fair with zero restrictions - including Florida which has been restriction free since Sept 2020.

DrinkFeckArseGirls · 20/03/2021 12:37

PC is half Greek so maybe why it’s an important trip plus it’s for work. Can’t get worked up about it.

TheVampiresWife · 20/03/2021 12:38

How is it a 'work' trip? Seriously?

Work suggests earning a living. Of course earning a living is essential, or if your area of work is in itself essential - say, medicine or if you're in government. But a jolly to Greece to mark a date? That is in no way essential. And the RF don't need to earn a living.

Ergo, not a work trip, and definitely not essential.

Theunamedcat · 20/03/2021 12:42

We have been allowed non essential things for quite sometime

Muddledupme · 20/03/2021 12:46

When are the rules not the rules oh yes when your rich.lockdown means that people have been unable to celebrate births, marriages birthdays anniversaries etc but if your a royal the risk evaporates.

TheVampiresWife · 20/03/2021 12:49

There's a thread on here about a lady in her eighties who received a late night visit from the police, because someone had reported her for having a SD cup of tea in the communal gardens of her care home.

But it's ok for these two to nob around the world on 'work trips'.

Come off it.

Aposterhasnoname · 20/03/2021 12:55

@dishydishemup

Will they be staying at the Coronavirus hotel when they return? I doubt it
Irrelevant, no one who goes to Greece has to spend their quarantine in a hotel.
Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/03/2021 12:58

Please could you expand on this, @VenusTiger ? It sounds pretty worrying but I can't find anything by googling ...

At best, it's completely tone deaf, at worst, an affront

You just described the existence of the RF, The Vampire. If Charles cared even a little about "how things look" he might be less keen on taking private jets to climate events, but I can't get too worked up about visiting Greece. I'll be doing it myself the instant we're allowed - except being a pleb I probably won't be

minniemoocher · 20/03/2021 13:16

These trips are arranged by the government for political reasons, it's not a personal jaunt.

FinallyHere · 20/03/2021 13:18

I agree that it seems a little off. I think the decision of the Irish Taoiseach and US President to op for a virtual meeting to celebrate St Patrick's Day much more fitting for world leaders.

Ohforarainyday · 20/03/2021 13:28

Horrendous.

But this is Prince Charles who moved location twice, including fleeing to his second home in Scotland when Nicola Sturgeon had explicitly said no one in England should travel to second homes in Scotland, while he had Covid and was quarantining.

The royals cock a snook at the rest of us and laugh at us behind our backs. They know the rules don't apply to them.

CommanderBurnham · 20/03/2021 13:44

I know it's not right, or in the spirit of the lockdown BUT I'd be sorely tempted in their position. I wouldn't begrudge anyone a trip in the sunshine right now.

PropsPropel · 20/03/2021 13:45

That's unbelievable tone deaf. I'm actually really shocked.

Eaumyword · 20/03/2021 13:47

This. I don't mind (almost all of) the RF and take an interest in what they do. I agree with a pp that the optics are awful given the timing and the restrictions still in place. It can be celebrated in some way here. Absolutely no need for them plus staff to fly abroad. No need for royal or political travel either. We know what schools look like and amusingly, they don't look like how they are staged for VIP visits...
BonnieDundee · 20/03/2021 14:10

We have been allowed non essential things for quite sometime

We're not allowed non essential travel abroad and nobody will convince me, however well it's spun, that this is essential

But PC always does WTF he likes.

YogaLite · 20/03/2021 14:18

Well, it's going to be a chilly week next week so it's nice to catch some sunshine especially if one spent the winter up North.
Hmm

Sleepyblueocean · 20/03/2021 14:26

It may be a 'work' trip but it doesn't look good.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/03/2021 14:34

Thinking about it, I wonder if they'll once again be borrowing some dubious oligarch's yacht for a quick thrash round the Med while they're there?

I seem to recall Camilla had developed quite a taste for other people's ships, and don't suppose they expect to pay ...
