Will lots just say 'stuff it' come the 23rd?

It'll soon be a year since lockdown was first called and me and DH have been watching lots of TV coverage over the last few days. It's just dawned on us this week that we have now not seen our parents for a year, the DC haven't hugged their grandparents, we haven't been for any days out as a family, DC1 hasn't had a single uni class in person. The list goes on.

DH and I are now quickly coming to the conclusion that we just cannot and will not go on living like this any longer as a family. Particularly when there seems to be no end in sight if you listen to people like Chris Whitty and Christina Pagel (who was wanting masks and social distancing for the foreseeable future last night on the news).

Both sets of parents are in their mid 60s and have been vaccinated. We are now strongly minded to visit both at the beginning of April and allow them to see their DGC.

I suspect we will not be alone. Will lots of people simply say 'no more' upon realising they've spent a year of their lives not living?

@Workinghardeveryday

How can some people be so selfish as to think ‘fuck it’ and not follow the rules?!!!! I am thinking they are generally selfish people in day to day life anyway. CEV and not left the house since end of last February apart from to take the kids to school which in itself is a massive worry because my kids are mixing with kids of selfish people risking me snd my family. Yes I am totally pissed off not seeing anyone, I miss my mum. Haven’t seen one friend or family all this time but kids and dp. I want to you into a supermarket and pick out my own food but I would risk running into selfish people who haven’t followed the rules because clearly they have it harder than everyone else and obviously more special than the rest of us to have to follow rules. These people infuriate me with their selfishness. Don’t you feel guilty?!! Surely because you’re totally fed up with it all isn’t a reason. We are ALL fed up. Thank you for all those who do follow the rules!!!
IF you are CEV surely you've already had one dose of vaccine and therefore have some decent protection?

I don't think people seeing their close family are selfish, and no I don't feel guilty. Big house parties or gatherings yes, they are unnecessary right now, but it should never be illegal to see family. I'm actually horrified at the people on here thinking it's selfish to want to do this after a year of restrictions.

It's unfortunate for those who are extremely vulnerable, but most should have had a vaccine by now and the virus isn't ever going away so we need to get on with our lives. It's unfair to expect the majority of people to restrict their lives so much for much longer for a small minority of people.

Hopeandglory · 15/03/2021 14:31

This thread is so sad with the mixed emotions on it, for the CEV poster who commented fuck it, I would ask that what ever has put her in that catagory why does she not feel that the NHS staff deserve her support, my DD is a critical care nurse and this year has changed her. If you are unwilling to adher to the lockdown rules would you be happy not to accept NHS care should you require it, maybe not for covid reasons but for an accident or injury. The NHS staff are exhausted mentally and physically so why should they go out of their way for you?

Workinghardeveryday · 15/03/2021 15:18

@ Racoonworld
Yes I have had my first vaccine but unfortunately because of the medication I am on they already know I will not get the same cover if any as other people would. So I am still shielding and been advised to do so.

I get you should be able to see family I really do. But we are in the middle of a pandemic. If everyone behaved like you we would all be infected by now. Including all nhs to look after you when you need it just like the previous poster said.

If one of your close family was CEV would you behave the same?

If one of my close family were CEV I wouldn't see them. I only see family that aren't vulnerable or who have had the vaccine (plus a few weeks for it to work). I've actually followed all the rules until now. But a year is long enough, it isn't fair now. For me personally, the risk of not being able to see my family and get help with my baby is much higher than the risk of me getting Covid. I need to look after my own family now after a year of putting others first.
Racoonworld · 15/03/2021 15:37

I also think a lot of people are doing this. Most people I know are now putting their family first and seeing a few select people, they just don't broadcast it everywhere. I don't think they are selfish for doing this.

Workinghardeveryday · 15/03/2021 15:51

@ Racoonworld
I see what your saying and it must be hard with a baby, remember that stage very well.

It’s not just about if you catch it though or your family. So for instance one of the family members you meet with infects the rest of you but your all fine, mild symptoms. But by you meeting with them and catching it you then pass it onto your DP, who then goes to work passes it on to a colleague who takes it home and passes onto his CEV wife and she dies. All because you met up with your family, if you hadn’t she would still be alive. Potentially leaving young kids without a mother.
Can you not see from my point of view I am totally helpless, my life is literally in everyone else’s hands as to whether you follow the rules.

