I can’t see this being reported anywhere but the Daily Fail are reporting masks to be worn in Secondary schools for first few weeks back.

And once again, the old argument that British children are somehow anatomically different from others. I despair. We are a year into the pandemic and there are still people debating the efficiency of masks, while Fauci is advising double masking.

AlexaShutUp · 22/02/2021 16:20

So my 11 year old will have to wear a mask for 9 hours each day pretty much non stop?

Yes. Your dc will adapt. It is perfectly possible to breathe while wearing a mask.

It isn't accurate to say that there is no evidence that masks provide protection. There is mixed evidence, for and against.

BiggerBoat1 · 22/02/2021 16:21

Good. They should have been wearing masks from the start. I hope its enforced.

QuidditchQueen · 22/02/2021 16:22

@Worldgonecrazy
Completely agree.
Masks are just there to make people feel ‘safer’ no evidential basis.

BiggerBoat1 · 22/02/2021 16:22

@Quit4me

So my 11 year old will have to wear a mask for 9 hours each day pretty much non stop? Sounds hideous to me as I get very short of breath in one. There is no evidence that they even work for the wearer or others in the room
No. Your precious little darling will be able to take it off at break times when outside.
maddy68 · 22/02/2021 16:23

I teach (not in the UK). Masks are compulsory here in schools (and everywhere actually even outdoors). No moaning , everyone gets on with it , no exceptions it genuinely hasn't been a problem. We soon got used to it

KettleWentBang · 22/02/2021 16:23

Ds school had this since Sept. Only allowed off to eat outdoors then back on. Can remove outside of the school premises.
Masks on in and out.

Yes, they will-unless they have a SEND/medical reason that means they are exempt.

I am really pleased with this news, as are my own secondary age kids.

AlexaShutUp · 22/02/2021 16:23

I hope its enforced.

Yes, indeed. But I'm already dreading the slew of threads on here from outraged parents who don't want their precious children to have to make even the tiniest changes in order to protect those around them.

Remmy123 · 22/02/2021 16:24

My son was in a mask - did fuck all!

Unless a new one is given there is little point

Your son will be fine. It's something that people get used to very quickly.(I wear one all day at work). The evidence is mixed about how much they prevent spread, so it's a small sacrifice worth making.
ItsIgginningtolooklikelockdown · 22/02/2021 16:28

A step in the right direction, though not as sensible as a phased return

What do you mean?
poppycat10 · 22/02/2021 16:30

Not massively pleasant to have to wear one for six hours a day (and possibly on bus/train there and back too) but I think most people think it is worth it to get back.

Mumof3cherubs · 22/02/2021 16:30

What about lip reading students?

Won’t know what their friends are saying and won’t know what the teachers saying.

I have to wear one at work, as do many others for longer than that. Needs must at the moment.
Gubanc · 22/02/2021 16:32

I welcome this. I was quite disappointed when my son's school forbade masks in classrooms. It makes so much more sense to have them.

Serendipity79 · 22/02/2021 16:36

My yr 10 had to wear a mask right since October half term when moving around. Could remove them in class once they were sat down though

TinaYouFatLard · 22/02/2021 16:37

You’ve all taken leave of your senses. We’re not just talking about young adults, but 11/12 year olds wearing a mask ALL DAY.

Chimeraforce · 22/02/2021 16:38

Combined with other measures which meant my child spent all breaks ALONE due to segregation, I'll possibly have a school refuser on my hands.

They do it in other countries like France so why not here?
DipSwimSwoosh · 22/02/2021 16:39

OMG no. Poor kids. Makes my subject near impossible too - languages.

itsgettingwierd · 22/02/2021 16:39

I've seen it in Bbc news.

It shouldn't be done in September. I'm glad they are doing it now.

Evvyjb · 22/02/2021 16:40

The 11/12 year olds in my (England) school have been wearing a mask ALL DAY since September @tinayoufatlard. As has everyone else. Every single one.

They've been fine.

I found out what they looked like (and vice versa) when we started teaching through teams!

6-year-olds do it in other countries. Which isn't something I am keen on, but secondary certainly can.
