When will y11 leave?

Have any of your schools given you any indication when your y11 will leave for good? It's normally early June with study leave from whit week but obviously this year is different.

The grades have to be submitted by mid June. Will they go then? Would you want them in school after that? The behaviour would be atrocious if they kept them in. Unless they finished a course for Alevel.

Prior to covid I had planned to take mine for a cheap holiday. Not now though.

Our local academy chain school will get shot of them at the usual date as they use Fixed Term Contracts to save money and get shot of those teachers when Years 11 and 13 go.

RigaBalsam · 26/02/2021 10:10

I wonder if they will keep them on for extra activities or if they want to finish a course for A level.

52andblue · 26/02/2021 10:13

@Jo99996

when is that please? My Y11 is in an Academy and I can get no answers!

coffeeandteac · 14/03/2021 13:04

Does anyone have any updates on their child's school?

OrangeBananaFish · 14/03/2021 13:06

DSs school have said that they use work/tests etc up to 11th June for GSCE grading so I'm thinking that will be their last date. Although this has not been confirmed as their last day in school.

Midlifephoenix · 14/03/2021 13:10

There was a thread about this before and general consensus was May half term. Grades will have been decided pretty much by then for review before submission. Our school has optional activities after that and some pre A level stuff but my daughter is moving to another for sixth form.

iMatter · 14/03/2021 13:14

I thought mid June but may be wrong. My son's school haven't said anything formally so I imagine it's all a moving feast atm.

AlexaShutUp · 14/03/2021 13:15

Our school have now confirmed that the last day will be 28 May.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 14/03/2021 13:32

We are still working out our QA process and waiting for feedback from all of the exam boards about precisely what they want to see. We are hoping to have all data in by 10th/11th June so that QA can take place, so I expect them gone by then. We are working on some kind of 'summer school' (but during term time) for our students who will need support to bridge the gap between GCSE and A Level/BTEC.

SerenadeOfTheSchoolRun · 14/03/2021 13:32

Our school is not certain yet. The last assessments will be the week before half term so, possibly they will be finished for the year by May half term. There may be a chance to essentially do some "resits" after then - they don't know if that would be allowed or not. Sounds to me like the grades are going to be pretty good this year if they are allowed. Then there may or may not be some activity at some point depending on what is allowed but it really sounded like most of the second half of term would be spent at home until prize giving.

There is quite a process that they have to go through within departments and then across the school with the senior leadership team etc with agreeing the grades so they need some time before 18th June to get that done and it is only two weeks from the start of the second half of term until that date so I can't imagine there will be many kids in doing work in those two weeks.

manicinsomniac · 14/03/2021 13:35

The senior school linked to the school I work at is going to keep Y11 till the end of the year to do a combination of extra curricular projects and start A level courses. But I'm guessing they're thinking about parents being cross about not getting value for money this year. I don't know if it will be compulsory if some children want to leave.

I've got a feeling they always keep Y11 but I'm not sure. Might not be a Covid thing.

Wakemeuuuup · 14/03/2021 14:42

I think my son's school will keep them in as long as possible. I'm going for end of June. Some teachers are telling them it'll be May while others are saying July Smile

MrsHamlet · 14/03/2021 14:44

Not all schools give study leave even in normal years.

MoreW1ne · 14/03/2021 14:51

Ours going earlier than usual. Gone before end of May. Going to take weeks to mark all the extra tests and organise their grades so they're going early. Some will be offered additional lessons in late June depending on courses/future study choices, although I doubt many will want to do them.

Faircastle · 14/03/2021 15:29

In a "normal" year (with GCSE exams), Y11s at English state schools are on roll until the last Friday in June. Any leave before that is at the school's discretion.

So far our school are saying they’re hopeful most assessment evidence will be gathered and ready by end of May but there may need to be some further stuff done early June.Presumably if evidence is lacking that particular learning objectives have been satisfied that are required for a certain grade. Basically they have said don’t arrange holidays etc before 18th June , they are still waiting for stuff from the exam boards and hope to be able to tell us more after Easter.

ChilliChaos · 14/03/2021 15:48

Dd was in year 11 last year, obviously no one was in but their official leaving date was June 21st. Ds is year 11 this year and the unofficial date is in the last week in May.

TwigTheWonderKid · 14/03/2021 15:55

At my son's school I think they will keep them until the end of the summer term. They'll probably have a programme of careers advice, enrichment activities etc. Not emphasis on lost learning but on lost experiences.

en0la · 14/03/2021 15:58

Ours will stay until the start of the summer holidays if they are going into the sixth form. The ones leaving can stay on but the school can't make them stay.

blue25 · 14/03/2021 16:08

May half term here.

DrMadelineMaxwell · 14/03/2021 16:11

We're in Wales. DD's school have said they have until 22nd June to build portfolios to prove the children deserve the grades they are down for, so that will be their leaving day.

PenOrPencil · 14/03/2021 16:11

No final decision has been made, but May half term has been mentioned.

Frozenintime · 14/03/2021 18:36

That's a really long time until they start college or sixth form in September Shock

Presumably they will do catch up or start a level work or do enrichment
motherrunner · 14/03/2021 19:11

Secondary teacher here. Nothing set in stone but we’re working on May half term.
