Hi,

I am just wondering who is remaining hopeful after the news hot off the press in regards to foreign travel this summer?

Have people been booking holidays for Summer 2021 or are people pushing their plans of a enjoying a lovely margarita on a hot beach somewhere until 2022?

Thanks! xo

Not hopeful at all. Even if they are permitted, we won't be able to justify the additional cost of testing that will be required no doubt to leave the country and on return.

Lissy23 · 10/02/2021 11:06

Hoping for a couple of UK breaks.

pommedeterre · 10/02/2021 11:09

Have booked some two UK self catering breaks in June and July.

Not planning family holiday travel abroad until 2022 at the earliest. Hoping to be able to resume work travel before that though.

I don’t feel hopeful at all either! There seems to be so many hoops to jump through that it doesn’t feel justified to book a holiday as it would be more stressful than a staycation which I think will definitely be on the cards for us!

Sounds lovely! I bet staycations are booking up fast! May have to get my reservation in soon to guarantee at least one getaway this year!

I think there will be testing costs at each end which will just put the cost out of most people's reach.

If people allowed to travel between England and Scotland then we'd have someone to look after DS14 then DH and I might attempt something abroad for a few days depending on circumstances at the time, but at the moment I'm resigning myself to UK only and worst case scenario Scotland only.

User7458 · 10/02/2021 11:24

No, it would be so stressful worrying about quarantine hotels and stuff like that which could happen at the drop of a hat if they did go ahead, many won't want to go anyway, I wouldn't, we have just booked in UK

ineedaholidayandwine · 10/02/2021 11:24

I'm trying to be hopeful for August and will happily pay for testing if needed to allow

TimeForLunch · 10/02/2021 11:25

I think it will be made extremely difficult to travel abroad but those who can afford both the extra costs involved and time to spend isolating upon return will be able to do so.

AlecTrevelyan006 · 10/02/2021 11:27

regardless of vaccines and variants, cases will drop once the weather picks up so we should be allowed to on holiday, in the UK at the very least

Katie517 · 10/02/2021 11:27

Hopeful, Boris is flying people from all over the world to Cornwall for the G7 in June so I can’t see them being allowed to go and we can’t even visit Cornwall ourselves. I’d say I’m 99% certain on UK breaks about 70% in abroad after July. The situation is better than last year people just need to keep remembering that. Variants have always been there we have only just started looking for them and vaccines are still proving to be effective at prevent serious illness and death which is all we need them to do.

User7458 · 10/02/2021 11:29

The extra cost would probably be ok on an expensive holiday for 2 or 3 weeks but it's the death knell for a cheap week in Europe

I agree the situation is better but I think the government seem keen to not repeat last years mistakes. They seem to be more cautious about travel this time in an effort to keep out new strains so I'm no so sure what they'll do.

Well so far I’ve cancelled four holidays from last year up until Feb this year. I’ve got four booked rest of this year, I would absolutely LOVE to go away this year at least once, who knows. Fingers crossed but realistic at the same time, the only shred of hope is we played safe and booked UK trips this year.

Have booked UK for summer and abroad for November

OpenShop · 10/02/2021 11:34

Staycation for our family this year. We're going to the Isle of Wight, self catering in a caravan park. I will tell the kids it's a different country (they're only little!)

I honestly think it's not worth the potential hassle of booking anything abroad. Right now so much could change at the last minute. I think that will pretty much apply all year. Perhaps next year will be a bit different in regards to holidays abroad.

MarshaBradyo · 10/02/2021 11:35

I can’t see why U.K. based would be as much of an issue

Just going on variant issue

felineflutter · 10/02/2021 11:39

I can't see how UK holidays will go ahead.

Do you think the Welsh and the Scots will let us in!

This talk of new variants is to prime us that holiday may not happen at all this year.

Why would undo all the work we've put in? Schools need to return first. We will not be able to open everything up at once that would be ridiculous.

OpenShop · 10/02/2021 11:41

I do think (hope) that UK holidays will be permitted? If not that's going to be crap indeed

Spiratedaway · 10/02/2021 11:41

My friend is in tears as her travel company she spent years building is about to go bust all virus's mutate

WhiteChocTwix · 10/02/2021 11:41

We have some foreign travel booked for this year. I'm always hopeful for it going ahead, but between prohibitive testing costs, threat of possible hotel quarantine, and not knowing if the various countries will let Brits in or not, I've got no idea if they'll go ahead or not. If circumstances align I will defo be on the plane! We travelled abroad last year when it was allowed and I was glad we did. Otherwise I intend to spend the summer in the garden with a glass of wine and a good book!

Lollipop1234 · 10/02/2021 11:42

We’ve booked a week in Cornwall and may try another week over here.

Our April holiday abroad cancelled from this year is obviously going to be cancelled again so we’ll hope for better luck next year.

There’s no way I’d risk booking for abroad this year. I wouldn’t want to incur the expense of tests and possible quarantine hotel which could be sprung on people at short notice like quarantine was last summer.

Anyone who books abroad anywhere should be prepared that this is a possibility and have funds available if needed to cover it.

Delatron · 10/02/2021 11:47

Booked a short U.K. trip for July. I think in a few months we’ll be in a different situation. Once death rates are low, hospitalisations are low then they’ll struggle to justify hammering the economy even more. They are just being tough at the moment so people comply.

They don’t want to give false hope like they have been doing all year as that has backfired many times.

Of course they won’t be saying right now that summer will be fine because they don’t know. But we’ll know more in a month or so as to the effect the vaccines are having.

There’s as much reason to be optimistic as pessimistic because nobody knows. I’m choosing to be optimistic plus I can see through all the media spin and the current narrative they are feeding us (fear).

Delatron · 10/02/2021 11:50

And yes all viruses mutate. It would have been more surprising if this one hadn’t. Do you think all the scientists and vaccine makers are shocked?

People need to be a bit more questioning...
‘Mutant variants everywhere’ is the current narrative...to make you comply. Because many have lockdown fatigue. There’s a lot of behavioural science going on behind the scenes...

noodlmcdoodl · 10/02/2021 13:53

It looked pretty bleak for hols last year, then things improved and international travel for leisure became possible again. So I’m hopeful about this year. To some extent it’s about being flexible eg last year I re-booked several times before we actually went. We have a motorhome though and my employer was fairly flexible about me changing my dates. The ferry company were flexible with our ferry booking. Prior to that we backpacked or cycle toured abroad (departing and arriving via ferry). Again that was super flexible, just dependent on annual leave and adjusting ferry bookings. I can’t imagine many people have such a nomadic holiday though. We also save a lot of money as we wild camp (France, Spain etc very setup and welcoming of this) and self cater so could stretch to paying for tests.

It’ll be interesting how this is all worked regarding land borders. Eg it’s easy to arrive at Calais, France not get out your vehicle and head straight to an onward destination of Germany, Netherlands or Belgium. So Germany might have more stringent restrictions to those arriving from the U.K., which is easy to manage when people fly in, but impossible when people come in via land borders.

I’ll also be super intrigued to see how the government manages arrivals coming via ports (if the hotel quarantine is still a thing). How on earth will all the incoming cars, caravans, motorhomes and coaches be escorted into hotel quarantine?! Some form of safe/ secure parking facility would have to be provided for the duration of the quarantine.
