If they open up schools all at once, I'm done with every other precaution

If the 'leak' is true and they are stupid enough to open up all schools to all kids at the same time (thus leading to uncontrolled transmission of variants and increased risk of vaccine escape, further lockdowns and a redo of the vaccination programme) then I'm done with any kind of compliance.

I'm not staying at home like a fucking stupid sitting duck, waiting for my kids to come home with Covid anymore. The kids can see their friends, have sleepovers and we'll go out and about and visit friends and relatives and do the maximum we can.

You can pile in and call me selfish or whatever - I genuinely don't care anymore. I'm not putting my life on hold just for the government to fuck the recovery up again. I'm the most compliant of pretty much everyone I know but this is it for me, and many others I suspect (most of whom are already doing way more than me). If it's safe for my kids to go to school, then everything is safe.

I agree with you 100%
But first, let's wait for the announcement.

MrsHamlet · 21/02/2021 23:27

Yep. If it's safe for me to be back to 32 teens for two hours at a time unmasked in a poorly ventilated room, why is it not safe for me to have a hair cut?

lughnasadh · 21/02/2021 23:27

Isn't that what the government want? The most vulnerable will have been vaccinated by then, and so the NHS will be fine.

The low capacity of health care systems was the poi t of lockdown.
Covid is harmless to the vast majority.

The personal health risk to anyone else is minimal, even with new varients. Unless you think it will mutate into haemorrhagic fever or something.

MummaPI · 21/02/2021 23:28

Do you know what, I agree. If I'm expected to go into a classroom where nothing has been made safer then I might as well get out and about if its so bloody safe everywhere!
Sadly as for the announcement, the papers tend to get it right.

everythingisstillginandroses · 21/02/2021 23:29

The government is fucking useless. As soon as they start telling me something is 'safe' I ignore them. We need to take care of ourselves and each other, as Jerry Springer would say. It has been this way from the start.

manicinsomniac · 21/02/2021 23:31

I really don't think that's a sensible idea.

I think the govt know it's a risky strategy and will lead to increased transmission and that's the reason why almost nothing else is being opened up. They are choosing to sacrifice literally everyone and everything else to allow children the chance to go back. That suits me fine because I'm a teacher and I have children so I basically get the majority of my life back again. But if I were a childless work from homer or a SAHM with a toddler and a baby or a pub landlord or an actor etc I would be really frustrated and upset by the decisions. Obviously I think children and education are vitally important - but to the exclusion of everyone and everything else? Not sure.

But the increased transmission it will cause will only be at a manageable level if schools are the only change. If we all say 'fuck it' in addition to opening schools, that is when we really will be in trouble. I am not a numbers expert. But it looks to me like things are really positive and there is room for some relaxation. They've chosen to give all that relaxation to schools (so it seems - I don't actually think it will end up happening; I think unions or someone else will stop it)

Ledkr · 21/02/2021 23:32

Yep me too. Our class sizes get bigger every week and i was actually sneezed on before half term so really just feel its a matter of time. Thats as well as the dds bringing it back from their schools and uni.

BettyBoomerang · 21/02/2021 23:32

Well it could just mutate out of us being in a situation where the most vulnerable are vaccinated I suppose.

But if they think schools are safe, then me going for coffee with the rest of the mums at the school gates won't make a difference.

This isn’t how it works. We can afford a certain level of transmission for hospitals not to be overwhelmed. We cannot afford a greater level of transmission. Opening schools will produce a certain level of transmission, which is projected not to overwhelm hospitals. That doesn’t mean we can go off and do other stuff which will raise transmission further.

But I think you know that.

BettyBoomerang · 21/02/2021 23:37

Honestly I'll only be doing what all the other parents are doing anyway. I've been the boring, sensible one for long enough now. All that happens is my kids miss out on the fun and socialising and then we end up back in lockdown anyway. I don't trust their 'careful calculations' or whatever bullshit. The situation in schools was completely out of control and ignored and gaslighted for weeks. My god they even tried to sue a council that was shutting down schools because of the variant! You think they've got this worked out carefully?! Nope. They haven't got a clue. But I'm not sitting at home watching it all pan out this time.

Now if you were In scotland you would have heard our esteemed leader tell us not to stand and chat with other parents

Parents must behave in order to protect schools staying open..

Mockolate · 21/02/2021 23:39

Children need to go back to school though for their mental well being.
Mine does anyway.
Was coping just fine last year but this time round the lack of school and contact with people is starting to really affect.

BettyBoomerang · 21/02/2021 23:40

All the parents are the same people whose kids are mixing in school anyway, so why not chat at the gates? No logic in it at all. Does it somehow spread more in the open air than from kids sitting elbow to elbow for hours?! I'm not prepare to be gaslit anymore, frankly. And also, if Covid is coming into my home then it may as well be through having fun and making our own decisions, rather than sitting around with my fingers crossed and leaving it up to fate and bloody Boris.

HazeyJaneII · 21/02/2021 23:41

They have announced it on the news, so I can't imagine it will be wrong.

Yes of course it's selfish, unbelievably so.

Unfortunately I think there will be a lot of selfish people to keep you company.

I assume this is anecdotal?

Oh I see, you’re planning to ignore the rules because you’re having a tantrum about schools opening. Not because you genuinely think it’s “safe”.

Thought so.

MrsHamlet · 21/02/2021 23:45

The OP is not "having a tantrum". Don't be so rude.

We need to start getting out of this.
Children have had about 4 months of schooling in the past 12 months.
Exams cancelled.
Not being able to meet up with friends/go to their usual clubs whether it be football or Scouts/Guides or whatever.
Months at home with just the parents and siblings.
I can see why they need to start getting back, even though I'd be happy to have mine at home school for even longer.
It's not just about me though.

I'm not prepare to be gaslit anymore, frankly

Hmm
BettyBoomerang · 21/02/2021 23:46

I genuinely don't care who thinks I'm selfish. I've had a year of being so so considerate. I'm not sitting at home while my kids are in classrooms of 30. That's just stupid. I just feel like a light has gone on! I'm not playing anymore.

It is not safe. It is shit. My child is upset because school is just horrible in this semi SD state, so many rules and no sociability.. He is crying his eyes out about going back. Shitshow.

Mockolate · 21/02/2021 23:46

"All?"
