Is it fair to say teachers need to be more committed?

Seems a tad harsh I think

No, I think you have massively misrepresented what Wilshaw said in the article. Can't think why.....

EnoughnowIthink · 26/02/2021 17:29

No. That's someone with absolutely not one clue as to what has gone on this year across the teaching profession and school.

PheasantPlucker1 · 26/02/2021 17:32

Headline, "Teachers should be prepared to sacrifice their lives".

I notice he isnt volunteering to go first.
Or even risk entering a classroom.

AliceBlueGown · 26/02/2021 17:35

Michael Wilshaw so not surprising...OP think you might be setting this up in the hope of creating a 'lazy teacher' type of thread. I hope not but that is what it looks like to me.

Ladytremain · 26/02/2021 17:42

@AliceBlueGown and @Barbie222 sorry to disappoint. I work in a school so you are barking up the wrong tree. I’m not a teacher but I know what school conditions are like to work in at the moment. I think it’s a harsh comment

Teacher shortages before this were dire. After this they're going to be absolutely devastating. (I don't suppose people will care as their kids will be 'in school' which seems to be the only measure people use for whether their child is being educated or not!)

NovemberR · 26/02/2021 17:47

I think it's utterly disgraceful to suggest teachers should be prepared to die because of unsafe conditions in schools.

It's a damn job.

What about their families and their own children? He should not be allowed to have anything to do with education ever again.

user1471427614 · 26/02/2021 17:47

Ot is a harsh comment you are right. Many teacher have gone above and beyond. Many sacrificing their own childrens education and family time to cope with the ever changing goal posts and challenges of online teaching. I know I have never been this busy or this stressed. As others have said before he does know what talking about

Watsername · 26/02/2021 17:50

What more can teachers and school staff do???? They are working flat out already. Schools are not currently shut. I am a TA in school every day.

MrsWooster · 26/02/2021 17:52

No. Hth

disconnecteddrifter · 26/02/2021 17:53

Bloody exhausted teacher here. My own kids and husband are constantly neglected and 12 hr days still is not enough time to get everything done properly. Why are people trying to bash teachers? They look after your kids and educate them.

Yes this is what I always think. We get slagged off and yet we are still good enough to babysit/educate!
Totallyfedup1979 · 26/02/2021 18:03

When I saw the name Michael Wilshaw, it made sense. He’s a twat.

DudeistPriest · 26/02/2021 18:04

Ok he went there. Teachers have to be willing to sacrifice their lives?

recluse · 26/02/2021 18:06

Yes I was thinking that, what a twat.

Not to mention the fact that medical staff might not have died in as large numbers if they had had better PPE 😡.

YouHadMeAtWoof · 26/02/2021 18:06

I’m a teacher and I’m currently not even willing to sacrifice my weekends so he’ll be lucky if he gets me to die for teaching!

woodlands01 · 26/02/2021 18:07

Secondary school teacher here - I absolutely have no words.
Sorry I do - just fuck off.

FancySomeChips · 26/02/2021 18:07

I am disgusted at the way school staff have been treated.

Disgusted.

Lickofpink · 26/02/2021 18:09

He is a disgrace.

flumposie · 26/02/2021 18:09

What a twat.

AlexaShutUp · 26/02/2021 18:13

No, I'm not a teacher, but I think teachers have already demonstrated more than enough commitment. I'm sure that the vast majority of them do want to do everything in their power to help close the gap that has emerged due to the pandemic, but we need to be reasonable about our expectations of them and mindful that there is already a retention crisis in the sector. My dd's secondary school teachers have been bending over backwards to support the kids as effectively as they possibly can during the last year, with many of them going above and beyond. The same goes for the teachers in the primary school where I'm a governor. I'm very grateful for their efforts, but I really don't want to push anyone over the edgeby asking too much of them.

It is true that medics (and nurses) have risked their lives in this pandemic, and I'm deeply grateful for their sacrifices too, but I'm also furious that they weren't given proper PPE from the outset. The fact that we failed to protect people in other sectors adequately doesn't mean that we should push teachers under the bus as well.

LolaSmiles · 26/02/2021 18:15

He can sod off. He sounds like an angry Mumsnetter on a school thread.

I'm sure there's going to be lots of support for him on here from the usual crowd of anti-teacher posters who show up repeating the same claims endlessly, even when teachers have pointed out they are incorrect.

WombatChocolate · 26/02/2021 18:16

Goady thread by any chance?

manicinsomniac · 26/02/2021 18:21

The teacher obsession on this site baffles me. I just don't see it anywhere else. And I am a teacher, so I know a lot of us!

Many mumsnet teachers seem determined to take every opportunity to point out how they've 'never worked harder', are 'on their knees' and have been 'thrown under a bus with no ppe'.

Many mumsnet non teachers seem determined to point out at every opportunity that teachers are 'workshy', 'make everything about them' and have way more time now than we did pre Covid because we're apparently sitting around in our pjs all day.

Yet, in the real world, everyone just seems to get on with working hard at whatever job they do, respecting that everyone else is doing the same. It's like a parallel universe.

In answer to the question I would imagine, in all probability, that there are a small number of teachers who aren't committed to their jobs but that the vast majority are. Which I think is also true of every single other profession too! But it's more singling out of teachers as a special entity which we just aren't. For either good or bad reasons. We are one of many professions doing our jobs, same as everyone else.

Ladytremain · 26/02/2021 18:22

@WombatChocolate RTFT. I already said no. I thought it was a harsh statement and really he has a brass neck to say this . I work in a school. So no I’m not being goady.
