Hi,

I am just wondering who is remaining hopeful after the news hot off the press in regards to foreign travel this summer?

Have people been booking holidays for Summer 2021 or are people pushing their plans of a enjoying a lovely margarita on a hot beach somewhere until 2022?

Thanks! xo

We’ve booked but we’re not hopeful. Under current rules it will cost a lot more to get all the tests etc that are required than the cost of the actual holiday. It can all be cancelled without losing a great deal though so we’ll see what the situation is closer to the time.
Tbh I’ll be thrilled if we can just go and stay with my brother and his family for a few days.

marieantoinehairnet · 10/02/2021 14:01

Well Shapps has just said forget holidays this year... home or away, this is completely contradictory to what Hancock has said, given he's booked his to Cornwall.

They can't keep us locked up like this forever, it's ridiculous.

Baamoooink · 10/02/2021 14:01

Was hoping to go to France end of the August, but can’t afford time to quarantine due to work, so have ditched that idea, and booked a cheapish UK break. Will then use the money I’ve saved towards a nicer abroad holiday when there aren’t all these restrictions in future years.

Our holiday to Greece was cancelled last year and rebooked for this June so I'm being hopeful that we'll be able to go. Happy to pay the extra for testing and my OH will have had both vaccines by then (I will only have had one of mine) - keeping fingers crossed.

Happy to quarantine when we get home but hopefully at home not at Travelodge Gatwick :)

Delatron · 10/02/2021 14:05

They probably want to keep all availability to themselves...
Considering they changed their minds over Christmas at the last minute. That the schools went back for one day before the last minute closure, I think it’s safe to say anything could be happening in four months time....

tinytemper66 · 10/02/2021 14:12

Our holiday is a rebook from last summer. If we dont go then I will just cancel it and not rebook for next year. I would like to visit London to see family. That is my goal that is keeping me going. If I end up in Sorrento great if I dont then it is was it is. I don`t think I could afford to have the tests before and after as the cost of the holiday went up considerably PP when I rebooked.

User133847 · 10/02/2021 14:20

They should keep the borders closed this year. Did they learn nothing from last summer?

This is how variants spread and the vaccines become ineffective.

Phyzzy · 10/02/2021 16:33

I don't believe there will be overseas travel for holidays this year. Even if we get the population vaccinated and even if we all paid out for umpteen covid tests there will still be two big obstacles. One is the possibility of importing variants and the other that no-one seems to mention is that other countries probably won't allow tourists in anyway. It's highly unlikely that Italy, Spain, Greece or wherever will have managed full vaccination this year.

I've booked four short UK breaks. I would normally have gone abroad at least twice. If it goes ahead it will help our poor economy if we all spend our money in the UK. I will still miss the sunshine

Vargas · 10/02/2021 16:41

I've booked Cornwall, can't wait! I won't book abroad until things are a bit more settled. Although my newly adult ds has booked a holiday in Spain....

BiddyPop · 10/02/2021 16:43

we have a booking for DD to go to a specialised sports camp on the European continent in July, with the plan that DH and I would go to an apartment in that city for a week ourselves. We have already cancelled that plan from last summer.

At the moment, the only thing booked is the camp itself - we haven't booked flights or our accommodation yet as we are very uncertain that it will happen.

We think what will actually happen is a variation on last year - a week (maybe 2) on the west coast here, just away from our house.

PinotNoisette · 10/02/2021 17:11

Booked to go away in the UK in June but not at all sure we'll actually get to go. Would love to visit family abroad this summer but at this point seems best to assume we can't. Have made my peace with it really, although DP keeps bringing it up and wants to book flights.

ShaunaTheSheep · 10/02/2021 17:24

As a family we have too much uncertainty around school, exams, uni, vacation jobs, vaccinations etc to book anything. UK cottage prices are astronomical too - £1700 for a week, no thank you.

I’ve ordered new patio furniture instead.

Hollanda40 · 10/02/2021 18:07

No holidays overnight anywhere I can see happening. Firstly until hospitality and shops open what is there to DO? No, just a walk round parks without freezing is good enough for me and SD seeing family and friends. Even outdoor coffee would be a godsend!!

snowydaysandholidays · 10/02/2021 19:24

I have overseas holidays booked, and UK breaks now too.
I am not expecting to go overseas, esp not after the press release today telling us all not to book anything.

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 10/02/2021 19:26

Overseas : not hopeful at all
UK : pretty hopeful

snowydaysandholidays · 10/02/2021 19:27

UK holidays will go ahead I am sure. We can't afford to lose another whole year. I am confident we can holiday here, but I think group holidays/mixed household breaks will not be allowed.

MarshaBradyo · 10/02/2021 19:28

At least if U.K. go ahead some of the lost o/s tourist income will come in. It’ll probably be really busy if it does go ahead ok.

Justa47 · 10/02/2021 19:32

@Lexmerrie

Book a flight to where you want.
You can get refund.
Book all else later.
You can always camp.
And take the gear!

Or just give it up! And get a new bbq!!

Hollanda40 · 10/02/2021 19:33

Unless hospitality opens up nobody can really book anywhere in the UK. It's going to probably be a while before overnight stays allowed anywhere. Possibly after that who knows???

MNnicknameforCVthreads · 10/02/2021 19:37

Why does hospitality have to open up or do you include campsites and holiday cottages within hospitality?
snowydaysandholidays · 10/02/2021 19:38

Umm, everywhere is already booked holland you can book easily on line or on the phone. Most hotel reservation departments are open!

We have all booked or most of us! Easter is the best guess for hospitality reopening in full...

HairyToity · 10/02/2021 19:41

We've not been abroad since 2012. We have booked a cottage in Devon for August. There is a pool on site and adventure playground. I was going to leave it till nearer the time, but thought better book early in case everything gets booked up.

earsup · 10/02/2021 19:44

Hoping for Turkey in either Sept or Oct as cancelled 3 times last year...its not a holiday its for the dentist....but am desperate to get away...lost bookings to taiwan, vietnam, spain, slovenia and ireland...was gonna spend some of my pension lump sum and have a treat...all refunded fast tho....

TalskiddyTreacleMiner · 10/02/2021 19:45

I'm in Cornwall and work in domestic travel so if UK holidays don't go ahead that's it, we're over. Don't think our business can sustain this for another year. They'll be many in a similar position to us too. I've also got an overseas holiday booked in October, moved from last October to this May, then I recently moved it again. I'm not hopeful tbh.

GreenWheat · 10/02/2021 19:48

Booked a detached cottage in the UK for August and I feel reasonably confident that we will be able to go. We don't have to pay the balance for ages yet anyway so plenty of time for the situation to clarify. I would rather have something nice booked and cancel than only book with the rush and be stuck with rubbish accommodation.
