I thought vaccines were our way out??

Why are we introducing travel restrictions now? And why are we being told things won't be back to normal by the summer/not to book any holidays abroad?

I thought the vaccines were our way out of this mess?

What needs to happen to get us back to normal? I thought once hospitalisation numbers are greatly reduce and the NHS can cope then that's that?!! We were never perusing a zero transmission policy, we were pursuing a don't-overwhelm-the-NHS-policy, or am I missing something?

@SpringtimeBluebells

To someone up thread doubting the Oxford AZ vaccine the World Health Organisation today announces they recommend it..... I rather take their word than Joe blogs from MN or Pete the gardener from social media who has done his own 'research....Hmm
Star 👏

@AvocadosBeforeMortgages

You're not missing anything. They're changing the goalposts.

If this is how they behave, I don't think things will EVER go back to normal. There will come a point where, even if they remove restrictions, the vast majority of the pubs, restaurants, shops, festival organisers, wedding businesses and so on will have gone bust. They won't be there to visit even if we're allowed to go.

Because of course what the rich and powerful want more than anything is to destroy all they own and control....... There can't possibly be sensible reasons for preventing the spread of a disease?

@Beaniecats

Control There will always be a new variant Did you not realise this was an opportunity for the government to remove civil liberties and freedoms??
Are you being serious? If so, why are the government using this as an opportunity? Why would a conservative government want to remove civil liberties and freedoms?
Beaniecats · 10/02/2021 21:56

I genuinely don't know but they clearly do

Villanelle17 · 10/02/2021 21:57

viruses always mutate so what's going to happen when a new strain appears? We lock down again till everyone is vaccinated. It's just not doable. Especially not for everyone. I'm guessing it will end up like flu where they have to predict which strains they think will be most prominent that winter and give the elderly and extremely vulnerable yearly vaccinations.

RedcurrantPuff · 10/02/2021 22:05

The timing of the progression of this last year certainly seems like this and j can see why many people are thinking this.
Every hope is crushed, just at the right moment.
They bring you up, they crush you back down. Time and time again.
For such a ‘random’ virus it sure is predictable now

Yep

“Oh the plebs are starting to get a bit blasé now we have the vaccines, better over egg it with tales of some ‘new variant’ to keep them complying with the rules”

Honestly such predictable bullshit.

TheSockMonster · 10/02/2021 22:09

The Vaccines Minister has said there will most likely be an autumn booster which will cover the new variations, followed by a rolling annual vaccination drive, possibly delivered in tandem with the flu jab.

bumblingbovine49 · 10/02/2021 22:18
  1. As explained the more the virus spreads the more opportunities for more mutations and one of those might evade the vaccine completely and/.or become more virulent. So we need numbers to be at low as possible while we vaccinate everyone.
  1. Even if we're were to.vaccimate enough people to get herd immunity in the UK, if other countries don't do that , mutations may occur .abroad and without travel restrictions the mutations will come here and we are back.to square one

Travel restrictions are likely to be here.for a while I think even if we can drop.most of our internal restrictions before that

I have no time for him at all 🤷‍♀️

Richard "Why would a conservative government want to remove civil liberties and freedoms?"

It is an interesting question, but the fact is, that's what they are doing.

I don't think any government is going to be unwilling to do this though, regardless of what party is in power or what ideology is discussed.

He's made a couple of very important points in Parliament too, in case you're interested to look them up. I must go to bed but can dig them out tomorrow if you want. Wish he was my MP.

BIWI · 10/02/2021 23:08

@bumbleymummy

UK investigators have calculated that there is a realistic possibility that being infected with the variant that was first identified in the UK is associated with an increased risk of death compared to earlier version of COVID-19 that was circulating. Early evidence suggests the new variant could be about 30% more deadly but more data are being collected and the position will become clearer over the coming weeks

From the Public Health England blog

crazykid · 10/02/2021 23:17

@LunaHeather thanks so much for sharing. I just can't believe this is happening. I was invited for my vaccine yesterday. I can't even bring myself to book - nothing makes sense to me anymore. This is just going to go on and on and on. I can't stand it anymore. Why did the transport secretary say that today ? He literally ruined everything. What's the point in any vaccine if we are still stuck at home ? I can't take it. I'm going to lose my mind. There is no light. They want to give us only darkness.

Please stop thinking there is some big, bad human 'they' controlling all this as opposed to a virus doing what viruses do, and take the amazing opportunity to get your vaccine.

mumwon · 10/02/2021 23:35

all the expert virologists on mn & face& twitter
AZ is 10% less affective against getting a MILD version of covid rather than not getting it- it still protects against it becoming a serious illness (Prof Vallance says)
ages ago the BBC trio presentation stated that there would be mutations because that's what viruses do -this one doesn't have a double helix DNA like us (& even we get occasional mutation like Queen Victoria's children have haemophilia - mind they were cousins) this virus has RNA
If you travel & mix with others the more people who catch covid the more likely it is to mutate

tatutata · 10/02/2021 23:37

Now we've decided there are no limits to the cost of saving lives, there was never going to be a way back. I wish I had died in 2019.

bumbleymummy · 10/02/2021 23:37

the more the virus spreads the more opportunities for more mutations and one of those might evade the vaccine completely and/.or become more virulent.

Or it could become less virulent which would be a good thing.

@biwi yes, I read that at the time. The scientists themselves said there wasn’t enough data to confirm that. 1% vs 1.3% in men over 60 was the example given iirc.

LunaHeather · 10/02/2021 23:40

Oh crazy I would give you a big hug if I could

As you see, I haven't gone to bed!

In case it helps you feel less alone, couple of his points in the Commons. His point about talking over the heads of the elderly really resonated.

What's the point in any vaccine if we are still stuck at home ? I can't take it. I'm going to lose my mind. There is no light. They want to give us only darkness.

You're not thinking rationally.

The point of the vaccine is to get you out of your home. The problem is, it's taking longer than everyone would like. That's only going to get worse if people don't book promptly and go quickly. While you're dithering, people are waiting and wondering when their turn will come up.

A point of the vaccine is to stop you becoming very ill. Worth having, if only to free up that space for someone else who needs an op. It will probably also make you less infectious if you do get Covid, protecting others around you to some extent.

The vaccine will also, if all goes well and we get it quickly enough to avoid further mutations that may reduce efficacy (likely as adaptation pressures increase), we will get the upper hand and we will get even more effective vaccines out ahead of further mutations. The lockdown and social distancing measures are slowing everything down that is leading to this horrendous death toll - transmission, mutation, hospitalisations - so we can overtake and basically evolve everything we're doing faster than the virus - treatments, vaccines, you name it. That will get you out of your home and back to normality faster than a great British something or other followed by a surge followed by a lockdown. That's so 2020. Let's stop doing that. It really doesn't help us.

They want to give you a vaccine. Not darkness. Come on...

Maze76 · 10/02/2021 23:58

Oh my gosh, the vaccines are here and they will pave the way for the easing of restrictions. It’s not going to happen overnight but IT WILL HAPPEN! Calm down , take a breath and take each day as it comes.

Crazy kid and LunaHeather. Thank you for posting. I feel less alone because of your posts. Charles Walker seems to be making sense in all this madness.
