Vaccine Envy

Anybody starting to feel ltwinges of the green eyed monster?
On the one hand I'm pleased that even more vulnerable people have suddenly been added the list, theres clearly a need for it, but secretly im a little bit disappointed that it now means it could be months before I get my get Get of jail free card.
I know it's not nice to feel this way but I can't help it.
I'd.never say anything irl.

For those saying having the vaccination won’t make much difference, for anyone feeling anxious the vaccination will mean so much. I’m fairly low risk but struggle with anxiety and have school age children. The sense of relief I will have when I’ve had my vaccination will be huge as it means I’ll be at a lower risk of serious illness and death. For me it won’t be about freedom so much as being released from the intense worry involved with every small decision.

WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 17/02/2021 16:48

@zafferana

I agree that opticians SHOULD be a priority along with anyone on the medical front-line who is having to get close up to people's faces to treat them. People working in NHS back offices though and particularly those working from home should not be getting priority jabs - yet they are.
Because, as has been explained, it's just practical to allow all NHS staff have it, assessing each job would be far too time/resource consuming.
WitchesBritchesPumpkinPants · 17/02/2021 16:51

@SchrodingersUnicorn

The thing about not vaccinating police and teachers that gets me is they say the reason care staff are vaccinated is to protect their patients. Fair enough, although we don't know all the vaccines stop transmission, it's worth a go.

So why are admin staff wfh home getting it? Social workers working with kids not vulnerable adults?

Oh well their work is important.

Right, so you're saying other people's work (ie teachers and police in this instance) isn't important?

Oh, no, but teachers and police are less at risk of dying.

Actually, they aren't. Latest data shows female secondary school teachers have the same death rates as female health and social care workers. Which is higher than vision express and admin staff!

It's a circular non-sensical argument.

Have you read the JCVI document? It's really quite interesting & explains the reasoning really well.
andannabegins · 17/02/2021 16:54

I've had my first jab today, no health concerns (I have asthma but don't need a daily inhaler) I haven't had covid thankfully but have no idea why my name came up! I still jumped at the chance to have the jab and was oddly emotional about it. I see it as the first step to getting back to some form of normality, I hope the vaccines carry on with the speed they are currently

Rockbird · 17/02/2021 17:05

I know what you mean Wombat. I'm checking my phone constantly and it's doing my head in. My GP said that letters should have been received and I haven't had one so that means that I've been pushed down the group 6 list. I also work in a school and my anxiety has rocketed. The fear has completely taken over my life.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 17/02/2021 17:13

I will admit to feeling some envy too. And although this isn't a get out of jail card yet I would like to know I have a better chance if I catch Covid than I do now.

Clearly that doesn't stop me being pleased as I see people around me getting the jab. It all helps in a collective manor to help us be safe.

I should be in Grouo 6 (carer for my son) but I have no way of knowing if I definitely am (the GP say not to contact them and I don't want to be that person!) and the GP website are saying they have discretion in the order of Group Six - I would feel happier if there was a clear timescale but completely understand everyone is busy/doing an amazing job.

I have friends who are group six and getting their jab already.

A bit of kindness to those that are really anxious would be nice and an understanding that one can have private thoughts of envy while be nice and supportive of others.

NeverDropYourMoonCup · 17/02/2021 17:14

@likeamillpond

I really don't understand why teachers aren't getting the Vaccine? Why aren't they prioritized? It's madness.

I'm not a teacher, I just don't understand why they are left out when for instance, someone working for example at Vision Express is given the jab.
(If that's to be believed)

Working at Vision Express means working with the elderly and vulnerable as well as fit and well for sight tests, measuring for glasses prescriptions, glaucoma checks, possibly hearing aids if they do those there - in some areas, what we would think of as opticians handle all hearing aids and tests for the NHS, possibly visiting elderly/infirm customers/patients in their homes/residential care settings or working with staff who do.

Yes, they should be vaccinated.

poppycat10 · 17/02/2021 17:21

I won't get vaccine envy as long as vaccine passports aren't introduced.

I'll be annoyed if I am not allowed to do things because I've not been vaccinated yet (not because I've refused a vaccine).

I dread vaccine passports being introduced. So much for getting rid of queues. I won't be queuing to get into pubs or shops, I just won't go. After all I've managed for the past year without non-essential shops being open for much of the time.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 17/02/2021 17:24

Yes @poppycat10 that would be very unfair to have vaccine passports when not everyone has been given the chance for a vaccine! I really don't think it will happen though which is good.

abc31 · 17/02/2021 18:08

I am pleased for everyone that has been vaccinated (nor do I mind if the over 70s etc get to go on holiday this summer with vaccine passports).

Because I'm mid to late 40s, I admit to feeling a little envious of friends and family who are in their early 50s getting it soon. Partly due to the possibility of vaccine passports. But our turn will come.

EarlGreywithLemon · 17/02/2021 21:25

You should call your GP to check, just in case. I think they mean you shouldn’t call to ask when your turn is coming (i.e. “I know I’m group 6, when am I getting called?”), but fine to call to check if you’ve been put in the correct category!

