Workout to help out

I have been thinking about the government scheme I'd eat out to help out and believe that if the same funding was put into healthy activities, grass roots sports, gyms, dance and theatre then people would end up happier and healthier and the sectors would get a well needed boost.

We would build home grown talent, instead of eat out to help out which has little health benefits for great risk.

Any thoughts?

I would agree with you.

A healthier lifestyle should be encouraged and even subsidised.

nowbringmethathorizon · 15/02/2021 20:07

I like the sound of it!

Ylvamoon · 15/02/2021 20:09

Sounds fantastic! Just not sure how popular it would be in RL

ThatDamnKrampus · 15/02/2021 20:09

I think that sounds like a brilliant idea. I did take advantage of the eat out scheme but I would much prefer workout to help out.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 15/02/2021 20:11

If I got a 50% off gym membership I'd definitely use it! I think it's a good idea and loads of us will want to lose weight after lockdown.

IceCreamAndCandyfloss · 15/02/2021 20:13

A far better use of money than encouraging people to eat and drink out imo so I agree OP.

Many have lost sight of a what a healthy weight and diet look like hence children are now weighed in schools and letters sent to parents.

udnertheradar · 15/02/2021 20:16

That is such a great idea!

DrunkenKoala · 15/02/2021 20:18

It would get my backing.

bjjgirl · 15/02/2021 20:21

I just think that tackling mental health, confidence and lack of exercise should be a priority but these sectors have been crucified with lockdown.

I reckon that could work. Government subsided workout classes or PT. Works the same as eat out to help out. Nice. I'd do it.

Katie517 · 15/02/2021 20:22

Great idea but unfortunately too many people in this country view exercise as optional and not a fundamental part of life. I need to incentive to get back to the gym I would go tonight if they opened it but it might encourage some more people to take up exercise.

bjjgirl · 15/02/2021 20:22

It doesn't have to be super sporty but can include walking, yoga, musical theatre, dance etc

It would help young people too and children

Theunamedcat · 15/02/2021 20:23

I already have a gym membership i cannot use due to covid

DollyMixtureLulus · 15/02/2021 20:25

Oh I'm up for this!

FTMF30 · 15/02/2021 20:26

Great idea OP. I would love to see this happen. Locking us down, restricting social interaction and then encouraging us to eat out, has not been a sustainable or sensible solution. We're being ushered into poor mental and physical health.

bjjgirl · 15/02/2021 20:27

It potentially would reduce crime and deter young people getting involved with crime, getting them in a sports club

DianaT1969 · 15/02/2021 20:30

Great idea. Imagine if we all had two months of free classes and memberships after this. I'd love to go to yoga or pilates every day.

lunapeace · 15/02/2021 20:31

Good idea but it's far too sensible. In my area, we have the outdoor gyms cordoned off, they have even closed the gates to the basketball outdoor area but the high street is full of opened takeaways selling all kinds of s&@t!

bjjgirl · 15/02/2021 20:33

Imagine if each child could partake in a sport of their choice and have up to x amount funded? Which could be topped up?

Imagine reenergised bowling greens, athletic tracks, out door pools, football training

reefedsail · 15/02/2021 20:36

It would be amazing if there was some sort of grant towards personal activity- like the funding for early years education- redeemable to a certain value in any active setting.

Eccle80 · 15/02/2021 20:36

I agree with you, I would like to see gyms and pools as a priority in reopening after schools, and a scheme to encourage people to get back to exercise would be great. Lots of people have gained weight in the last year (me included!) and lost fitness

Delatron · 15/02/2021 20:37

I would love this! So good for the nation.

It drives me crazy we have an athletics track standing empty near us. They could just allow families to book half an hour sessions.

Oneweekleft · 15/02/2021 20:37

Sounds great !

ComtesseDeSpair · 15/02/2021 21:02

All for it, would love a reduction on the gym membership I already pay for! Though not convinced it would be that successful, tbh. There are already plenty of cheap or free methods of exercise people could do but generally don’t - including council-run gyms and health facilities which aren’t exactly budget breakers. Many GPs have tried “social prescribing” but take up is generally poor. Most people cite lack of time or lack of confidence as barriers to engagement; and frankly, laziness is probably the largest but unacknowledged reason. I expect it would be like joining the gym in January, loads of people would buy new workout clothes and go for a couple of weeks and then taper off after that.

CovoidOfAllHumanity · 15/02/2021 21:07

Great idea.
We sorely need to try to reverse the ill effects of lockdown.
