Masks for kids

Is it masks all day then for secondary kids? Can't they just offer all the staff the vaccine and then crack on? Pretty horrible for the kids.

Snap. Why do people want this normalising? Err, so they can have an education and not catch Covid?

wintertravel1980 · 24/02/2021 11:02

Whatever, my kids have been in school since September and are likely to finish the year as normal. They wear masks and are fine about it. You don't want yours to wear them, well enjoy your continued interruptions to their education.

Well... my 4 year old DD is in nursery/pre-school and she has not yet missed a single day this year. We live in a London borough which had very high cases at the peak. DD's school, however, has managed to stay "covid free". I am also hoping they will finish the year "as normal".

Why are English children so much more delicate than children in other countries?

Err there is now a vaccine and the government are on about opening the country up in a matter of weeks. Surely this should have been done last year.

Who said they were?
herecomesthsun · 24/02/2021 11:21

4 years is very different to 17/ 18 (not sure of the age cut off they're using?) I don't think it's early years though

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 24/02/2021 11:25

Who said they were? All the posters saying they are too delicate to wear masks, that their mental health has "suffered enough".

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 24/02/2021 11:25

Even in Spain, under 6s don't have to wear them. We're talking about secondary in the UK.

AfternoonToffee · 24/02/2021 11:26
@palacegirl77Yes I know masks are expensive, but parents are being asked to provide them in other countries.

I would be very happy for the government to pay for them, you could lobby for that if you don't want to pay yourself
A poster has already indicated that they are much cheaper in some other countries, less than £1 for 10.

Some people can barely afford to feed their families, how are they going to manage a mask for every day?

QuidditchQueen · 24/02/2021 11:27

I think this was done just to appease the paranoid people
This - Boris just chickened out of trying to ´make a logical case when so many people are superstitiously welded to them as talismans.
And a sop to the the unions fo that claim a ‘victory’ to their members.
The talk on here of ‘snowflakes’ is appalling - I hope the kids are not exposed to the contempt and bullying bile of those people but sadly some of those are presumably parents and/or teacher Angry

Do you not think it has? My ds would really fucking struggle wearing a mask all day and his mental health has taken an impact. Is it wrong that I care about that?

It's a fair point. Calling people snowflakes because they don't want their children to wear masks could be spun to call those wanting masks snowflakes because they don't want their child to catch a (statistically to them) mild illness. It's crackers.
OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 24/02/2021 11:35

Why would he struggle to wear a mask? Does he have mental health issues that would make it difficult? If so then would he be exempt?
Millions of children wear them everyday all day here. They'd rather not have to in an ideal world but it's not a big thing, they quickly get used to them and it's better than home schooling. I don't really understand why it seems such a massive deal for so many people in the UK.

palacegirl77 · 24/02/2021 11:36

@lst don't let it get to you. Apparently showing any concern for mental health makes you delicate or a snowflake. It's so awful the attitudes people have sometimes. So blinkered.

When I told my daughter (who was desperate to get back to school) she would have to wear a mask all day she said she would prefer to stay at home. That's normal to you?
Stickytreacle · 24/02/2021 11:42

Oh fgs, sorry, but such angst over a teen wearing a mask is; being a snowflake.

What would you do if your child needed painful or traumatic medical procedures? I've had to force multiple tablets down a two year olds throat while they went through constant surgeries for bone marrow sampling and chemo treatment, numerous injections and blood transfusions, constant finger pricks etc. They grew up with no issues.
This rhetoric over 'damaging' masks is more likely harmful to a child than the actual mask.

No he hasn't got any mental health issues. But he us 7 who just currently struggling with how shit life is at the moment. He also wears glasses and wearing a mask makes them steam up.
Stickytreacle · 24/02/2021 11:44

When I was a kid I'd have loved staying at home, so yes normal to me. Probably parroting parents attitudes too.

OrangeBlossomsinthesun · 24/02/2021 11:45

Does she ever wear a mask? My kids did a summer school in July and the first fortnight masks weren't mandatory. The government made them so mid July, so they had to wear them for the last 2 weeks. In southern Spain, in 40 degree heat. They weren't that keen at first but quickly got used to them and the same in September. They do feel restrictive at first, but you really do get used to it. Maybe not in the Uk because you don't really have to wear them, which is part of the problem really.
Again, if you don't want to wear them, you can home school. For the vast majority of children there is no issue with them and the advantage is that it reduces transmission.

He would probably struggle less if he could go to school and see his friends. My daughter has just got glasses (9 years old). She wipes them with an anti fog wipe and wears them with a blue surgical mask. They don't steam up.

I dont want her to wear one because its not been proven to make it any less risk to her (or us). But if youre so scared and snowflaky by all means send your precious one in in a mask, if it makes you less worried. My child is brave enough not to wear one.

See what I did there?

Even though before she knew she would have to wear a mask in lessons she wanted to go in?

Perfect - so if you can link a few studies showing that it does "reduce transmission" specifically in children in school I will happily read them.
Abraxan · 24/02/2021 11:58

LST - 7y in England won't be expected to wear a mask, including at school. The masks are only at secondary. I personally have no issues with secondary school students being asked to wear masks where SDing isn't possible, including in classrooms.

Though his teachers and school staff may be wearing them - many school staff already are and have been doing so for weeks. Though my experience is that staff wearing masks doesn't bother them.
