EU threatening to cut off supply of vaccines to UK

Iremembertheelderlykoreanlady · 17/03/2021 13:24

Because they've not got enough apparently (despite the fact that they've got a shit load of AZ stockpiled because they've mostly stopped using it)

This is really starting to piss me off now, and has someone who is due 2nd Pfizer jab in 8 weeks in starting to worry I won't get it!

They're threatening to stop supply to USA too.

Wankers

My advice to the UK would be to approve the Moderna vaccine, see if Pfizer can send you more doses from the US, and get ready to review the Novavax vaccine application ASAP.

Moderna was approved in January by the MHRA but because we hadn't ordered any previously we have to wait our turn in the queue to receive our batches. The US isn't exporting Pfizer to the UK, we are getting doses from the EU manufacturers. Novavax will be subjected to a rolling review by the MHRA just like every other Covid vaccine is, they have been very fast at approving vaccines once the final reports are available. The UK have bought far more vaccines than we need to insure against failures in clinical trials and the vaccines made in the UK are sufficient to dose our population. We'll be OK. Not looking forward to the EU reactions when our population is all vaccinated and we give our surplus to COVAX.

@Haffiana

The EU has not supported their manufacturers and are suffering now.

Fact Check: The EU invested 2.7 Billion euros in covid vaccine development and manufacture.

Let's not start that one again !

Fact check. That's peanuts for such a rich and populous part of the world. The B&M Gates foundation have invested $1.8B. The US invested $18B in Operation Warpspeed (and will be investing more, OP was the Trump Administration's project).

That's all good news, thanks. The supply situation here should improve soon as J&J ramps up production and Novavax gets approved in May. Some of this is now being driven by President Biden's promise to make all US adults eligible in May. When that happens we'll be severely supply-constrained. The good news is that we're now giving 2.4 million jabs a day and that number has been steadily rising with supply.

Luckily for the UK, no one in the EU has the military might to invade the UK when they discover that you're sorted and plan to give your surplus to COVAX. Smile

ScribblingPixie · 17/03/2021 18:16

Thanks to all the very well-informed posters on here - I've learned a lot.

Haffiana · 17/03/2021 18:17

And the UK have spent £12B.

Nope. Incorrect. That is what they have spent on vaccines not on vaccine research and manufacture. They have purchased 400 million doses - far too many btw.

The EU have spent more than that on purchasing because they have a far greater population. 1.6 Billion doses.

It is all just jingoism - stop playing with the truth. It is toe-curlingly embarrassing. It isn't the fucking football world cup.

adeleh · 17/03/2021 18:22

I don't know why I can't quote you poshme - but I wanted to say that your autocorrect is probably to your credit, as it means you're not banging on about the rights and wrongs of Brexit all the time, something of which I'm guilty.
I don't know why magnificent is being rude to you about it.

Baileysforchristmas · 17/03/2021 18:23

I can see a pattern here undermining the product and the UK rollout, then threats, then back to undermining product and then threats, so will there be another scare story after this one? If so what is the point of the EU having AZ vaccines to sit in fridges. All trust in the product is gone, no matter what the data says.

NewYearNewTwatName · 17/03/2021 18:24

Just to Repeat PP louder or those at the back.

Today 17:40 Haffiana

Fact Check: The EU invested 2.7 Billion euros in covid vaccine development and manufacture

And the UK have spent £12B

UK population 66.65m UK spent 12b

EU population 447.7 EU spent million spent 2.7b

EU effectively pissed in the Ocean.

Itsalonghaul · 17/03/2021 18:24

I am sure Russia and China are rubbing their hands in glee, this worked out far better than they could imagine, there is no limit to the damage being done. All music to the ears of the true enemies of the west.

Any day now we can expect Russia and China to ride in to 'rescue' the EU with their 'superior' but unregulated vaccines for cost price of peanuts and sit back and watch the cat fight continue.

I truly despair at the stunted thinking of so many supposedly sensible nations when it comes to thinking through the long term consequences of their actions.

Bluewavescrashing · 17/03/2021 18:25

Ffs. I'm sharing a classroom with 29 other people all day every day. I'd really like my vaccine soon.

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2021 18:25

@Haffiana they have 'bought' so many as they backed every vaccine knowing some wouldn't work. They (the UK tax payer) have given more money to covax than the entire EU. They have supported research of 2 vaccines in the UK. And secured contracts very early to ensure supply. Nothing any other country couldn't have done. But because they didn't they are now moaning about not having enough. If they ban exporting the vaccines we have bought I hope we ban the ingredients for Pfizer. Lets all pretend we are 5.

Itsalonghaul · 17/03/2021 18:26

Hand on heart who on earth can truly trust the EU now?

It is what the world is thinking. Underhand skullduggery has a chilling affect on more than vaccine confidence.

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2021 18:26

As no as JVT said vaccines only protect when in an arm not a fridge. Why doesn't the EU use what is has first before whining like a small child.

pabloescobarselasticband · 17/03/2021 18:28

@Magnificentmug12

How dare you say something bad against the EU. How dare you imply they are bullies or being mean.

This is mumsnet for goodness sake, nothing that shines the U.K. in any good light from the EU is allowed on here.

You should know better, I’m sure there will be LOTS of mumnetters on in a minute too call you names and take offence.

Did you know that the EU signed their contract with AstraZenica one day before the UK signed theirs?

Something that is almost never reported in the UK press.

NewYearNewTwatName · 17/03/2021 18:37

Haffiana Are you really going to make trall though god know how many links and articles to find the one that stated exactly how much At risk money(being money given for research and production at early stages were no return is guaranteed) was spent by the UK, EU, and US.

because my memory is hazy but given the size of the populations, the EU spent less then the UK, and the US spent something astronomical in comparison.

The EU may have come in 3 months later and put large orders in once others countries and large organisations had footed the bill to get a vaccine to were it was a possible viable option.

pabloescobarselasticband · 17/03/2021 18:38

I have relatives in spain who are 68 and 60. No hint of a vaccination and no clue as to when they will be getting one! They also dont know anyone who has had one yet either.

Guinan · 17/03/2021 18:39

@mumsneedwine
They (the UK tax payer) have given more money to covax than the entire EU.

Fact check: The EU has given far more than the UK - the contribution of Germany alone is already higher.

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2021 18:39

@Haffiana well they are rubbish at contracts then. Because ours states it will be delivered. And EU states will be delivered if possible. Maybe they need better lawyers next time. And to spend more money on useful research. I believe the French vaccine failed.

mumsneedwine · 17/03/2021 18:41

@Guinan that shows commitment, not what had actually been paid so far. Lets hope they honour their comportment sometime soon.

MrsHuntGeneNotJeremyObviously · 17/03/2021 18:45

It's what's in the contract that counts though

Football teams.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 17/03/2021 18:47

Nasty cynic that I am, I too have been wondering who (apart from the owners) stands to benefit financially from turning the world off the AZ, in the hope of flogging them the 5 times more expensive Pfizer instead. Or any other vaccine that unlike the AZ, isn’t not-for-profit.