EarlGreywithLemon · 17/02/2021 21:27

Sorry, that was meant for TheGoodEnoughWife. Wouldn’t let me quote for some reason.

TheGoodEnoughWife · 17/02/2021 21:33

@EarlGreywithLemon Thank you, I have a call Friday with a GP about something else so am going to try and work it into the conversation!

EarlGreywithLemon · 17/02/2021 21:42

@TheGoodEnoughWife definitely do, and fingers crossed. If there’s an error and for some reason they don’t have you down as group 6, they’ll correct it.

StCharlotte · 18/02/2021 13:19

I had the text just now (group 6) and burst into tears which surprised me as I thought I was quite relaxed about it. Obviously a lot of pent up emotion there!
RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 18/02/2021 13:33

I have been rather surprised by that.

I'm not sure why it's a surprise. The media going on about how doing fun things will require a 'vaccine passport' (whether these are realistic or not), companies like Saga suddenly advertising cruises for those who have had a vaccine, media talking about foreign holidays probably going to require vaccine passports.

All those things are completely fine to feel envious about if say you're in your 30s, in a job where you are 'key' (but not key enough to be considered critical enough for a vaccine), and have been out at work throughout in potentially risky situations. Your kids have been out at school the whole time too... and you aren't going to get a vaccine any time soon.

You'd be totally justified in feeling envious of a speech therapist who hasn't left the house since last March getting a vaccine, or a social worker who has been working from home since last March getting a vaccine, or a SAHM who happens to be married to a GP getting a 'left over' vaccine, or NHS admin staff who WFH getting vaccines.

Doesn't mean you don't understand that the more people that have it, the better, it just means that these folk, some who are arguably less deserving that you, are going to be off having 'fun' before you are. Even though you've been working throughout.

FebFrosting · 18/02/2021 14:42

I am a bit jealous of groups 7-9 being vaccinated and no news of a Group 6 vaccine and the news that schools may return as I work in a SEN school, the thought of full schools with no vaccine does not appeal.
I had hoped group 6 vaccine may happen this week.
Need to stop reading Mums etc and reading “ oh I just rang my Gp, and happened to get a vaccination the next day or a spare” when my Gp practice has no spare list and will not share any information to reduce anxiety. Am able to get diazepam on repeat with no contact with medical staff as they are too busy which is helping.

Lemons1571 · 18/02/2021 15:35

I’m scared for my DH, late 40’s, slightly obese, works in a school with no mitigations apart from some tape at the front of the classroom. The fact that there is now a hospital bed and ventilator available and ready for him is really not making me feel it’s all ok.

jenkel · 18/02/2021 15:54

A bit, though I do understand the reasons, I am actually quite scared of getting covid, have health anxiety anyway and the situation at the moment just feeds it. I work in a primary school and have been all along, though for lower numbers of kids, dh is working from home but has underlying health conditions. We are both in our 50’s, no sign so far of any vaccination for him, I expect to have to wait a while, following the rules religiously and will continue to do so but would be lovely to take away some of the anxiety. My sil however works from home, is in her late 30s, no underlying health issues, but works for a counselling charity and has had hers, she is continuing to work from home.

I am hearing of increasing numbers of people like this. I don’t want to go back to a work environment where there is no social distancing, no masks and no chance of a vaccine for months, when there are people WFH who are getting vaccinated now, through virtue of their job.

FebFrosting · 18/02/2021 17:43

Counsellors, OT’s, music therapists etc are in the health and social care group, and it does not matter if working from home they are eligible.

No, but it is an improvement in the situation compared to when I contracted Covid from being sent a sick child (multiple, really, the teaching staff couldn't get them out of their rooms and into mine for me to deal with them quick enough, tbh) to look after until collection and I couldn't even get through to the NHS by phone or internet, much less access treatment.

(also late 40s, obese, worked in a school with no mitigations at all at the time of contracting it)

VicarofDibley · 18/02/2021 21:14

I would rather be fit and healthy and not cev because of severe asthma. I am shielding, not at work, staying in .Feel incredibly guilty because I am not at work. Nope nothing to be jealous of here .

jenkel · 19/02/2021 00:29

I’m a teacher in my 50s I have worked in a school throughout, why is my younger sil who works from home and is continuing to work from home but works in a counselling charity more entitled to me.

BettyBoomerang · 19/02/2021 01:13

It is starting to get a bit sickening to be honest.

My partner is in his 50s and diabetic and a teacher. No sign of a vaccine yet.

My SIL is a stay at home mum who is registered with her GP as a 'front line worker' because that's what she told them when she moved there 6 months ago, because she used to be a speech therapist about 2 years ago pre kids. She's had her vaccine and is very gleeful about it.

And tbh, even though I'm in my 40s and healthy (apart from a bit chubby), I would like mine too. It's been a long, hard year of doing everything to protect other people and I feel like I'm reaching the end of my rope now, and would like a little bit of protection for me too.
