I can’t see this being reported anywhere but the Daily Fail are reporting masks to be worn in Secondary schools for first few weeks back.

@TimandGinger The problem is that you wouldn't know whether he's infected.

Hence the need for the mask (it also provides a degree of protection for him)

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 24/02/2021 11:05

@TimandGinger

This is why I don't really bother with Mumsnet any more, which is a shame as I used to love it.It was very helpful and funny too. It's just a boring echo chamber now. Like this thread. I'm fully aware that the mask policy in other countries in different as my husband is from a EU country. England is marginally more sensible than Scotland in not mandating them for five years plus, but that's not saying much. I feel sorry for all these children who have parents who think it's fine for them to wear a mask to school.
I would have said the same as you up until last September. Our secondary made mask wearing compulsory in all communal areas apart outside. Then kids could wear masks in class if they wanted.

By the end of September most the kids were choosing to wear their masks in class. My teenager says that he doesn't notice wearing it most the time. That he would not want to make someone else sick because he didn't know he was infected. I think that is similar thinking from his peers too. The kids want to do their bit at that age.

Also a lot are wearing the logo and branded masks. So it is know a major fashion statement apparently 🤦‍♀️ As a parent I wish they had just said plain black masks. However if it gets more people wearing thrm🤷‍♀️

HarveySchlumpfenburger · 24/02/2021 11:06

They were mandated during the 1918 pandemic and recommended/mandated in affected and high risk countries during the SARS outbreak in 2003.

Both of which were caused by viruses and one of which is within living memory.

Frazzled2207 · 24/02/2021 11:08

In France they are compulsory from age 6 (too young IMO) and there’s been few reported outbreaks in schools. They don’t even close the whole class down anymore when there is a case.

also fine for U4T to stop spamming us (please)
Not everyone that objects to masks is part of that group. So people are just having trouble excepting changes or haven't really thought things through. They have a right to their views even if we don't agree with them.

Well unless they are spamming false information or being unnecessary rude

Frequentflier · 24/02/2021 11:12

@timandginger Just to clarify, I have not told my 16 yr old son he might kill his dad. However, he watches the news, and sees that BAME diabetics aged over 50 are at very high risk, and makes his own decisions.

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2021 11:13

Just browsing through twitter and came across this tweet about a different anti-lockdown campaigner that seems to fit here too:

"One of the minor curiosities of Covid in the UK is the incessant anti-lockdown commentary claiming to speak for the sensible, unheard masses, when polling consistently shows that when the masses are actually asked, they believe something else entirely."

UsedUpUsername · 24/02/2021 11:16

@noblegiraffe

never have masks been suggested for the general public for viruses until last year.

Yeah, what's happened in the last year that means that masks have now been suggested for the general public?

Can anyone think of anything?

There’s still no good evidence about universal mask-wearing. We already know it does not protect the wearer. The big question is whether it stops asymptomatic spread. And have we even established asymptomatic spread is real? That’s still not even known: www.bmj.com/content/371/bmj.m4851

IMHO It’s a ‘we did something/are doing something’ measure. To me, that’s not enough to require its use. You may feel differently

animalfarmagain · 24/02/2021 11:17

@ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown

Yes it's other people your son is putting at risk. Does that make it better? Fine if he has reasons for not being able to wear one, but that's not the case is it.
Proof?

Mask threads are always bonkers.

Proof? Actual proof the masks work?

I had to look up for U4T was as I hadn't heard of them.

Lots of people in the real world know that there is no proof that masks help more than they hinder.

I would suggest it is the pro-maskers that spam these boards.

animalfarmagain · 24/02/2021 11:21

Also there is really weak evidence to support the fear surrounding asymptomatic spread.

But it's MN so got to keep up the fear on the Coronavirus board, become more of an echo chamber and drive away any other dissenting views ...

animalfarmagain · 24/02/2021 11:22

Cross post - Used up!

animalfarmagain · 24/02/2021 11:23

Noble, you're quoting an unnamed twitter source to make an argument?

Brilliant.

No, I'm pointing out that batshit people often try to claim that they're the normal ones and that everyone (outside of MN of course) agrees with them.
noblegiraffe · 24/02/2021 11:28

Interesting that the journal article linked to isn't about masks and yet grand claims are being made that masks are ineffective without links.

So you believe Whitty and the other SAGE experts are on mumsnet? They are the ones saying to wear masks and it will help stop infections.

Even if it only helps stop particles spraying to far across a room. Surely that is better than nothing. It is the same as the lateral flow testing. I don't believe for a moment it will catch all cases. However it will catch some. Everything we can do to get schools open quickly and stop to many kids missing school isolating is a good thing.
Do you not agree with that?

animalfarmagain · 24/02/2021 11:36

This is so tiresome.

Sage and co - which evidence are they basing this on? Are they running the county? Why are particles flying across rooms? why does this matter when the risk of covid is low? what is the proof that face coverings stop particles flowing out? when will mask wearing stop, will you still worry about other germs? why does no-one care about the lack of oxygen? why does no-one believe it is an issue? why does the WEF promote a new mask that measures the oxygen/CO2 levels? hoe many of you have been brainwashed to still believe that masks work and how many of you are paid posters with an agenda?

Frequentflier · 24/02/2021 11:39

This is marvellous! Who do you think is paying me? I would love to be paid. maybe I should tweet Chris Whitty.:)

This is the document you need:

Ok now you are sounding a bit 😜

If you want all yhos questions asked try Googling. I am not here to educate you. The information is out there or even better if you have a teenager ask them. Most of that stuff mine has learnt at school.

Basically if you want schools open and to stay open this is the way. If not they carry on as you are.

(If anyone is reading that actually gets paid to post can you private message me. Sounds like a good gig and the extra money could come in handy. I fancy a new car😂)

noblegiraffe · 24/02/2021 11:43

Why are particles flying across rooms?

This is pretty funny 😂

Is that the level of debate now?

Tisforptarmigan · 24/02/2021 11:46

I think that it is awful.

The sooner we ditch masks the better. Especially for children.

Come on that was still better than the U4T accusations whenever some people disagree 😘

I agree can't wait for them not to have to wear masks. They will review it at Easter bit I think we are probably looking at June.

I am not pro masks. I am pro school being fully open. So whatever that takes.
