Workout to help out

I have been thinking about the government scheme I'd eat out to help out and believe that if the same funding was put into healthy activities, grass roots sports, gyms, dance and theatre then people would end up happier and healthier and the sectors would get a well needed boost.

We would build home grown talent, instead of eat out to help out which has little health benefits for great risk.

Any thoughts?

I know the owner of my gym quite well because I've been going ever since it opened and I know he is really worried. They have lost loads of members in lockdown. I have kept paying because I can afford it and to help him and they are doing online classes etc but I know not everyone can do that and he is terrified that they won't be able to stay afloat. The increased costs of the cleaning and cleaning supplies and the reduced numbers due to SD have to be factored in too.

I know he is hoping demand will bounce back when they are allowed to open but I don't think he'd be unhappy with a government scheme to help that.

There are going to be lots of fitness qualified people out of work and if the government put some incentives in place for running community classes etc then I bet there would be loads of people up for running them and going to them.

@nancy75

How long did they reduce membership for? Was it just while they were closed or very restricted opening?
I meant they reduced it once they re opened and it's still at the reduced rate now. They kept a full 40 class online timetable running through lockdown (and have been doing the same again with subsequent lockdowns) so it was as a thank you to the members who had kept their memberships going and carried on doing classes from home.

A really good idea and think.how much.iy would save NHS as less obesity related illnesses.

Andorra155 · 16/02/2021 10:13

I think this is a great idea especially for children.

FlowersAreBeautiful · 16/02/2021 10:20

Great idea I'd definitely use it. Give other leisure activities a chance to make some money back rather than food and drink

@Frouby I think how well schools deliver it varies, and the focus is on swimming a length rather than proper stroke technique, this is info about it www.swimming.org/schools/swimming-national-curriculum/
When mine went with school they were split into 4 groups by ability, but from a technique point of view it hindered my middle son as he said his school teacher was telling him to make his arms bigger in breaststroke, whilst in his non school lessons he was being told they were too big!
I agree though I would love to see regular swimming lessons throughout school. My eldest is now at a school where they have an on-site pool and in normal times have weekly lessons with qualified swimming teachers. It would be great if all schools could offer that, for schools without pools I think it is often the cost of getting them there that is a factor

Svrider · 16/02/2021 10:52

I would love to take the kids swimming more often.
It currently costs over £20 per session to take all 3 children
I would definitely use the (council owned ) pool more often, if it was cheaper

nancy75 · 16/02/2021 11:11

To have a positive impact for kids the money would be much better going in to schools to allow them to bring in proper coaches for after school sports clubs - every child could benefit from that.

bjjgirl · 16/02/2021 12:32

I think it's about all society not just kids, change is so impactive if a child sees it's parents engaging, plus not everyone has or cares about children, so it should benefit all