I think about leaving my 3 kids without a mum everyday and it’s horrible.

Umm no it won't, there's a vaccine now. I had mine yesterday.

I know, not hard to see it happening is it?

It’s not something that can be risk assessed based on personal risk alone as it affects others in schools, shops, workplaces etc. I’d expect other adults be following the rules and not be selfish in putting others at risk for personal gains. Quite sad how many aren’t and it makes me wonder what children’s futures will be like.

Got to get back to normal at some point, folks, covid or no covid.
BonnieDundee · 15/03/2021 16:30

I've followed the rules religiously for a year.my work (NHS) has not protected me properly. I caught it while following the rules.

I am honestly sorry for everyone vulnerable but its actually selfish of you to expect others, possibly suffering from exacerbated MH problems not to have the support of their extended family. We've made sacrifices for a year and I'd say the government have been extremely fortunate that so many have, what with their general pissstaking (Cummings, Jenrick.etc) and handing out taxpayers money to their mates to piss up against the wall. it could have been better managed. I've done all I'm prepared to.

We’ve given up a year of our lives!!!! All the elderly and vulnerable are now vaccinated. Enough is enough. If people are still scared of the virus and want to stay home, that’s their choice. But don’t you dare call others selfish after everything we have sacrificed over the last 14 months.

This! We are not going to be able to eliminate Covid, it is here to stay, we must get back to normal and live our lives again.

PomegranateQueen · 15/03/2021 16:57

Hopeandglory

It's not the fault of the general population that the NHS is so underfunded. Why should people think of your daughter before themselves, thier children and the rest of thier family? By the same token should we refuse care to smokers, people who eat too much, or women who planned a pregnancy during a pandemic?

Racoonworld · 15/03/2021 16:58

@Workinghardeveryday I can see your point of view, and know it must be very hard for you to live with the risk of Covid, and that's why I stuck to the rules completely for a year. I didn't even see any family at Christmas as it was cancelled for my area last minute.

But, ultimately I will put my family first, over people I don't actually know, and now after a year it is time for me to do that. I strongly believe it should not be illegal to see your own family in your own home, and people need to take responsibility for themselves at this point.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/03/2021 17:04

@kittensarecute

We've had vaccines since December.

60,000 British people have died of covid since we started vaccinating.

Yes exactly. You said it better than me.
PrincessNutNuts · 15/03/2021 17:10

@Wondermule

The elderly and vulnerable are not "all vaccinated"

Not quite 3% of the population is vaccinated and the JCVI 9 vulnerable groups total 32 million people or roughly 49%

The country needs between 70-90% for herd immunity.

We're 5 months away from that.

3%? Where on Earth did you get that figure?

Nearly 24 million people have been vaccinated which is, according to my rusty mental maths, around a third of the population.

CovidPostingName · 15/03/2021 17:58

@Wondermule Presumably fully vaccinated sections dose recipients.

CovidPostingName · 15/03/2021 17:58

Second dose, sigh.

ShutUpAlex · 15/03/2021 18:01

I don’t know anybody in real life who are sticking to the rules tbh! Round here it’s all very normal.

PrincessNutNuts · 15/03/2021 18:09

@Wondermule

We need between 70% and 90% of the population fully vaccinated to achieve herd immunity.

Or between 46 million and 59 million people fully vaccinated.

Currently we have 2.4% fully vaccinated and 36.6% have had a first dose.

My great uncle who is is group 1 of the JCVI priority list has has had his first dose. His second isn't until next month.

My uncle is in his 60s and he hasn't had any vaccine yet. His first is next week and his second in June.

My friend is in group 4 due to her cancer diagnosis, and she has had one dose which they don't think works very well in cancer patients, and her second isn't until May.

It's just untrue to say that the vulnerable are vaccinated.

They haven't even finished the first doses for the JCVI 9 yet.

There are 150,000 people over 70 who haven't had any vaccine at all.

It won't be long. Just a few months. But it's completely at odds with the facts to say that the vulnerable have been vaccinated at the moment.
