This is the first time I have actually believed it

*Listen, I get there are some people on here who want to remain in lockdown for the next five years, WFH forever, spread doom and gloom and tell people it’ll be never be over. But I’m afraid your time is up!

This is really unfair I think. This is a really shit situation for everyone, and everyone copes differently. I very much doubt anyone wants to remain in lockdown for 5 years!!

Do you not think that after all these months and having been through God knows what maybe some people are wary of getting their hopes up?! I'm old enough to remember when Boris was telling us this will all be over in 12 weeks. And then it was the autumn, then Christmas, then Easter. Now it's June.

The only way I've got through it is by being realistic - I think it's helped me not to experience a lot of the crushing disappointment and utter gloom and despair so many of my more optimistic friends have experienced over the last year. They're not just saying these things to piss on your chips, it's a valid view.

That's nice to hear 😁. Just got to hope the shows can afford to re employ everyone. 🤞 I know at least one show is scaling down when they re open.

Incogweeto · 22/02/2021 19:45

Cases have plateaued in my town and are now slightly rising. I really want to think that 'the end is in sight' but all I'm looking at right now are worrying stats. If they don't turn into hospital admissions I'll be happy, but equally I won't relax until it's autumn and they still haven't turned into admissions.
@doubleshotespresso what is reckless about it?
It's been widely acknowledged by schools, scientists etc that this "Big Bang" approach to returning is a month too soon in terms of the vaccine rollout etc. Case rates and transmission rates are already too high for surges to be avoided. I'm as keen as anyone here for all to return, but not like this. It's the very definition of insanity to repeat the same mistakes whilst expecting a different set of results.
Just how are bubbles to be maintained in schools when wraparound care continues alongside the school day? It's reckless, irresponsible and not a risk I'm prepared to take at this point. Others are happy to hear what we have all wanted to hear for months of course but the facts remain

@Incogweeto

Are you the same person? If you are, you’re totally batshit and gloomy but gotta love the user names!

People keep saying this. It’s not the same. A third of the adult population is now vaccinated, with thousands more added every day.

Good thing we have working vaccines then

Kazzyhoward · 22/02/2021 20:13

Let's hope the idiot Rishi doesn't re-introduce his "eat out to spread covid" scheme again.

Yes and this third of the population does not include school children, their parents or teachers. Yet!?! Surely it's not difficult to understand the issues this is going to likely generate? We have seen this over and over

Yes isn't it? We just need a shedload more folks to get both doses first right?
VinylDetective · 22/02/2021 20:19

We have seen this over and over

We really haven’t. We’ve vaccinated the people most likely to die or overwhelm the NHS. We’re currently vaccinating the most vulnerable on health grounds. Every vaccination reduces infection rates, transmission and the likelihood of mutations, this reducing the risk to those who are low risk anyway.

I’m no scientist but even I can understand this!

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/02/2021 20:29

I know what lets lockdown until every adult and child in the country is vaccinated. Now that is the definition of insanity. Especially as no vaccine is 100% protection against infection. Oh that makes so much sense 🤦‍♀️

That's absolutely not what I said. I said "it's a month too early". Stop with the ridiculous accusations, as again previously stated as keen as anybody for this to end but not in a move this lacking in common sense. We are still allowed an opinion whilst wanting the same things as you...
Puzzledandpissedoff · 22/02/2021 20:38

It's been widely acknowledged by schools, scientists etc that this "Big Bang" approach to returning is a month too soon in terms of the vaccine rollout etc.

I was surprised myself that they've apparently jettisoned gradual reopening - especially with after school clubs thrown in - but for me it just suggests a realisation that continuing to trash childrens' education isn't an option any more

Ditto jobs, the economy and all the rest. For once Boris has been quite open in saying more will die, but there comes a point where the restrictions (especially now they've got their much-vaunted vaccines) aren't sustainable any more

At least I hope that's how they're thinking - we're in enough of a mess as it is, but if there's any return to lockdowns there'll be little left

Globe22 · 22/02/2021 20:46

Hedonism!!!

PooRaulsRagDace · 22/02/2021 21:14

I’m really buoyed by the positivity of Boris, Chris Whitty and JVT. The vaccines are clearly already having a big effect and so they are able to at least give some pathway out of this never ending nightmare.

So nice to see a thread with good news, I’m sick to the back teeth of posters on this site jumping on any bit of good news with their constant desperation for further restrictions and lockdowns. People need to take a long hard look at themselves if they genuinely want this way of life to continue.

Aren’t you sick of baking, walks and lazy days in front of Netflix yet??

Mittens030869 · 22/02/2021 21:20

i have no faith at all in this government

Nor do I. I have great faith in the scientists who developed the vaccine though. And in the NHS which is rolling it out so quickly.

^This. I have to confess, I've been very pleasantly surprised.

Sadly for me, the easing of restrictions won't miraculously cure my long Covid, but I'm really happy for my DDs, that their lives are going to go back to normal soon.

Our elderly relatives have all been vaccinated, too, and it's been really encouraging to hear such good news about its effectiveness. Smile

Brilliant. Tell you what. You think another month, I think straight away, lets split the difference for arguments sake. Two weeks from now suit you?

Dongdingdong · 22/02/2021 21:23

@KNain I tell you what’s unfair - the posters who have been very obviously relishing spreading doom on this board for months and crushing other people’s hopes. Well now the doommongers’ days are numbered - we are opening up and there is nothing whatsoever you can do about it! I’m off to celebrate - wheeeee! Grin

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/02/2021 21:25

Not quite sure we will ever say goodbye to the doomsters for long but love your spirit ❤

Dongdingdong · 22/02/2021 21:25

I would like to know one thing though - what are the doommongers going to moan about now? Brexit’s over, Trump’s gone and life will very soon be back to normal. I bet you’re all devastated! Grin

doubleshotespresso · 22/02/2021 21:26

I'm encouraged by the news that vaccines are being rolled out but patiently waiting to see evidence of more.

I'm sick of entitled posters assuming teachers are a lower form of life and that anybody who queries the wisdom of their "let's get back to normality despite what the science says" posts is accused of actually enjoying this.

FYI I baked daily prior to Covid it's not a new thing
I don't have and don't want Netflix as I don't have time to watch the tv I do have.
I've been doing hone school unofficially before you knew it was even a prospect out of necessity due to this shitty governments lack of care and budget for children like mine. If D.C. were to return they'd only receive an hour a day anyway - it doesn't suit our lifestyle but we embraced it as it was the right thing to do and continues to be the case. I also support family members shielding , have lost friends and family to Covid and other conditions in the last year abd today attended a close relatives funeral. I'm yet to cook dinner as I'm adapting homework" for tomorrow as it's never tailored to dC's needs. Said D.C. is likely to wake up somewhere between 2-4am and will be so for hours. This has been the case for over a year. Don't assume I've languished in lockdown it's been epically challenging some days, hugely rewarding others. I'll bet my bottom dollar you've wasted more of your time on the sofa with Netflix than I've done baking.

It's fine to disagree but don't for a second dare to assume my life or quite what the last year has taken out of me.
