Face masks for Secondary Pupils in classrooms

I can’t see this being reported anywhere but the Daily Fail are reporting masks to be worn in Secondary schools for first few weeks back.

Yes I agree. Seems sensible

Robert Peston has tweeted it too. Boris is now speaking in Parliament

ChocOrange1 · 22/02/2021 15:39

This seems like a sensible move, I can't see many people having a problem with this?

Waxonwaxoff0 · 22/02/2021 15:41

Good move. I'm a big believer that children need to be back at school, I think masks will help that. I'd be happy for junior school pupils to wear them too (I have a DS at junior school).

ihearttc · 22/02/2021 15:43

Our school had face masks in all areas of the school, all day apart from when eating since September and had no Covid cases at all.

Truelymadlydeeplysomeonesmum · 22/02/2021 15:43

Would be the most sensible thing to do for now

TinaYouFatLard · 22/02/2021 15:43

I think it’s awful.

TheCatsPjammas · 22/02/2021 15:44

Good.

There will always be people who have a problem with anything that isn't 100% business as usual!

As someone has mentioned on another thread, there may be valid concerns for children who rely on lipreading, but I think they will be a small minority, and hopefully appropriate adjustments can be made for them at a local level.

There will be some children who genuinely can't wear masks, too, and there should be exemptions for them. However, I think there should be some sort of valid reason for exemptions, rather than just allowing people to declare themselves as exempt because they don't fancy it.

TheKeatingFive · 22/02/2021 15:45

A sensible move

the80sweregreat · 22/02/2021 15:45

All schools back on the 8th March.
The PM is talking now. (His hair looks terrible today. )

FaithfullyYours · 22/02/2021 15:45

Very sensible move.

Howshouldibehave · 22/02/2021 15:46

Good-I think all pupils should be wearing them unless there is a valid reason not to. I would count their parent deciding mask wearing is ‘child abuse’-which I have seen written on here-as being not a valid reason.

Agreed!

keiratwiceknightly · 22/02/2021 15:47

What about lip reading teachers like me? I'm not against this btw, but it will make it very very difficult for me to do my job properly...

SionnachRua · 22/02/2021 15:49

Kind of shocked they've had no masks up to now! In Ireland the secondary kids are all masked for lessons (not counting exemptions of course).

manicinsomniac · 22/02/2021 15:50

If it's the way to get everyone back into school then I support it.

It makes my subject very difficult though (performing arts). I have been wearing a mask except when addressing the whole class since October-ish anyway but the children haven't. They will get out of breath when dancing and singing and it will be much harder to be audible and expressive when acting. But it's a whole lot better than being on Teams so I'll take it! I do think it could be quite uncomfortable for them though.

ilovesooty · 22/02/2021 15:50

He hasn't mentioned it in this statement.

Yes, I can see that would be challenging @keiratwiceknightly. Can you talk to the school about what reasonable adjustments could be made? Could the kids remove their masks when answering a question, for example? Not ideal, but better than nothing?

manicinsomniac · 22/02/2021 15:51

keiratwice I only have one hearing impaired student but I had a clear facemask for when I taught that class. Would they be any use to you? You do have to keep taking it off when it steams up though.

ineedaholidaynow · 22/02/2021 15:51

I assume there will be guidance at some point (probably on the 7th March!)

Crappyfridays7 · 22/02/2021 15:51

Scotland did it for ages before Christmas for s4-6 I hadn’t realised elsewhere hadn’t.

@keiratwiceknightly I feel for you, I rely on lip reading too as a nurse I’ve really been struggling, people shout at me too and I’m like shouting doesn’t help me hear you!!

52andblue · 22/02/2021 15:52

It's a sensible move, Covid wise.

BUT for some kids it will make life harder. My Ds has auditory processing disorder - he has to use subtitles on TV for example. But there are no concessions made at school - he just has to muddle along. Now he wont' be able to see the teachers mouth move either.
Yet he will get assessed for his GCSE's like all the NT kids.
Face masks for staff and other pupils in class will just make it harder for him to learn. It is for the greater good, but I'm sad for him.
